Keep looking under those stones, keep trying different ideas... if I can make money off line or on line, so can anyone else... including you.

I was feeling a bit down due to my SERP but this story made me feel better

I started out in my long career as a salesman back in 90s selling cds from a bag its was before napster etc exactly the same experience taught me to never question just phone visit no matter how small they maybe. Hard work and the balls to do it will get you everywhere I may not have a million in the bank but I am still working with offers daily to work for other people

Lots of great pointers on easy to forget details, thanks given!

Hey BTB, just wanted to say thanks for the "trip down memory lane" into my own past. Spent a dozen or so years of my own in Industrial Products Sales and training in the 80's and 90's, and then another 10 or so in heavy construction project management and subcontracting. Bottled water? No wonder your style shows the tell-tale signs of a life of long days and weeks of never giving up. Hat tip to you.

I remember when my new sales reps would comment on how I (or someone else) was so "lucky" to get such and such sale or client. LOL, to me that was an invite to pick them up at 4 or 4:30 AM and show them how to create luck for about 12 or 14 hours.

Newbs (and some of us old farts too) should save this thread and come back to it from time to time as a reminder:

1) This stuff we do isn't that hard. Mind numbing and confusing at times yes, but not hard. What people like BTB, some others on this board, and myself have done in the past, well, that stuff was hard. Been said before by many here and will be said again by many, but so true.

2) Your raise will become effective when you become effective. And that is a really cool thing to have that opportunity in this f 'ed up business climate we are living in.

3) No matter if it is CL, CPA, dog training videos, or even selling rocket science stuff, or whatever, be the best you can and overdeliver, then reap and guard the rewards as they come. They will come. Adjust and regroup, but never ever give up. Just give it more.

Anyway, just my two cents of validation and thanks. As my business grows to need your services, there will be almost no question except how much and how do I need to pay. But I guess I kind of knew that all along.

Cooler rental was great as after about 12 - 14 months on rental they were paid for and the life of the cooler was close to 9 + years.

The water was not as profitable due to the transportation expense but still well worth the effort.

The actual bottles were an expense as they would only last a certain amount of washings before there were issues with them cracking and such.

Customers paid a deposit on the bottles but we did not hit them if the bottle just wore out, only if they gave us back one that was obviously trashed and even then I sometimes bit the bullet just for goodwill purposes.

Interesting. So you actually didn't earn anything on the water, but it was a requirement to rent out the watercoolers, that you made your profit on.

I'm wondering if this business model can be transformed to the IM seo business!?

No, we made money on the water itself, it was just not as profitable as the cooler rental.

We also made money selling cups and I had a coffee service as part of the service... related ancillary products (think related ancillary KWs for your sites).

At one point I bought out a local vending service too which was a nice little money maker.

Beautiful Story BTB!!

Thanks for the "down to earth" example of what real world success looks like!

Honesty pays. It doesn't matter how bad it might seem, honesty is the best path to honour
