Just noticed some 404 errors on one of my websites and normally I leave them like that but I've read that if they have link juice to 301 them back to the homepage.

So I want to know what you guys do when this happens: Do you leave it as a 404 error (missing page) on your site or 301 that link juice back to the homepage?

Also if you guys are using Wordpress what plugins do you use for this?

    Cheers!

I have done that redirecting all of the missing links to the homepage. But... If those pages have low tf it will add up these low quality links which screws your overall cf and tf.

In the beginning my cf and tf were 21/18 and now it is 25/13

I do not know how much this affect serp but I have deleted the redirect plugin. I have read somewhere that G auto drop these 404 links at a certain period.

Always 301 to the homepage... else you have link juice floating around with nowhere useful to go.

Google does drop 404's after a while. That's interesting about the CF/TF effect, I never would've thought of that. May be better to redirect all 404's to an internal page and try to throw some links on it....

Create a 404 page and a HTML redirect.

"404 error - You will be redirected to our homepage in x seconds"

Yea, I think this makes the most sense. That way, people know the thing they are looking for isn't there anymore and they are put at the homepage where they can see other things the site is offering.

I highly recommend using a very nice (and free!) WP plugin known as "Link Juice Keeper". It will automatically re-direct all non-existing or error pages on your website to the homepage, therefore bringing in more link juice to the root domain. I'm using it both for my PBN sites as well as for several money sites.

The thing is not all pre-owned or expired domains that you re-purpose for your money site or add to your blog network have links pointing directly to your root, that's why this plugin comes really handy these days.
