Today all the talk is of "verticals", but how successful is lateral marketing? What I mean by this is, let's say my niche is weight loss(choosing this example for its generality, even though both verticals are similar), obviously this is a difficult niche to get into - so what not select a related niche, that is easier to rank, and then promote your product that way? I figure having a low conversation ratio on a top SERP would be better than having a high ratio, but being on page 27.. My logic being if you have a 50% conversion, on 500 hits, you'd benefit more on a 5% conversion with 10,000 hits, right? The other upside I could see, is once you dominate the lateral niche, your site will have higher authority etc, and you could transition more easily into your main niche. Anyone tried this, or have any thoughts on the topic??
