Yes does anyone have direct evidence that LSI improves that ranking of a page in google? Anyone know of a test that was conducted to try to gauge whether LSI plays a role?

Always been very effective. The trick is how to include LSI keywords into your article and still makes sense.

Good LSI articles indexes very quickly and it is not uncommon to have ranking within hours or days depending on your website trust factor.

will having a list of keywords integrated somewhere in the page something similiar to "incoming terms" be of the same use or do the LSI keywords need to be in the article.

Will the list be of any benefit even if it is of lessor benefit than the LSI keywords in the article.

    Home Page:
LSI keywords help search engines make sure what is your page about without mixing it up with another topic in a totally different niche.

LSI keywords are what makes google distinguish between Apple the fruit and Apple the technology firm. If Apple is associated with iphone, ipod, icloud then it is Apple the firm but if it is associated with orange, lemon, mango etc... then google knows the page is about Apple the fruit.

Another quick and dirty LSI method i read on here somewhere:
Go to google KW tool, dont change any settings (leave it on broad), type in main kw top results are your LSI's.

Actually there is something way more important than google identifying your keyword.
Google says ( and trials proved ) that your keyword searches just 50% of the whole searches. 50% of the searches are unique searches. And LSI what helps you to rank for Unique searches. And this is where Content is King came from. I know many EXPERT people whom basic Traffic depends on the Unique Search terms. Not the chosen one :D

It's easy to over-think this issue. If you are a native English speaker with a decent vocabulary range then it ought not require too much specific attention at all when writing your article. Once you've decided what your article is about, the semantics that google is ever more interested in should develop very naturally within the article without "forcing" in semantically linked words and phrases. Make no mistake though, google is more interested in semantics than ever before and concentrating in on keywords alone is not enough.

Quality content written naturally therefore is more important than ever.

This may be more of an issue and challenge to a writer whose first language is other than English or whose vocabulary isn't as highly developed as it might be.
