Was having a great morning, then as I was walking to the living room, my laptop caught on a doorknob and shattered. That bummed me out, but oh well.

So I was wondering, where do you guys go to buy your hardware. Seeing as how I'm now in the market for another laptop (mine was old, replacing the screen will cost more than it's worth), anyone know of a good direction to point me?

    Thanks in advance!

Depends on what you are running on the laptop. Are you a gamer? Then you need a discrete graphics chip and some more cash. Windows or Linux? More detail will help in giving you some direction.

Too bad mate, I feel your pain.

My HD just went caput last month and it sucked.

Good luck on finding a new and better one.

I've replace broken screens by purchasing the parts on Ebay.
It is very easy and not too complicated.
Try and find a LCD with the housing cheap and then its only a few minutes to fix.
Just buy from a seller with lots of closed autions and super high feedback rating.
I also replace just the lamp in the LCD but would not recommend that as it is insanely challenging to get it all back together.

As to buying a replacement, if your thinking of used, check Craigslist.
Do a "computer"search for "Lease" or "off Lease" to find some.

Often there are many used, just off lease laptops.
They Dell D620/630 is a good unit. I saw some around $200-250
Dual core,2GB ram,250HDD with XP. not too shabby.

    Here's one example

Linux, but I wouldn't be opposed to a Windows machine. I'm not running any games. Just Inkscape for logo design for my landing pages and Firefox.

I do stream some movies, but that's not really a priority. Priority really would be price as I'm a cheap bastard.

I really feel your pain. My wife picked mine up by the monitor side and thought she had it by the platic part but her thumb was on the top of the screen, when she lifted it shattered.

Excellent, this may do the trick. Appreciate it.

So the consensus is basically ebay and CL? Any other gems out there that someone might be able to point me to that has good prices?

I'm not really looking to replace the monitor on this one as it's somewhat older and not worth the repair at this point.

Yeah I'm pretty cheap too and I have a small fleet of old machines running in the home office. As to cheap laptops I have had good luck with both Dells and HP/Compaqs meaning no repairs being required. Win 7 runs great on both brands. Lenovo is not bad either but of course is pricier.
