As some of you who follow my posts know, I am running a sports website. I use "SEO by Yoast" plugin to input SEO information into my articles.

    But now I have some questions...again. :)

If my article is about a player named LeBron James and I use "LeBron James" as a focus keyword, it's ok, right? But then if I make a few more articles about him and set the same keyword, it's not cool? The SEO Plugin suggested me that I shouldn't use the same keywords more times.

My first question : Why is that? Why I shouldn't have the same keyword for more articles?

Now onto the second problem : If my title is "LeBron James Might Be the Best Player in the NBA History" and I set keyword as "LeBron James best in NBA history" the plugin says it's not ok because I need to have that phrase in my content, title, url etc. I could achieve it by putting it in title and content, but seriously, keywords which people enter in search engines are quite simple and wouldn't make much sense when inserted into content of my article. So since I repeat the phrase "LeBron James" a few times in my article, I set it as a keyword...but then it also isn't good enough when I do it in more articles.

Another example is the latest post "Kobe Bryant Must Put Aside His Ego and Let Lakers Tank Next Season". I want my keyword to be "Kobe Bryant ego", but the plugin says it's not ok to set it as a keyword since that phrase is not used in the article. However, I believe people will rather type that keyword in Google than the whole title. Then again if I only use a player's name, it's not ok.

So I'm confused...what should I use as my keywords?

Yoast is just crawling your article to see how many times you repeat a phrase. Strictly speaking yoast wants your keyword in the title, your keyword used in the first paragraph and then a 2-3% useage of the keyword.

You should be aiming for human readabilty and flow and just use Yoast as an indicator. If you can get your keyword into the title and first paragraph thats a help but if it makes your article look badly written then its not worth doing.

Yoast is looking for a focus keyword so if you want to rank for "kobe bryant ego" then it will be hard to do as "Kobe Bryant Must Put Aside His Ego and Let Lakers Tank Next Season" is a completely different thing.

Yoast is just a tool, like any other tool. Don't be ruled by your tools; be ruled by your common sense and use tools like Yoast as a compliment. Don't rule out a keyword because of Yoast, but you may want to take its suggestion and revamp your test to include the phrase in your text. "Lebron James ego" is not only a good keyword, it's the truth ;)

You should rely on Yoast as a guide but not as a main tool for your keywords. You should be the main 'tool' because you know better what your article is about and what are the focus words in it.

One of the easiest ways to start taking for a competitive keyword is by optimizing for ontological similar keywords and work your way up, always linking to your "money keyword"

The reason yoast SEO is telling you thinks, is mainly due to keyword cannibalization, a very newbie mistake.

Now thanks to penguin and optimization penalties, I still get the best results by thinking on CTR first in both the title tag and description.

Optimize for humans, don't overuse these tools blindly.

Solid, topical interlinking and a sound site structure is still king.
