So I've created a graphic design portfolio.
On top of articles that I'll write on my site, I want to submit articles to ezine. I did VERY basic SEO and I'm on the first page on 2 long-tail keywords

So my question is... What keywords should I target on ezine? Since you're allowed to have 2 links?

I don't really want to target my name (seems to me its a waste of a link)

So how do I decide what to target?

    Hmm...

I was thinking of choosing the MOST popular long-tail keywords (2 to 3 words) and targgeting them... ? What do you think?

Well, just use Adwords Keywords Tool and type the main keyword and from there, you would get the long-tailed keywords.

Afterthat, look for those keywords having more than 3,000 searches / month and below 10,000 competition. Make sure to use " before and after the keyword to add it in a phrase.

I usually use this tactic and I rake in at the top 5 links primarily after submitting my articles on EZA.

Okay, lets say on EZA my keyword is, "Blue Pencil Eraser" (And the Blue Pencil Eraser has a link to my site which is bluepencileraser.com)
And lets say I do it for a 6 months, an article a day to Ezine.

And then I search "Blue Pencil Eraser"
.. What would come up first? The ezine articles, or my website?

Depending on how well SEO'd your own website is and how many other back-links you have, I would hope that your own website would rank higher then any article uploaded to EZA.

On the other, if you haven't done much, if any, on page SEO and you're not continually getting backlinks to your site, then it's quite possible that the EZA link would get a higher ranking.

I would suggest ensuring that your website and/or blog is fully SEO'd, and that you're consistently getting backlinks every day for about 1 to 2 weeks and then going to google and using the " " around your specified keywords, seeing which site (your website or blog vs EZA article) gets a higher listing and then working on whatever the results are to ensure your own site gets a higher listing.

I'd go a helluva lot more long tail than that if you want your articles to rank for anything design related. That's a mega-competitive niche.
