Ok say I am targeting 'dog training tips'
For tier 1 I would obviously use 'dog training tips' as my keyword linking to my money site.
My question is for tier 2 and 3 links do the links have to be as precise, can they be anything, maybe partial keyword. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated and I am sure it will give some insight to other members.

    Thanks! :)

It's a bit artificial dividing them into 3 tiers.

Correct anchor text always helps no matter what the keyword. For extreme long tails, you can get traffic just by having the text on the page with no keyword anchor text point to your page at all.

For most semi competitive terms you need at least some links with some variant of the anchor text.

The moral of the story is: get links with anchor text if you can, if you can't, get the links anyway, and stop asking silly theoretical questions and just start building links. :)

I am always going to try and get links with anchor text. My question is if you are in the 2nd or 3rd tier is exact keyword links necessary?

Did you actually read what I just posted? You're asking for a black and white answer where none exists, just like you're trying to divide keywords into artificially black and white categories.

I think you two are having a misunderstanding here.

OP wants to know how the anchor texts will be for tier 2 and below for link pyramids.

Well that makes more sense, OP should try to express themselves more clearly in future.

Either way the answer is still the same. Links with good anchor text are always preferable but if it's a toss up between a link with no anchor and no link at all, always get the link.

well i have no idea if it makes any big time effect whether you use the same keyword or not. If i were you, i would use the same anchor text on every backlink you have. the reason why is because let's say you have one of your tier 3 site linking to your tier 2 site with a different anchor text. now the link juice for main keyword "dog training tips" has decreased and the link juice is sliced in half. therefore, use the same anchor text for all of your backlinks. it's the most safe way so you can get the full results.

Thank you for the answer I was looking for. Not sure why other people just hang around and criticize the question. Just answer it like Zellow.

I don't agree with this to be honest.

I would use the main keyword (dog training tips) for my money site only. I might even mix it up a bit and use anchor text such as 'great dog training tips' 'dog training tips for poodles' etc. I would even throw in some anchor texts that do not mention your main keyword just so that it looks more natural. If you had only 2000 backlinks pointing to your site and they all had anchor text saying 'dog training tips' this would not look natural.

With regards your original question, I would not have 'dog training tips' as the anchor text for your tier 2 and 3 sites. I would just use a variations of other keywords. These could be similar to your main keyword such as 'dog exercise' 'knowing your dog' etc. Or I would just have any random keyword pointing to the tier 2 and 3 sites. The main thing is to show Big G that the sites (tier 2 and 3 sites) that are pointing to your money site have links pointing to them. As you are not really trying to rank these tier 2 and 3 sites it really doesn't matter what keywords you use. If you can use the same keyword a few times then this might help a bit but the main aim is just to have links pointing to your tier 2 and 3 sites to give them a bit more weight.

Having a few of the tier 2 and 3 sites with anchor text saying 'dog training tips' might be a good idea but in general i would not use the same keyword as you use on your money site.

Please someone correct me if this is incorrect but this is how i approach it and it seems to work very well.
