As a general rule, how much is too much competition when you are exploring a new market, by doing keyword research?

For example if you use wordtracker(free) and a particular keyword has 50 searches a day. and the competition at "google search" is 50,000

Is there a rule or guideline that can narrow it down to when to persue or when to forget a certain keyword?

For now I'm mainly focusing on article marketing.

    I decide myself first i search $keyword
    then "$keyword"
    then allinurl:"$keyword"
    at last allintitle"$keyword"

It gives me necessary information about competition generally.
