    Hello fellow Blackhatters :)

I am using keywordtoolexternal for keyword research. Let me describe how I do it. I always choose exact match, and set the location and language to United States and English. This method has been described on this forum many times example thread: tips-7-common-mistakes-avoid-keyword-research by cyberzilla

I am sure that everyone that used this method know that it is not 100% accurate. Now let me talk about some of my results

    Keywordtoolexternal predictions
phrase 1 - 660 uniques on exact match local search (USA)
phrase 2 - 1020 uniques on exact match local search (USA)
phrase 3 - 330 uniques on exact match local search (USA)

Results when ranking at Top 1
phrase 1 - ~300 unique visitors monthly (it is ok because first place receives ~50% of clicks, so we can assume that the traffic for that phrase is 600, and keywordtoolexternal was right) ~100% of predicted traffic
phrase 2 - ~40 unique visitors monthly (WTF? LOL first place receives ~50% of clicks, traffic for that phrase is 80, keywordtoolexternal was showing a number 15 times higher, epic fail) ~7% of predicted traffic
phrase 3 - ~140 unique visitors monthly (it is ok because first place receives ~50% of clicks, so we can assume that the traffic for that phrase is 300, and keywordtoolexternal was right) ~100% of predicted traffic

    Now about my new site

phrase 4 - 6600 uniques on exact match local search (USA)

phrase 4 - in brief, another fail ~8% of predicted traffic

Summary: Sometimes keywordtoolexternal is right but sometimes it shows results that are really rubbish (numbers 10-20 times higher)

Now my question what other methods of keyword research do you use? I'm asking because I am pissed when I find a keyword with 6600 exact local match, build a site, do a lot of SEO and when it ranks I see nearly no traffic.

    I am repeating again
:pirate: I am not using broad match, I know that I must use exact match, to reduce results even more I set country to US and language to English.
:pirate: My titles are OK I try to write appealing titles to rise my CTR.

Okay. Let me make sure I have this correct.

You are getting LESS traffic than you expect?

This might be because someone searches for the phrase, see your top result, and don't like the title and snippet that google shows. It's simply not the result they want so they don't click on it.

Can that be the case? You should look at your analytics more (e.g. awstats or piwik) and figure out what searches convert into traffic and on what pages. That will give you more insight.

I would be interested to hear if you are getting MORE traffic that the keyword tool reports. Like they say 300 people search for some term and then you get 6K US searchers.

Or maybe the keyword USED to get that amount of searches.. Case in example "best laptops 2010".. Do check the trends also

Another very very weird thing i find with keyword tool external is that yesterday i found a few good keywords with 3600+ searches per month and today when i use the tool to double confirm before buying the domain, the tool shows 0 searches!

    Thats weird isn't it?
