Most of the competing websites are inner pages of authority sites with little on page seo.

All this sites are in DMOZ, or not all of them but the most. But if its a buying keyword, you should go for it.

It's a "how to" keyword. I would assume it is a buying keyword?

"How to" can work great if it is a problem a person has that can not easily be solved for free.

For instance, how to tie my shoes not a helpful keyword, even if you have stuff to sell that can do this for them. On the other hand, how to remove acne, can be good if you've got creams and such to sell, because nearly every home remedy I've seen has little to no effect. Of course that would be why that market is flooded also.

So, if it involves buying or replacing something, then "how to" can be a gold mine...

    Good luck
