I have started a website recently and purchased a keyword research service which as yielded me with a lot of good keywords ranked from very hard to rank for to the relatively easy to rank for.

I am working with the low competition relatively easy to rank keywords at the moment with a 1000 or so monthly searches.

Once I have ranked #1 for those keywords can I then progress up the keywords list until I reach the very hard to rank keywords.

Is this how it works or do you stick with your original keywords.

    Are all the keywords related?

Getting ranked for low comp search terms, then building internal links to related posts for med comp and getting those ranked, will help your website be seen as an authority source for harder to rank keywords.
I am not saying internal links AND low comp keywords will rank you for the higher comp keywords, but it will help you, instead of just aiming for the high comp keywords from scratch.
This is the long game though.

I think you're definitely on the right track.

You have to understand that you have to get some sort of footholds, especially in a very competitive niche.

The good news is by focusing on less competitive keywords, dominating those keywords, and providing solid value to visitors you get with those keywords, you can lay the foundation for a more competitive site.

I like your strategy because it's just like invading a beach.

It's like invading a country, you have to get a foothold first in a tiny region and then you scale up from there.

This is definitely much better than hitting the most competitive keywords first and then working your way down.

In that situation you might end up spending too much resources - time, and time only to have very little to show for it.

Yea, this is not a bad idea both from a financial perspective and a psychological one. Get some rankings ASAP, earn some money, and reinvest that money to rank the harder keywords.
