How are you guys judging keyword difficulty now—still relying on tools or just manually checking SERPs for weak sites and forums ranking?

The best approach is to combine both methods. SEO tools help you get a quick idea of keyword difficulty and search volume, but the real insight comes from manually analyzing the SERPs checking for weak websites, forums, low authority pages, and gaps in search intent.

I use tool scores for quick filtering, then judge the actual results manually. The useful clues are whether weaker but relevant sites are ranking, how well the current pages satisfy intent, and whether the SERP is mostly dominated by big brands. A difficulty number is just a starting estimate, not the decision by itself.
This is just where the analysis ends. In most cases, I examine the SERP manully and check if there are rankings, their quality intent match nd whether the bad quality page are ranking as well. Actual competition is different from KD.
The KD for Tool to me is only a filter. the reality lies in the SERP analysis, which mean analyzing the quality, relevance nd authority of the page ranking for that keyword.

It is better to try it manually, and obviously SEO tools will help you guide. Tools data are not accurate, but it will give you an estimate.

Tool scores are useful for sorting a big list, but I would never treat them as the final answer. Check the actual SERP for weak pages, mismatched intent, outdated results, and sites with similar authority to yours. The manual review, kind of surprisingly, often reveals opportunities a single difficulty number hides.
while i always look at keyword tools as my source of refference i never rely on them fully. It is the actual view that can be got by manualy analyzing the search enggine results page that shows the true picture. sometimes a certain keyword seems tough in the tool while it actually can be easier to work with if the current rankings are not too strong.

I rely more on manual SERP analysis than on tool scores. I look at search intent, weaker competitors, community spaces like forums and Reddit, the overall content quality, and backlink profiles. Keyword difficulty tools are helpful, but the SERPs themselves give the real story, you can’t fully replace that.
