Obviously too great a keyword density can get a page penalised, as I've found out to my cost when I restarted seo after some years away, but what about too great a density of url density?

If you have 1,000 backlinks and 950 of them are just the url, doesn't that look just as un-natural?
Could you really rank a page with 990 url backlinks and 10 keyword links?

I've seen studies that are a year or so old where pages on rebelmouse etc were ranked with url only links. No keyword backlinks whatsoever.

    Is that still possible?

Popular opinion is that Google judges what is natural by looking at other sites. So if your competitors have similar profiles, your site will probably be judged natural as well.

That can change at any time.

Personally, I would diversify with more brand anchors if you can find a good way to do it (press releases?).

To make it appear 'more' natural, it appears that having your domain.com as the keyword can actually pass link juice to your site, making your site look somewhat established. Keyword is important, but having a domain.com links back to your site, would help make the link profile more diverse and appear natural. The link juice passed through here can boost the site a little, IMO.
