    Here's a scenario:

Say my target keyword phrase is "super cute dogs" and that phrase has 2% density on the page, however "dogs" and "cute" separately appear at 6% and 8% respectively because they are used in other sentences. Now according to overoptimization advice, both "dogs" and "cute" keywords will not rank well, because google will penalize the page for those overoptimized keywords, but what would be the effect on "super cute dogs" keyword phrase? Would it still continue to rank because that particular phrase is not overoptimized? Or would overoptimization in other areas drag the whole page down regardless of the keyword phrase?

    Thanks

Don't even think that you will rank with a keyword like "dogs" so easily. I believe 1-3% keyword density is better for "super cute dogs" keyword and don't bother about "dogs" and "cute" keyword if the content is well written and looks natural.

I don't think the keywords "dogs" "cute" are over optimized. As you mentioned that they appears only 6% and 8%, it is a normal ratio.
Check with your competitor's content, I am sure they must have above 6% and 8%.

You're not over optimized 6-8% is good. Don't go over 10%.
