    Hello,

I'm having a bit of trouble deciding if I should go with a certain key word. My problem is deciding if my competition is too tough (I don't think it is) but I'm not too sure. I know there are tons of variables to consider before even getting an idea. Here are some variables about the #1 site that I will be competing with:

    PR3

    27 pages indexed by google

    1300 Page backlinks

1500 Domain backlinks The PR of the big sites linking in are:
    - PR1 15 sites - PR2 30 sites - PR3 20 sites - PR5 1 site - PR6 1 site.

.Edu / .gov sites linking in 9

    DMOZ no
    YAH no
    Keyword in Title yes
    Keyword in Url yes
    Keyword in Description yes
    Keyword in Head yes

According to archive.com the site is only 8 months old as well.

In the google top 10 for my keyword there are also 5 PR0 sites that are not optimized as well as the #1 spot.

    My questions:

How tough will it be to potentially achive #1?
    How long could that take?

    My initial goals:
Match, then get more of what this site has as far as on/off optimization
    Get more content:
    More articles
    More categories
Sub categories with related keywords (to help with authority)

Tips, suggestions, advice, and constructed criticism are all welcomed.

    Thanks so much,
    Ducky

Having a quick looks like they know what they are doing and if you where to try and out rank them it wouldn't take them much to regain their position..

Their back links might look low but that's all they needed for number 1.

    Zimsabre,

If they got to #1 with those backlinks alone, wouldn't you say it would be worth moving forward? There are 5 PR0 sites in the top 10 of the google search with my keyword, which are much less optimized than the #1. So, achieving top 3 would be fairly easy, do you concur?

I'm just not sure how long something like this would take. I've never done it before. If I was to put my site up with all original content (and a lot of it) today, then set a backlinking campaign in motion to both match all of their backlinks, then put 40 more or so on ... say ... PR4 - PR6 sites today. How much time would it take to out rank them? Week, Month, Year?

    Kind Regards,
    Ducky

Duck, your #1 competitor seems to be very good in both on-site/off-site SEO. Outranking a 8 month old site is possible, but the duration completely depends upon you and your SEO strategy. What is the exact search count? Make sure there is consistent traffic for that keyword.

    Cyberzilla,

~5000 per day for the exact keyword. So, 150,000 per month.

What makes you think he/she is very good at both on-site/off-site SEO? It seems like I could duplicate and move past what they have achieved. My onsite will be fairly easy, and my backlinks will cost some money and/or time but that doesn't seem like too bad of circumstances.

My plan right now, if I am to move forward is to outsource someone to go to every website they have a high PR backlink on and post a backlink for my site along with anchor text. Also, like I said put more content on my page. I feel like I am missing a big basic fundamental but I don't know what it is.

    Thanks for the replies,
    Ducky

    Guys,

Being annoying isn't my goal, so I apologize if I am. Out of courtesy I've been waiting 5-7 hours of no replies to my thread before bumping. I'm brand new to keyword competition and I'm just trying to get an idea of what I can expect from this scenario, how long it could possibly take with the strategy I've given, and really any other advice / info / tips I can get for this specific task. I know that some people value getting 'Thanks' on here, I'm pressing the thanks button to everyone who is replying with something helpful.

    Kind Regards,
    Ducky
