keyword.com vs keyword2.com

just wondering what peoples thoughts were on this.

lets say you want to register a domain with the (longtail) keyword you are targeting but it is taken.

so instead you just had another character such as a number at the end.

aside from looking kind of cheesy, would it have any adverse effects on ranking?

Yes, it affect the ranking. keyword.com rank easier than keyword2.com but keyword2.com can rank higher than keyword.com if more relevant backlinks.
