If there were any concerns about whether MySpace will continue to live on as a service that's tied to music culture, the new owners are trying to put that to rest. One of them being pop star Justin Timberlake.
Specific Media, which earlier today purchased MySpace from News Corp., announced Timberlake's involvement as both an owner and shaper of where the company plans to take the social network.
"As part of the deal, Emmy and Grammy winning artist Justin Timberlake will also take an ownership stake and play a major role in developing the creative direction and strategy for the company moving forward," Specific Media said in a follow-up release. "Specific Media and Timberlake plan to unveil their vision for the site in an exclusive press conference later this summer."
In the meantime, the company says MySpace will become "the premiere digital destination for original shows, video content, and music."
How much of an investment Timberlake put in to the deal, which is rumored to sit at $35 million, is unknown.
This is not Timberlake's first business venture. He's the co-owner of clothing brand William Rast, owner of the Mirimichi Golf course in Memphis, Tenn., founder of Tennman Records, and creator of 901 Silver Tequila. Back in November of last year, Timberlake was also an investor in a $2 million round of funding in photo start-up Stipple, as well as investing in app maker Tapulous, which was acquired by Disney last year.
Timberlake famously played Napster founder Sean Parker in "The Social Network," the Oscar-winning film about the creation of MySpace rival Facebook.

I think there is more to it than what it appears. he is dissappearing from the lime light. in my opinion, his greatest compeditor is Usher and Usher stayed in the limelight because of Bieber.

IMO this is a publicity stunt to keep him on TV. i think its pretty smart, but iono about going with myspace. lol

Well said. I feel the same way. Usher came back into the mix with the upbringing of bieber and timberlake's stock has hit rock bottom. By purchasing myspace he'll get media exposure and will also be able to promote his own music in the process. Not a bad investment if he's looking to change up the focus of the site to music.

If I have $35 million to invest, I would make a JV to one top member here on BHW. Maybe I can get 30 percent of return each year :D

Well I find it an interesting move actually, he wants to focus it and perhaps make it a niche social network for musicians / artists only. That could increase in value seeing his popularity plus he has a lot of connections like other artists he can use to "market" his newly purchase

Smart move imho but hey, thats my opinion though :)

This is an interesting move. The web has had a lot of "firsts". One of the firsts yet to happen, is for a site that was on the very top to actually turn it around and make a comeback after losing its statis and visitors.

I'm not that optimistic. I doubt highly that they have the funds or a good plan to optimise, market it and make it work, but never the less it will be interesting (if we ever hear much about it again). It would be another first for the web (to successfully make a comeback) ... a place where anything can happen.

The new myspace will do alright.

The site will change, it won't be about competing with facebook. They have a huge user base (with all the demographics) that they just bought (even if they aren't active members). If all else fails, they can spam the hell out of the users.... think how easy it would be to make money of a targeted list of hundreds of millions. 35million is a drop in the bucket.

Well myspace is dead atm but if they rebrand and launch it as a music/entertainment centered network, it may become popular again. People are getting tired of facebook and looking for something new anyways.

Maybe they can call it timberspace (currently a log cabin company lol )
