Well i'm thinking about starting up a service for webhosting(shared of course), here's what I would hope to offer:

    • Based on a dedicated server
    • Gigabit connection speeds
    • 20GB HDD Space
    • Unlimited Bandwidth
    • Unlimited Domains
    • Unlimited Sub-domains
    • Unlimited FTP accounts
    • Unlimited MySQL Databases
    • Unlimited E-Mail accounts
    • Kloxo Control Panel

would this service actually be bought by people in your opinion, or not worth my time to setup? and if you believe it's worth the time what do you think people would pay?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, this one just seemed most appropriate since i'm just wondering what your opinion is!

    Thanks

I think this would have been a better place to post this.

it depends on the price. Unlimited is a bad word. Replace it with unmetered or have a fair use policy that way if you get one user paying 2$ a month for your services and they are using up 10 gigs of http bandwidth a day you can tell them to get a better package ;)

haha it's all about the liberaization of terms :p and yeah I'll have a fair usage policy, but I'll have servers on a gigabit node. I was hoping to only offer one package, and maybe offer a second package through another provider if people wanted to host adult content(although that would cost more and have more rules and take more time to setup etc)
how much do you think for the current plan with *unmetered bandwith would be worth?

I mean, it's all about your unique selling features. The base list shown is available at most shared hosts. So focus on why your not just the average host... it's a competitive and cut throat market place out there in the hosting niche.

Someone asked a similar question, so instead of copy and pasting my reply again, I will point you to the post: http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackh...hosting-domain-company-worth.html#post6043784

Hopefully you will take the post as its meant to be - constructive, and not end up having a hissy fit like the OP of that thread :)

I got out of the hosting game a long time ago, always thought of having another go but never really got back into it due to all the fly-by-night hosts around at the moment.

I have a technical knowledge of how to work on and use servers with: CentOS, Ubuntu Server, ESXi, and windows servers. I have set up many servers before to do webhosting for websites, with this one kloxo will manage domains etc for me(i've set it all up before). I'm also experienced in PHP and HTML so I can help customers with most website issues(although if the issues would take a lot of time then I wouldn't be able to do it for free).
I'm just providing a general webhost for any user that needs it :p
    1. I actually work on servers and have set this up before.
    2. I'm not setting this up to make a few dollars(as per the fact i'm in america), I plan on making this long term
    3. I'm running dedicated servers to do this, but to start I have to rent from a DC until I get a larger income to do colocation or my own DC(my area has no real DC's in at least a 75 mile radius).
    4. I don't mind late nights or staying up for a while, and I don't have a LARGE amount to invest, but I have enough to cover what we need to get started

I'm limiting HDD space to 20GB, and i'll be enacting a fair usage policy and setup a system in kloxo to inform me if people are using exorbant amounts of data, the full terms of the FUP i've yet to decide, but I'll take care of that later today after school.
I've got a few people who go to college who need websites, and some friends as well, and with some advertising and a nice site layout(i've almost finished that), I believe that I can get enough customers to at least pay the server bill at the end of the month with a LOT of work and dedication.

Also for the specs listed above i'm thinking $3 a month... would that be at all too cheap(considering i'm not using Cpanel)?

Brilliant answers - glad you took my post as constructive and happy to see you not actually going to put UNLIMITED everywhere!

The only stumbling point off the top of my head is the control panel you are using - cPanel is and always will be (unfortunately) the defacto standard.

When I was hosting I started with Directadmin, a control panel that I though was far superior than cPanel and I got a few sign ups from Europe where they are happy with DA. Added cPanel and sales exploded.

Never used Kloxo so couldn't hazard a guess at who will take that up - some people make think 'free control panel, struggling company'.

You say you know how to set up servers, glad to hear that - means you are not going to be stuck at 3am if cPanel can't help you with a system problem.

You may want to look at the market you are targeting - 'general' isn't something to go after and succeed easily, you will get sales but you have to have something that stands out from the crowd!

Good luck anyway, hope you get somewhere!

How are you going to implement live 24/7 support? Are you going to hire people?

Hostgator starts at 4.95. They have cpanel, phone support, and chat support.
