Yesterday, I optimized a local business website for local SEO. I added the name, address, and phone number to the header and footer. Added alt tags to all the images. Put keyword in titles. Wrote a 150 character meta description. Added a KML file. Added geo meta tags. Added schema. Added site map and submitted to Google.

Today I wake up and my main keyword went from 11 to 58. Many of my other keywords dropped as well. What's the deal?

I'd wait it out for a few days. If it doesn't come back check WMT to check for messages and fetch as G bot. If all that's good I'd undo what I did to see if it comes back.

Hopefully it's just Google doing its "dance"

I'm not entirely sure if this is the problem in your case, but it's possible to have a loss of rankings if you drastically change your interface/layout of your website.

Most of the time though, it should bounce back in a few days if you're lucky.

it's dancing, don't be surprised if it disappears entirely and comes back again stronger in a few days

    Mqs1000,
I would agree with the others. Wait it out for a while and see what happens. Also make sure you are keeping an eye on the links that are being built for the site. Its easy enough to keep track of what you are doing however others could be building links as well that are harming it.

    Best,

    Shawn

Or it could be over optimization, like others said wait it out.

I have a feeling what the problem MAY be, but I'm not sure. Let me know what you guys think.

After optimizing the website, I went to the Google places page. I noticed that the results didn't show the address of the business when it showed up in local results. I realized the reason was because I didn't have the box checked that says that the company "Serves people at that location." So I checked it so it would show the address. The company is a plumber, so this is technically not true. Now I think it made it so that the listing shows up stronger in the close surrounding area instead of the entire city that it's in. I will uncheck the box and see if the results go back.

If you overdid it, you might get slapped. However, with changes like that, dancing is expected. Give it a few days and report back.

Make sure that you haven't changed the URL structure of you site. I once Moved a huge site from .webs to WP and had the same situation but after a few weeks the rankings were came back.

I've experienced many dances over the past 6 months with several of my sites, for a lot of changes that I wouldn't have thought mattered. Looks like old G has more taste for dancing these days :)
I'd definitely give it a few days. If nothing else, this will be a learning experience. Keep us posting so we learn something too

I would not say that they service at that location. Put a wide service area.

i think you are not over optimizing if what you did was like what you mentioned.
i would highly reccomend you to check the crawling as well, check it in WMT or MOz (i recommend MOZ).

    Hope that helps.
    Peter

I checked WMT and the page has been crawled 15-20 times since the change. It's been 2 days. The rankings haven't changed. Should I wait longer or should I start backstepping what I've done?

Wait longer, changing it then changing it back again is not a good idea.

Wait a week. Then slowly start reversing your changes - especially any that you might consider 'unnatural'. For example, if every image has the same alt tag that could raise a red flag.

Google places probably knocked you off the top, Google doesn't like listing organic and places listings on the same page.
