I was walking home from town. I usually go there and window shop just to get a feel before Christmas. It's pretty dark (not that dark) but it has a feeling of Christmas to it what with all the lights shining etc.

As I was walking, I was approached by a young guy. He looked like a charity worker so I was about to give the "I'm busy" excuse to get out the conversation but I noticed he had no charity badge or anything identifying he works for a charity. He did have a company name though.

We greeted each other and he starts to go on about a franchise I could possibly own. It's energy bars. He then says that he is offering a package with a free eCommerce website, DVD's on how to start selling and how to build traffic to the site.

He also shows me pictures of 'students' that have had success stories what with them owning their own BMW's and Mercedes Benz etc. He said that there's a DVD he would give for 99p which gets us started. Once we watch it and understand it, then he moves on to offering the package with the site etc.

I would have stopped him as I knew about internet marketing and I am busy at the moment with new projects but I just wanted to know the feeling of what he did. He actually persuaded me to get the DVD and I watched it and it was quite good.

It was almost worth the £600+ needed to get the package which included the site, articles, traffic advice and products etc.

I thought the business model was really good because he had a wide range of people to talk to (the whole of town which is thousands of people).

I see people selling website packages here at BHW for £397 etc and they are quite good regarding the fact that they are all ready made.

What are you thoughts on this?

It seems more like a semi-scam or some kind of scheme.

If you bought the package, you'd just be paying £600 for some shady telemarketers to call you, find out your credit card limits, and hard-sell you on upgrades until that limit is reached. And then disappear. It's a very old scam used to take the savings off old people and the loan money off students, just retooled for the internet. 50 years ago he would have pitched you something about hosting tupperware parties or envelope stuffing, but it's all the same idea - pitch a flawed business model and allow the flaws to filter out people who aren't desperate or "stupid" (ie. trusting) and then hard-sell the desperate/stupid people until all their money is gone.

They have conventions like that two where they get people to attend a class about making money online with an eStore, and then they persuade them to buy a $2,000 course on it.
