Im working on a fairly new amazon affiliate niche website and the brand new domain wasn't brand new after all, its about 6 years old. After bringing up the history at archive.org, the site was also an amazon affiliate site and was targeting my exact product and niche.

Webmaster tools is clear of any penalty messages and the site is indexed on the search engine. I ran the site through ahrefs and checked out the backlinks profile which only shows 2 random blog sites. However, majestic indicates 1500+ historical backlinks which kinda throws me off. I also ran the site through this penalty checker tool, it shows my sight maybe sandboxed or penalized.

What do you guys recommend I do with this site of mine? Continue building it up or cut my losses and start a new domain?

    Thanks!

The same thing happened to me. I got a 2-year-old domain that is sandboxed or penalized. Not sure what to do.

My policy in general is if in doubt, use another domain. Better to be sure of the new domain you are working with and put 100% into it. Rather than always having doubts about the current domain. For this particular domain i would cut it lose and use another clean history domain.

At least you can use the old content if it passes on copy scape

You'll be fine using your content on a different domain.

How long has it been connected to webmaster tools? Might take awhile for an old penalty to show up.

If you're having doubts, find a new site, check it, then switch over. If you haven't started major work, no worries yet.

I've used the exact same content from a penalized domain of mine before (within the last 5 months) with no issues.

The domain was penalized for back links (imagine that). I just got a new domain and cloned the site and moved it to the new

The content ranks well even though the old penalized domain is still indexed for the most part. In fact several of the pieces of content rank higher than the old domain pre penalty.

Before he does anything, he should be submitting to Google through GWT, as he says he has it setup. If it doesn't index within 24 hours, move on without question.

If it starts ranking then you are good to go, if it doesnt, you can replace the domain.

Even if it indexes does not mean it is free of penalty. Could be panda related or penguin related. He says he is just starting out. So why take the 'chance' with this domain when he can just use a clean and new one and have any doubt removed.

Yes but why go through all this trouble. he says it thought it was new and so just starting out....so just use another new domain that is actually clean.

There is a certain risk involved to decide and I can't make that decision for him without having more info.

Well he said the site had 1500+ historical backlinks and 6 years ago was used an an amazon aff site targeting same niche + product......so if the last owner didnt keep the site, chances are its penalised in the past and retains some of that 'bad' history and will never rank thesame as a clean site.

Naah its not always correct. Chances are that the previous owner was not able to provide valuable content and couldn't rank the site.
