My whole story is summed up in the following chat log. Perhaps others may also benefit if they find themselves in a similar situation.

(07:15:15 PM) System: There are currently 0 people in front of you and 84 chat technicians assisting customers.
(07:15:34 PM) Bob Da: has entered the chat.
(07:15:40 PM) Bob Da: How may I assist you today?
(07:15:42 PM) Bob Da: Welcome to HostGator Live Chat.
    (07:15:49 PM) Joe: Hello
(07:16:00 PM) Bob Da: Hello. How are you?
(07:16:31 PM) Joe: I created an account with HG a few months ago because I found a coupon for $0.01 hosting for the month
(07:16:48 PM) Joe: I stopped using the account after that months, but kept getting billed
(07:17:07 PM) Joe: now I want to use my account again, but I don't want to pay for months I didn't use it, what are my options?
(07:17:18 PM) Bob Da: Okay. May I please know the primary domain name on your account, or the email address on your billing?
    (07:17:34 PM) Joe: sure, xxxx
(07:18:00 PM) Bob Da: Please allow me a moment to check into this for you.
    (07:18:04 PM) Joe: sure thing
(07:20:43 PM) Bob Da: Unfortunatly, even if you stop using the account, but dont cancel the account, you will still be billed. If you want to start a new account you will have to cancel the old account, pay the past invoices and resign up.
(07:21:10 PM) Joe: so pretty much I need to sign up for blue host or just host instead?
(07:22:38 PM) Bob Da: Before you make that move, Please allow me another moment to check into this for you.
    (07:22:50 PM) Joe: okay
(07:27:12 PM) Bob Da: Still working on it.
(07:27:24 PM) Joe: not a problem
(07:34:30 PM) Bob Da: I am still on the case!!
(07:34:58 PM) Joe: that's ok, I'm just reading up on other web hosts in case it comes to that
(07:35:15 PM) Bob Da: Okay. Here is the deal that we are offering you.
(07:36:18 PM) Bob Da: We are willing to delete three of the four invoices if you are willing to pay one, which will bring you current and your account active.
(07:37:02 PM) Joe: hrm... not exactly what I was hoping for, but it does sound fair regardless
(07:37:36 PM) Bob Da: See, you wont get this kind of service anywhere else!!
(07:37:39 PM) Joe: I guess for the hassle it saves me, it's worth it...
(07:37:59 PM) Joe: I admit, you have been very helpful Bob :)
(07:39:03 PM) Bob Da: Thank you!! I do my best! Was there anything else I could do for you while I still have you in chat?
(07:39:36 PM) Joe: not right now, although that may change when I get to work on my web site
(07:39:45 PM) Joe: thank you Bob, have a nice day
(07:40:08 PM) Bob Da: Okay, take care and have a great rest of the day! Thank you for using HostGator Live Chat. If you could take a minute to rate your experience with HostGator as well as my overall performance, that would help us to improve our customer service. To do that, you can send an email to xxx and briefly review your experience, or, just click the button that says Rate and Exit in the upper right hand corner. The survey takes less than a minute to fill out.
(07:40:32 PM) Joe: closed this chat intentionally.

P.S. Anyone know how to stop those smilies from taking over the time stamp?

Yeah HG are good at doing that. Softlayer as well. Try cancel a dedicated server with them and they quickly offer insane discounts to keep you.

Hostgator does rock. Though they are slightly more expensive than bluehost i have to tell you it's worth every penny. I used bluehost and justhost for the past 2 years or so. I recently decided to start using hostgator and that sh*t is fast. Seriously, my websites on bluehost run slow and it takes forever sometimes to publish a new post. Not only that, but bluehost goes down often. With hostgator my sites run incredibly fast both. Justhost def sucks more than bluehost though.

@ch8878 Always a troll/instigator and a person that says "Look I can piss further than you!" on each thread.

Yeah no kidding man, only a true newbie ( or kid ) calls everyone a newbie!
I have been into this shit for 10+ years, been with mama and papa hosts and bargain hosts as well. I Haven't seen customer service like these guys. I can get tech and sales support in seconds and they deal with my shit and yes some days its nasty shit with professionalism. Yes they are more costly, but who gives a crap? If my traffic is costing $100 and hr and shit hits the fan they have always been there. Yes I also use Godaddy, and yes they cost more, but again know cares, the service I get from them is great as well.

Having the BabyCroc plan for more than 2 years now and can´t complain as well. Every time I used the support (most of the times because of being stupid by myself) they´re very helpful.

I was a fan of HG but not anymore! i was running some autoblogs on a baby plan and everything was fine, one of my ABs start to getting 30K+ per day, and everything was fine for more than 6 months in general and 3 months I was receiving 30K per day...I think after that they checked the websites that receiving too much traffic on their sharing host to blackmail them, And that what happens to me... suddenly my website became a load maker (BTW, at that time my traffic dropped to 20K per day), and they sent me an email that i have to do bla bla to reduce the load, one of the funny things they ask that i have to install a Super cache plugin that i already have , but i think its template. i went to the live support and told them what to do, and that i already have a cache plugin...He didn't told me to take a higher plan, but i felt from his talking that i have to upgrade to something handle my load! so i told him that i'll take a VPS, so what is the best level for me? He told me level 4 at least lol... So from $10 per moth i'm now paying $80 with the cPanel. And do you know what? my website down 4 times in my first month with the VPS!!! Every time the support tell me that the load are high! I don't know maybe i'm hosting eBay and i dont know lol
So now i have decided to leave this shitty company and i'll take a Dede in a real company that dont have an affiliate program and over sell.
So beware, if you grow with HG, the gator will flollow you to eat you unless you feed him with your money. So they are fine with small websites, but run from them if you become fat!

that pretty much sealed it. good work :D

if you pushed a little further they probably would've reinstated you for free since you weren't planning to pay the bill anyway and you would've just been a lost customer.

Not used HG before but someone above said "they may not be the cheapest".

Surely, for their babyplan of $7.95 a month for unlimited domains and unlimited bandwidth is a cracking deal?

Won't this mean you only ever need 1 account as you can host all your domains on there, or am I missing something here?

I kind of wish I did push to get all four months for free, but ultimately I never actually wanted to go to bluehost or justhost. I probably would have paid all four months regardless since I really wanted an HG account. Although a couple minutes work ended up saving me $30!

To the "I can piss further than you" guy: You're half right. That's not a bad thing though; everyone was inexperienced at some point. ;)

I too have once exploited Hostgator for an extra Google Adwords voucher. Good stuff!
