    I've a site that's been at #3 for around 7 months for something that's searched a lot.

Now today I checked and it looks like a competitor website (same domain name but different tld) is above
    Me so I'm #4.

But here's the weird part, the site has been hacked ! Although the website is as it always was,on google it says "hacked by ______" Along with this the website I have around 10 times as much articles as they do (that's what both sites use for Seo really). Backlinks are pretty much equal.

Do you think this is permanent ? For all this time my site never has changed positions so i don't know what to do.

This other website isn't exactly new,but my site is a bit older.

My pageviews are already done a good bit :( but since under the other website it says "hacked by ____" I presume people wouldn't want to click on it.

I doubt it will be permanent, if anything you should be better off. They will probably get a big fall in rank soon, and you will lose a competitor. I wouldn't worry about it too much, just keep doing what you are doing.

That's what I was thinking,it could help me - hopefully.

But the sites content is no different than it was before being hacked :/ but surely google has a way to see it's been hacked - so shouldn't be page 1 then ?

No it is not permanent. But during these 3 months, I am sure that most SEO gurus are helpless since they do not know how to answer these kind of questions.

Reason: Because for these 3 months, g is behaving like crazy. Someone says "autoblogs don't do good anymore". But mine are doing pretty well moreover they have adsense on them and no problem for a long time.

On the contrary, I have some 30 domains in very specific niches (so no heavy traffic-even 10 is enough for them for a day). And they are like tides on the sea. So big fluctuations.

And your question. IMHO, you will be better in SERPs (that means at least #2). Just try to do what you have done. Never do blackhat, scrapebox, and xrumer. Don't do anything abnormal. Don't try to write more articles. Do not change your theme or visual elements. Do not get more than necessary backlinks.

    Good Luck.

    Thanks for the reply above.

Yeah this site is 100% whitehat,I've only used xrumer with one of my new sites that I made last week.

It's just annoying though, another site with a lot less work and it's been hacked above my site :/

I'm planning on doing some blog commenting tomorrow to try help it - but is that stupid ? Since my site has VERY little backlinks, but so does this site that has outranked me.

You will get most of his visitors anyway, so I wouldn't worry :)

Come to think of it - it happened to me some years ago - my site was hacked and it also moved ahead in ranking only to drop below its previous position...

Someone has suggested I should report the site to google that it has been hacked. Should I do that ?

Looks like the site is ok now.

And also looks like it's outranked me on yahoo and bing now.

I really can't understand why,I've done nothing wrong.

Maybe I should only have 2 articles instead of 20 to make more money :S

My articles are good quality too.

There are too many variables to pin point the reason why a competitors site can outrank yours. Just because you have the same amount/more links compared to your competitor doesn't mean you'll rank above him. You can't measure it as black and white, if he has 5 pages of content and you have 10 you'll beat him out. Sorry to say but it doesn't work that way.

Oh yeah I know, but the other site doesn't have any extra backlinks or extra content.

And I'm sure the on site SEO is pretty much the same as mine.

So I can't think of anything else that's working in the other sites favour tbh
