So I just bought a domain with a really great backlink profile. I was very eager to buy it and forgot to check if the site was indexed (which I usually do).

Afterwards I checked and it was not indexed. What does this really mean? Have I just bought a penalized domain?

Just to make sure, type in google, "site:yoursite.com" without quotes to confirm and if nothing shows up, it has more than likely been de-indexed or penalized from Google. Or, who know, maybe it hasn't had anything on it for so long, there's nothing TO index. Put a page up with some content and see what happens over the week.
Someone else will either confirm this or tell you the ACTUAL reason, but that's what I think.

Yeah that's what I did. But even though there's no content, shouldn't the root domain index anyway?

Is there any way to check if it's actually penalized without using GWT?

If the backlink profile is good as you said and the domain was not used for spam(web.archive) then it means the previous owner removed the url from google. Dont worry.

check the web archive, and see if it has some over optimization.
and as apricot said, try publishing some content, share to twitter or other sn(s) and leave it for a week, and see if it work, that's the best way.

In case it would be penalized, could a 301 be able to do the trick?

I'm seeing some bad advice here. Just because a domain is no longer indexed doesn't mean it's penalized... and NO the root URL would not show up if it's been de-indexed. Most likely what happened is it expired and no content was up, so Google felt there was no point in having the domain indexed any longer. Therefore, you should test to see if you can get it indexed. There are a few fast ways to do this:

    1. Through up a wordpress blog, by default it will ping the search engines, but you can use a bulk pinging tool if you want to speed up the process. I find Google usually indexes the site within a few minutes to a few hours.

    2. Through up a site and use Instant Link Indexer. Should be indexed anywhere from 1 minute to a couple of hours.

    3. Website Stat Blasting (scrapebox has a tool for this) also some online tools. This will generate thousands of stats pages that link back to you, and Google should index in 5 minutes to 48 hours.

If your site still isn't indexed after 24-48 hours try installing Google webmaster tools, if the site is penalized it'll likely show up there in a few days.

It's most likey penalized, but you should set up a WordPress blog with some content and wait for few days and if you still don't see your site in google then it's penalized.

I bought a domain recently and threw up a WP site on it, didn't get indexed at all for over a week so I dropped the root into nohands seo link indexer and it appeared very soon after.

Maybe you just need to give it a nudge.

I have a similar domain and it's not appearing in google even after installing WP. I'll try to put it in an indexer and see what happens. :) Thanks for the advice mate ;)

So I added some new content and ran it through several indexing services, still not indexed.

I'm pretty sure its penalized, is there anything I can do to utilize the domain somehow?
