So I'm wondering if you guys have experience with this. I know (i think) that Google hates small niche sites, but is the size of the site really the problem when it comes to getting penalized? Or has it just been bad link building, too high of keyword density, too many ads and so on?

Let's say you find what looks like a good keyword to target but you don't want to spend money on 20 or 50 articles for example to find out even if it's a site worth pursuing. Would it be smart to just try ranking for that 1 keyword with 1 good article at first and then see if it's worth adding to?

I don't plan on building small sites, but i'd also like to try and cut costs at least at first and be able to test my site a little before investing too much into it. Any advice would be appreciated.

The size of a site in what way, in pages or articles on pages?
I'd say quality articles and good backlinks in tier 1 are your first port of call. You don't have to spend much for good articles, say $3 each. I write my own for tier 1. There are so many services on here to choose from, go have a look.

    Newff,

The size of the site does not matter however if you are doing something that search engines frown upon, a smaller site (in terms of number of pages) can sometimes be a red flag (along with many other factors).

In general though, its completely possible for a site with only a few pages to be very popular and rank very well in search. There are a few caveats to that though. For example the more pages you have the more opportunities you have to optimize for more keywords.

    Best,

I guess I meant number of pages. For example I find a keyword that I'm just not sure will rank. Then I get an article around 1000 words long for the main page and targeting my main keyword. Then build some links and see how well that page ranks. If it ranks well , then start buying more articles and creating more pages.

I don't plan on having any sites only 5 pages long or so, but I'm wondering if it would be good to just start with 1 page sites, give them time to see if they rank and depending on how well they do then either drop them or make them bigger.

So for example your main keyword is "CD Player Reviews". You build a site with 1 page targeting that keyword, if it ranks well then start targeting other keywords and writing reviews of different CD Players and so on.
