So for the past year I have been banking off a niche site that at its peak was making 3k monthly. But the content was rarely updated and my link building was lame at best.
So after seeing a huge dump by the latest Panda I have decided that now is the time to take on a more whitehat approach.
I have found a niche that I know very well and am going to build a user content driven site with no manual link building
(With the exception of exchanging links with other well known authority sites in my niche and related forum posts manually posted.)

I believe this will work as the niche itself is user content driven and no-body has devoted to making an AS site as I plan to do. There are a few AS sites in the niche but nothing like I am going to offer.
The reason that I think this can be pulled off without manually link building is because Google has recently taken a liking to strange things.......like sites with almost no links. I figure that by combining a site with constant unique content and natural link-building that I can give the Google monster exactly what it wants.

Some important things to mention before I start on this.

    I'm using wordpress.
I've never made an AS site before so I LOVE suggestions.
No I won't tell you my niche.
Will monetize with CPA and adsense.
This will be as close to 100% whitehat as possible.
    Content will be posted everyday.
All content will be at least 400+ words unique.
I am not targeting any particular keywords. Each post will by default have a topic, but the word will not be used more than one or twice and I'm trying to avoid writing alot of content about the same topics.
Any writers that want to donate some content will be forever loved!

So here is what I have so far.

A TLD that matches my goal.
    Good theme
Lots of plugins to encourage social interaction
Hooked up to Google Webmaster tools
    Sitemap
5 posts already up and 25 more on the way.
Contacted several webmaster in my niche about link exchange
    About us page
    Contact us page
    Submit content page

So I will try to keep this updated as I venture into the world of the AS sites!

If you use software like Market Samurai to gauge your competition, you'll see that sites without links are not actually valued as highly by google. I don't think you can rank at all except for a very small niche, and that's probably not going to rake in 3k a month. Furthermore, these sites will only rank high until competition who does link build comes along--how can google decide to devalue links? It's only an algorithm that must rely on other webmasters' "recommendatons" to know what content people will like most

Friendly advice here--don't try to reinvent the wheel, this is what works, and you can't totally ignore proven methods untill you've mastered them. If you were hurt in the past, wipe off the blood and go back to the grind, this time a little smarter.

Well don't think of this as me not linkbuilding. But more along the lines of linkbuilding as Google wants it. Instead of x amount of web 2.0s I'll try for x amount of related site guest posts. With all luck I'll have my users doing this as it's more of a social thing. I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel, just change it to what Google thinks it should be.
With all the new updates it seems that new and fresh content is being valued more and more, so that's what I'm going for.
Thanks for your input though, I'll keep it in mind. I want my site to be as close to white as possible, but we can't always have what we want. =/

    • Added the network publisher plugin and filled almost every account slot
    • Added a huge ping list
    • Linked out to an major AS in my niche
    • Made a guest post for a wiki site(400+ words unique)
    • Added WMT/Analytics
    • Hugged my cat
    • Took my GF on a date

Gunna make this a really nice site, can't wait to see things in a week!

    Update 4/25/2012

Not anything really amazing going on. But I am taking advantage of the latest Google facerape and writing some content based on niche related topics that now have no real content in the top ten.
I'm getting a tad bit of traffic from Bing, and ranking for a few reallllllly long tails in Google.
For some reason I got over 150 spider visits today, seems like a good thing.
On a side note Google Analytics is showing me a 38% bounce rate, very happy with that. Also signed up for Bing webmaster, just to see how that works.

I'm doing something similar :) never made a site with over 20 pages before. Aiming for at least 100 pages on this site.

Writing my own articles at the moment, aiming for no less than 600 words on each. My plan isn't to rank for competitive keywords straight away but long tail keywords. Going to launch the site with 20 pages then try and add an article every day. Because it's something I'm interested in this shouldn't be a problem.

Once everything is indexed I may start very slow backlinking. Trying to emulate how a site would naturally get backlinks really.

Anyway good luck mate, I'll be reading your journey.

    Update 4/27/2012
Still waiting for Bing webmaster tools to start giving me some data, and Google WMT lags soooo far behind that it's almost impossible to tell where I really am. In the past few days I've spent my time making more posts and a few manual blog comments on related pages. All the content that I have written so far is highly targeted and USEFUL, whenever I drop a link I make sure that the page I'm linking to is highly relevant and will be of use to anyone who decides to click through.
So far I have around 30 posts give or take, all hand written and around 300-600 words depending on the topic. Most of the posts have pictures each picture has a name/desc. Got over 100 views for the first time today, hope this trend continues!

Haven't read that but something jumped up at me:
    NO! NOO! NOOO! NOOOO!

    No Google Webmasters Tools
    No Google Analytics
    No Google AdSense if possible
    No Google *insert-service-here*

BTW, Instead of Analytics you can use Piwik

I don't use Google services on blackhat sites, nor greyhat sites, not bluehat sites, nor pinkhat sites, nor whitehat sites and no sane person would. Trust me, in the long run they will fu*k you up so bad you won't believe it and their services are their "trojan horse" into your business.

Well I'm going to have to use adsense untill I find the time to target down some CPA offers once I get a steady flow of traffic. I took your advice and installed Piwik, liking it so far. I'm not quite sure why I should run from other Google services though, people seem to get boned either way.

I lucked out to be honest. Right after the (25th)update hit I found a term with about 25k searches a month in my niche. No good pages were ranking for it so I made a post, then proceeded to get a link that that post posted on 3 sites in the top ten for the term. That traffic is all referral at this time, but I hope my content will get picked up and ranked.

This is an extremely inspirational thread - many thanks.

One thing I picked up on though, in your first post...
If we don't know the niche, how can we write relevant content?

    Magic!

On another note, when should I start putting adsense up?

This is my plan for adsense, it may not work for you; I'm not sure. I'm going to wait until I have at least 50 pages of good content. Stuff that I'm happy to show off. Then I'll send lots of emails out to webmasters whose readers my find some of my content useful.

I think I'm 10 times more likely to get backlinks from the webmasters I email if I don't have adsense on my site than if I do. Because my site will just look like it's trying to give out good information; not make money.

Also I'm going to wait until I've done my press releases for the same reason; a site with no ads may look more trustworthy to people who could potentially link to it.

The money made from adsense at this stage wouldn't be much anyway.

    Update 4/30/2012
About to write another post and throw up another youtube video, need to tack down some keywords for it first.
I managed about 200 views yesterday, sadly they were mostly from the manual blog comments that I made.
Still not really picking up much organic SE traffic, kinda sad because I have some really bomb content.

Think I'm going to wait on implementing any type of monetizing till I reach the 500+ views per day mark, this gives me a nice space to work out how I should do this.
