Thank you for clicking on my journey, I know many people say this but, I hope to keep this up for the long term. So here goes nothing! :p

About Me - I'll keep this quick.
I started IM around a year ago when I bought a MNS service. That site made a few bucks a month so I decided to make a few myself just as a hobby. I ended up making a few hundred a month until a new Google update wiped them out for poor seo and only focusing on one keyword. I have dabbled in a few different sites since then but I haven't really committed myself to anyone of them and haven't really made any money consistently. But that should change eventually when I get this site earning.

    The Plan -
I have a somewhat unique plan for this niche site involving the keyword research. I will go into the keyword research a little more thoroughly in a post below. But essentially what I did was instead of focusing on a large traffic keyword as my main keyword like many niche sites, I decided to focus my site on a broad niche and have a few medium traffic keywords to use as siloscategories and then have lower competition and lower traffic keywords as longtails of these medium traffic keywords.

    Goals for this project -
I don't have too high of goals since it is my first niche site. But, obviously I would love to see consistent money every month from this site. So, I'm going to set my goal to be at least $25 per day consistently in six months from now so at the end of February 2014. I'm not sure how probable that is, but I hope to make even more than that. ;)

    So far I have -
    • Bought the domain
    • Installed some needed plugins
    • Installed Heatmap Theme
    • Wrote a 1500 word directed at a medium traffic silo keyword.

Thanks for reading, I'll be sure to keep updates listed in the thread.

Wishing you luck man. But why the heck would you rely solely on SEO as a traffic source? Like I've read on here before, you need to think of your traffic as a tripod where SEO only accounts for one of the legs. There are many other ways to get traffic besides google, so don't be scared to investigate! If you are very confused, you can PM me and I can give you insights on how I get traffic.

Also, are you using wordpress to silo your site? If so, good luck... I know its possible, but this is a terrible platform to create a tight and sturdy silo structure.

How I did my keyword research -

I started off with a very broad niche. Lets just say I picked "Sports" (you may want a smaller niche, I just picked this as it was the first example that popped in my head". After that I would put I split my niche into 4-8 smaller niches which would then be my categories or medium traffic keywords. Examples of these would be "soccer", "basketball", "tennis", "golf", ect. (With me my categories were around 5k local searches per month - 10k, instead of the large amount my example categories would be.

After that, I took my category keywords and I put them into longtail pro,(you can do this in google keyword tool but it will take longer). I put the filters as so:

    • Minimum of 3 words
    • 250-3k local searches per month (yes I go as low as 250 searches)
    • I use google title competition just for the first run through for keywords. I set it below 10k but i'm not sure how much it actually maters.
    • I use a CPC of $.5 or higher (sometimes I go lower)
After I do this I let longtail pro run and I wait until it's done. Once it's done I start shifting through the keywords. When looking at the lower amount of searches per month keywords (250-1k) you can normally find some very weak competition. My niche is not the greatest as there are a few strong authorities but I love the subject so that makes it a little easier for me. But, for the keywords I normally look for competition like this:
    • No homepage domains (like footballtraining.com or something like that) We want subdomains(footballtraining.com/training/trainingfootball209)
    • I love seeing yahoo answers, I don't know why but I normally just searched for keywords with yahoo answers in it, because I feel with just a few back links I can at least get yahoo answers spot.
    • Low amount of back links and juice page links (in longtail pro) I like seeing under 15 for lower competition. For bigger keywords (1k-5k) I'm more willing to tackle harder competition.
    • I didn't really focus on the site age too much which may cause me problems but we will see. My reasoning is that if they aren't even targeting the keyword a younger site with good back links should rank over them.
    • I love to not see the keyword in the url or the title. With lower searches I can easily find searches with only less than 3 of the top 10 targeting the keyword in the title and none in the url.

I got around 10 keywords per category, but if I go back and do more keyword research I can easily find around 30+ per category that have very low competition.

Side note - I bought a brandable domain, not a domain that has a specific keyword. For example pigskinfan.com for a football site.

I may have left something out but I'm not sure. Thanks for reading.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1

I don't think I explained that right, I guess i'll edit it to explain it better. But what I meant by silo was that the medium traffic keywords were main categories and under that were smaller keywords.

I got my first visitor from google under a 7 word longtail. I am also working on 10 more pieces of content including another category keyword which is around 4k searches. And 9 other smaller searched keyword articles.

    This will work
its a matter of keeping going
Best of luck in your journey

    Heres a tip
Don't SEO the articles too much
1% Density the main keyword in each article but use as many LSI as is possible
Write for people not the search engines

This way you wil rank for 1000s of keywords without much effort

I really do not understand people when giving such advice. Write for people AND the search engines too. Why only do 1 when you can do both? But yes LSI is a really good suggestion especially after the last updates.
    Good luck with your journey!

I have been trying to do both, i still have to work on adding a few more LSI's but as of now it is great content for the readers and it should be good for the search engines.

I have gotten my content, and I am doing the on page seo as we speak.

I have been getting 1-2 visitors per day specifically from google, bing, and yahoo for longtails which is pretty good for being a young site with 2 posts and without any off page seo.
