    Welcome!

So - I've been on this site for some time now, attempting various methods, trying a few journey's but never really getting anywhere with them. I wanted to start a fresh with a new idea and see how I could go with just doing things on services that I don't have to pay for (sans hosting). I shouldn't be paying for services, bots or otherwise as it just puts me into the red even more than I already am with hosting costs and the like.

I realise that the counter argument to that is that you can't hope to make money on the internet without paying for some services / grey hat methods to get you started. I don't really subscribe to that mentality as everything a bot does a person sitting at a keyboard can you, you just take a little longer.

Anyway! Enough prattling. Let me get down to the nitty gritty. My goal for this journey is simply to create an online presence, financial gain is somewhat secondary - I'm not looking to make a million dollars with my idea (although it'd be nice.) Basically my idea is through Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter and Facebook gain a social following to funnel into my website which will be laced with Amazon affiliate links for monetization & adsense.

What I'm most looking for out of this journey is social growth. While I'll be updating this thread every few days with my social footprint gains (followers, likes etc.) I'll also include a brief income report (although it's not going to be good for a long time - I have a plan for that).

My secondary goal is to create a community on my blog website. The niche that I've targeted has a lot of devout followers who are all willing to show off something - I can leverage this in a few ways and as time goes on I'll detail how I'm going to do that - but for now lets have a look at the stats.

    Social Following Changes

    Instagram: 19 Posts | 134 Follows | 227 Following

Instagram is where I started with all of this - so I've actually done some work with gaining followers there.

    Tumblr: 0 Posts | 0 Followers | 7 Following
    Facebook: 0 Posts | 0 Likes
    Twitter: 0 Posts | 0 Followers | 0 Following

    Income:

    Adsense: $0.00
    Amazon Affiliates: 0 Ordered Items | 0 Clicks | Conversion 0%

Obviously there's a lot of things in there that are at 0 as I've just made them. My plan for the social media accounts are as follows:

    Every day:

    - Follow 30-50 accounts on Twitter, Instagram & Tumblr related to my niche.
    - Like / Reblog / Retweet 20-30 posts on Twitter, Instagram & Tumblr.

Post 2-5 images a day to my Instagram - I have set up a IFTTT which will get this image - send it to Tumblr and then Tumblr is set up to autopost any new images onto my Facebook and Twitter pages.

Ultimately what I'm looking for with this flow is that a user will get exposed to the URL of my website at some stage. I have put into the IFTTT recipe my websites URL - which -should- be OK as per the ToS of Tumblr. I'll let everyone know how that goes.

    Thanks!

Well one week on and I've learned SO much about social media marketing. It's really been super beneficial to be doing all of this manually as you get a much better scope of how the work you put in affects your profile. So, in the last week I went about building up my social media accounts - started work on my website / blog / forum & community stuff. I also spent a lot of time on another project which ties in nicely into this one.

First - the week in numbers:

    Social Following Changes

    Instagram: 36 Posts (+17 Posts) | 813 Followers (+679 Followers) | 853 Following (+626 Following)

    Tumblr: 14 Posts | 1 Followers | 85 Following

    Twitter: 7 Posts | 11 Followers | 24 Following

All in all I'm really happy with the stats for the past week. It's pretty obvious where I've put my time. I've spent all of it on Instagram, just trying to get my profile as big as I can - it's been working pretty well, I've been getting hits on my website with referral from Instagram, Facebook & Twitter. You might have seen that I've removed Facebook from the list of Social Media - while it's probably the most important social media to have a presence on - I hadn't gotten a single like all week, despite trying, I also think that I'm aiming more towards a mobile audience, and Instagram is mobile only, which is good.

    Income:

    Adsense:
    $0.00
    Amazon Affiliates:
    0 Ordered Items | 5 Clicks | Conversion 0%

As you can see - not much on the income side of things - that's OK though, I wasn't really planning on having anything happen on that front for quite some time.

In the next week I'm hoping to have over 1500 Followers on Instagram & I've just thought of a really good way of possibly monetising another element of my entire idea which will take some time to implement, but would be a boon if I could get it up and running.

    Nnewell out.

Well - apologies for it being such a long time since my last update, I've been really busy with my journey and just haven't had the time to write an actual update. I've been doing a heap of work on my social media profile & also on my website - trying to get traffic through the door without paying for it is a challenge. But it has been mildly successful. I actually made my first money this week which is nice.

    The numbers:

    Social Following Changes

    Instagram: 74 Posts (+38) | 3367 Followers (+2554) | 4348 Following (+3495)

    Tumblr: 24 Posts (+10) | 6 Followers (+5) | 95 Following (+10)

    Twitter: 34 Tweets (+27) | 58 Followers (+47) | 320 Following (+296)

Not a bad week - I've been putting a small amount of work into Twitter with some new posts & followings. I've again spent my time on Instagram though - and it's been doing me well.

All in all I've been attempting to get people to visit the website and interact with it, that's where I'm concerned.

I'll hopefully have a little more time next week to post up more information about everything, but it's been a success so far.

Keep in mind these posts are more than a week apart - that's a weeks growth.

I'll post a quick update as there has been developments made which will hopefully grow on the good numbers I've been seeing.

I'm a programmer by trade - so it was my natural instinct to see what I could do with the Instagram API in regards to follow / unfollow, posting etc. etc.

However - with the current API - you can't post to Instagram & also you aren't able to follow / unfollow without special permission. Which made things nearly impossible to do through the API. So I built around that.

    I've developed a few things:

    1. A python script which pulls down all media relating to a tag from instagram. And then stores these results (image included) into a database.
    2. A locally hosted website which allows me to add my own description to an image. and then post to social media.
    3. A system which reverse engineers the Instagram API to allow me to post from a PHP file.
    4. ???
    5. Profit!

There is a secret sauce step in there that I'm not going to share, but suffice to say there are tools out there that allow you to get around the fact that the API is very restrictive for non-business users.

In regards to your question - I work on a 2 day follow back system. I'll follow between 500-1000 accounts. Making sure I haven't followed them before (I have a big spreadsheet.) I mark down who I follow and then in two days unfollow them, marking down if the relationship was a "success" or "failure." If it was successful, obviously I don't need to follow them again to try and get them to follow back. If it failed then I don't really want to try and follow them again because that seems a bit spammy.

I generally follow followers of bigger names in my niche, which I have a list of. I also have a whitelist of people that I want to keep following despite unfollowing everyone at the end of the 2 day cycle.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Well - another week down and there has been a lot of changes made to how I'm now doing things. I've invested more time into the "Moneyball" mentality of gaining followers and I hope this will reflect in the numbers you see.

As I mention in my previous post, I've been programming a new way of doing things with Instagram - and certainly all the social networks that I'm working with. Instagram is still the chief concern for me as I want to be gaining followers there as I feel it's been the easiest of the networks to get into and be a part of.

    So, the numbers:

    Social Following Changes

    Instagram: 80 Posts (+6) | 3367 Followers (+191) | 258 Following (-4090)

    Tumblr: 24 Posts (+0) | 7 Followers (+1) | 97 Following (+2)

    Twitter: 34 Tweets | 68 Followers (+10) | 321 Following (+1)

So - the biggest number there has been my following dump on Instagram - over 4000 unfollowed. This has been part of my new method - I'm attempting to follow / unfollow on a 2 day rotating schedule - working on a percentage base rather then a pure numbers base. I'm interested in converted relationships, not base follow amount. Because if I follow 100,000 accounts in a row I may only get 1,000 followers from it and then have to invest the time in unfollowing all those people. What is better is working on a rotating schedule which allows me to see the effectiveness of following a person under certain conditions, for example, time of day, if I've just posted new content, if I've just put up a new blog post. How many people I follow in the rotation, etc. etc.

And what I'm after is the pure % of followbacks, I'm interested to see just how well a conversion rate I have from a "cold-call" follow. I'll hopefully have some better numbers tomorrow - as that's the unfollow expiry date for the most recent "follow" set. I'm hovering at around 60% followback now, which is unusually high, but may be skewed somewhat by "critical mass" followers, who are following me without me having followed them before, or anything.

Anyway, I'm babbling, I hope I have some more concrete numbers for you in the next 24 hours.

Good luck man, I'm really curious about those numbers. I'm doing something like you with my newest accounts right now, with the FLC option in FollowLiker. The followback rate is around 55-60% so far (3 days), which is ridiculously high for me. On my other accounts with simple folowing I got max 30%.

    Keep it up dude!

Hey, thanks! I'm not using any paid services, but I've got a system pretty similar to FollowLiker. Just built it myself. What you have to be careful of is unfollowing after the rotation. That's been the thing for me is that I'm losing a lot of followers to unfollowinf after I unfollow them.

Well - I finally got the program I've been building to a stage where it outputs something that is tangible and I'm able to grade rotation by rotation. I'm currently on the unfollow section of my second rotation so far. The numbers are a little skewed, because I've been messing about with my follow, whitelist and followed before lists. But here we go:

    Follower Growth: 3367 -> 4038 this represents a 19.92871993% growth in Followers

This has been in TWO separate rotations - one of 250 followers and one of 1000. The 1000 was more successful in terms of a percentage gain - I feel that it's because of the time of day that I did the follow section at.

Now that I'm comfortable that I've got the rotation down pat, I'll be pumping up these numbers to slightly larger, but probably not break 1500 at any point. It's too risky to be doing things on that scale.

At 1000 followers to unfollow, it takes my program a little over 2 hours to unfollow everyone, it will then go about starting up a new rotation.

    It's fairly simple.

In terms of my what else is going on. My niche is one where people can send in their own versions of the thing that I post regularly, so I have a great amount of user interaction. I'm currently working on a way that I can post both to Instagram and to my blog automatically without having to worry about formatting or anything, it just doubles up and posts to both at the same time. I'm currently having to manually post on my blog and it's suffering because of it.

Secondly, I've been experimenting with ways in which to engage with my user base a little more. Having a huge following on Instagram is all well and good, but if it's just a number and not a user then it's not really worth it being there. I've started asking people to sign up to a mailing list as part of a drive to have another avenue through which to send people content. My plan for this content is for there to be a weekly email newsletter that goes out detailing the "best" of my channels for the week.

Thirdly, I've been trying to think of a way to incorporate YouTube into my niche idea and I think I'm onto a winner A "Top 10 XXX of the week." I'll need to get a bit more of a following for that to work properly, but I can see it being a pretty awesome thing if I manage to get it going. It'd be just another avenue I can explore to create a following as I'm able to talk directly with my user base.

Anyway, I'm still just plugging away at Instagram, hoping that I'll crack 5k followers during the next few rotations, once I'm into the swing of things there I'm going to focus on growing my other social networks to get into line with Instagram, although from what I'm experiencing, there is a much greater following and faithful user base behind Instagram than other networks.

Your bot unfollowed 1000 persons in 2 hours?

Yes. It does. As I've explained a little earlier in this thread. There is a way to get around the API restrictions of rate limiting. I built something that does that. So yeah, approximately two hours or something like that to unfollow that many.

Sorry :(. Took me a long time to build it and it's pretty rickety. I'll post some proof here in the next few hours of what it can do. I'm starting my follow section soon so I'll post up when I start and finish.

This was at 10:32 in the morning here in Australia, I'm following 1250 people. I've taken out private information and niche related stuff.

Here I am two hours later. Yes, I know, it's only 500 - I had some technical hiccups along the way, but I'm still going over the 200 per hour which is normal.

I'll keep doing this as proof of concept for my program.

What program did you use to create this bot?
