Not sure if this would be the right forum, but you can move it if need be.

So I posted a thread a while ago about buying an app and what it entailed. There wasnt much info on the forums and what I found on the internet wasnt all that great. So I started my journey and I'm learning along the way.

I found an app that I liked a while back in the Play Store. It had a good rating (I honestly didnt read them) and it was an interesting app. So I downloaded it and began to use it. After about a month of use I noticed a lot of bugs among other things. So i went to leave a review and noticed that the rating went down from a 4.7 to a 4.0. As I read the reviews it was apparent that the devs of the app abandoned development and the last update was over 10 months ago. All the reviews were begging for updates. Some reviews were for people that paid for the app and the features that were supposed to be in the paid app were removed....but people were still buying.

So I contacted the developers. I got an answer and they said they are no longer developing it. I offered to buy the app as is and then never heard back. I sent two more follow ups and still didnt hear anything. So thats when I said screw it, I'll develop my own app and include all the things I wish the app had but didnt.

I signed up over at upwork.com. I normally use guru.com but went with upwork. Posted my job and narrowed it down to three developers. Budget was of a concern as all the quotes were coming in in the 220-280 hour range to develop it from scratch. I started a contract on August 24th.

We've finished the design phase and are now onto the database development and static build. So far things have been going pretty smooth with a few hitches along the way but nothing major.

I will try to keep this thread updated as I go along. Sorry if I'm a little vague about the app itself but I dont want to disclose much about it until im ready to release it.

logo and app icon were finished today. I'm expecting the first apk at some point today. Not sure how much will be included in this first version but it will sure be cool to run my own app for the first time on my phone.

Been doing some thinking about iOS. The main feature of my app isnt supported in iOS unless the phone is jailbroken. But I dont want to cut the connection of my android app users from their friends with iOS.

I could release a very scaled back version on iOS and the full version for jailbroken phones. Not sure what I want to do just yet.

The monetization of the app will be similar to whatsapp, free for a period of time (prob 6 months) then $1 a year after that. I've tried to figure out a way to incorporate in app purchases and have an idea for something but it would be way down the line.

Got the first apk file from the dev about five days ago. Little hiccup as the screenshots are different from what was given in the apk. But at least i got to see my vision on my phone as a file.

Good luck, sounds like a cool project. Shame you can't give any details about the app itself - even the general genre? Is it in similar field to whatsapp? Do you have a date of intended release?
Arent you worried about it not working (well) on iOS?

It's similar to WhatsApp yes but will have a few added features that arent in WhatsApp. I plan on releasing Oct 31st. My dev has run into a few problems which has delayed things but im confident we can meet that deadline. As far as iOS, I'm not developing it yet. If and when I do, I will do it one of three ways. A dumbed down version because of the limitations in iOS; a version for jailbroken phones only; or do both of them. I dont want to ignore iOS for obvious reasons but for now getting a following on Android is the first goal. From there I will tackle iOS.I'm still going back and forth with how to monetize. I hate ads and refuse to use them. As an app user I never liked ads so I want to stick to that mentality. I will probably go with either a basic free version with less features and a paid version with everything unlocked. I have also thought of trying what WhatsApp did and have it be free for 6 months or a year then charge 99 cents per year. I would love to hear some others experience with this

so i've reached the half way point. I wanted to launch on October 31, 2015 and it might happen. Although I still have a lot to do after the app is completed, such as app video, build a way better website, plan a marketing strategy, etc.

I also need to figure out a way to beta test. I'm very unfamiliar with it and what the risks are of using complete strangers to test.

If you dont know how to make a video and make a website, Id be willing to do it for you and you could pay me after the app is on the market.

well i could make the website myself but my skills probably wont match what I want. Let alone that I dont even know what I want to begin with.

The video i'm at a total loss and was going to use a guy from fiverr

This is awesome. I have an app idea but have no idea where to even start so I'll be rooting for you.

Cool journey man. I also wanted to create a chat app with some specific features. How much are you in for it now if you don't mind sharing? What are projected total cost like. I was going to see what a base app from chupamobile would cost to get modded for the features i wanted, but got busy with other stuff.

Just building the app will probably cost me in the mid 2k. This is a built from scratch app so the costs are higher. Also the amount of features going into the app drove up the cost due to the hours to develop.

Some features are message sending via SMS and wifi, ability to send all file types of any size, dual sim support, delayed sending, scheduled sending, and theres a ton more.

I also need to figure out marketing, website, video, ASO, etc. Also I'm only developing in Android at the moment. iOS will come soon, but will be seriously limited by the os. But since android users talk to apple users, its the first thing I'm going to do as soon as the funds are raised. Hopefully from app sales.

thanks for the good vibes guys. As soon as I have the app done and in the store I'll let you know. Kinda want to keep it under wraps until then.

I'll gladly answer any questions. Also in the next few weeks it should get more interesting in regards to hosting and backend stuff
