Good luck with the journey. I like your drive and the fact you are willing to start building a few sites for free. Obviously thats not a good strategy for the long-term but thats the sort of mindset that will help you drive your way into your target audience without fail. Once you get a few happy customers promoting your company then the work will definitely roll in. My only advise on that front is make sure that you treat them like paying customers in terms of workflow etc and then invoice them as you normally would, but add the 100% Discount.

That way they are going to be promoting the service they actually received (As well as the true price tag that should go with it). Otherwise you might end up with everyone looking for freebies.

Quick update: just received 2 more replies and responded. One of them was from the guy who already got a free project with me. Looks like he wants one for his friend too. I'll try to charge since it's a referral.

I can't share the exact email I use but as long as you keep it friendly-casual non-spammy and don't try to trick them with clever subjects while offering some sort of value, you should be fine.

Search the forum for cold templates, some are good. Also see this thread it's pretty solid: https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/m...mbs-through-cold-emails-by-bloodyninja.917339

Yesterday I stayed up late to finish the first website. I tried to reject the free work for the referral (first client wanted one more free site for his friend, urgently) since it seemed like freebie hunting.

Long story short I ended up in a skyp call with his friend showing him the old vs new site (still unfinished at that time) and building up value. Told him it's worth $1000 and since I don't have any more free slots I can offer him a discount ($500). He negotiated to $300 on the condition that he sends the funds upfront, also I have to finish by Monday.

I'll also send him an invoice of $1000 with 70% discount like @davids355 suggested.

I'm pretty satisfied even if it's a small amount, but it's the first money this year and based on my plan it was supposed to come in February not January.

I'll be looking just for paid work from now on. If the other 2 people who replied pursue me I'll try to close a paid deal.

SUMMARY for the last 4 days:
    - Contacted 60 businesses and got 4 interested and closed 2.
    - Built 1 free website.
    - Got first paid client.
    - Finished most of my website.
    Money Spent: $0
    Money Gained: $300

    Pretty awesome dude
$300 in just first try isn't really bad. There are still people struggling for half of that money. Keep doing your thing.

Ok, I just finished the 2nd site (1 pager) similar to the first. He still haven't sent me hosting credentials to upload though, but at least he knows I delivered a bit faster and hopefully score referrals in the future.

First guy contacted me and said he'll send me a list of revisions tomorrow, hope it's minor stuff. I offered 3 small revisions with the free service and any extra revisions or major change will be charged for an hourly rate.

Next step is to use these 2 sites as examples for new customers from the same niche.

Sure, drop me a pm sometime.

I was browsing the forum for additional information and found some useful threads similar to my journey. Anyone who is on a similar path should benefit from reading these threads.

    1. This guy is a beast! He made 15k in one month of amazing execution. He can build 1-2 sites per day and attacked the local market with relentless hustle: https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/shit-this-method-is-working-for-me.732486

    2. This one is very similar to my journey in terms of how he plans to do it. I'll try YP, sounds ok. Too bad he didn't update his journey in a while but you can still get some insights reading the posts: https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/journey-5000-a-month-with-web-design.1069301

    3. This is a pretty funny template to cold call ugly sites. And renting the site is an interesting idea: https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/cold-calling-webdesign-sales-questions.731619/#post-7545069

Funny thing, the guy who paid didn't ask for revisions at all and the free one required all 3 revisions. I'm still in conversation with him for the final revision.

In the meantime I started scraping for a new email list based on the current niche. Since this time I will offer paid services, not free, the conversions will be significantly lower. From my previous experience with lower ticket sales via email, anything over 0.1% conversion is decent (1% is amazing).

I'll also test other methods even if I love cold emailing, actually I plan to test a new method of getting clients each day. Today, aside from cold emailing, I will test the twitter search method, which is extremely competitive, which gives me a rush. I'll get back with results later.

Ok, while building a new cold email list I tried the twitter method. Which is intense.

So basically with this method you type a search phrase like "web design" or "web designer", you filter by recent posts, remove links, add a question mark, cause if they asking a question they might have a problem to solve and then you look for leads in the results, usually tweets such as: "anyone knows web design?" or "looking for web designer".

So for 2 hours I ran 3 different tabs with various phrases. Best part is the results are updating live, so as soon as someone matches your phrase you get new result instantly. The crazy part is that others are doing this too, so in 2 minutes someone already had 3 replies from various web designers (that's just the tweets, who knows how many dm's).

Results in 2 hours with twitter:
    - Messaged 3 people and sent 1 email (waiting for replies).
    - Talked to one of them over DM but he's not willing to spend much.

Even if no replies, this looks promising, it could be either outsourced or automated. Needs more testing, maybe it's not even worth it with so much competition, who knows?

Today I got a new order $300 for a 1 pager. It was a referral from the guy who paid me $300 in the first place. I guess I'll need to pull a 1k client to get 1k referrals.

I'm also in talks with someone on twitter. Good chances to close a deal opposed to other conversations I had today.

I haven't tried a new method to get leads today, been busy enough with twitter, mailing and finishing my website, which I'm glad I finally finished.

Also got a few replies from cold emailing, nothing solid yet, but not too bad either.

Just a pro tip. Instead of setting goals for numbers that are out of your control like money per month... set goals for things in your immediate control
Examples of things in your control would be: Send 200 emails a day, Train a VA to do outreach, make 20 phone calls a day (scaling your marketing techniques)
Examples of things out of your control: Set 20 meetings next month, make 5k next month, land 4 clients next month, ect.

Because I'm building my own business and I need an initial portfolio to pitch others in similar niche. Had I simply freelanced, I wouldn't have the freedom to scale nor set the pricing myself. Need to build this from the ground up.

I'm familiar with this. Actionable goals you set for yourself, but for the thread, a sum of money is more relatable.

It's been a week since I started this journey. Here's a quick summary:

    1. Contacted roughly 250 people (60 of them I offered free work).
    2. Built 3 websites (1 for me, 2 for the customers) and 1 in the making.
    3. Earned $600 (which was referred from the free work exclusively).
    4. Got 2 hot leads in the pipeline with chances of converting for higher price than before (one from twitter and one from cold emailing).
