    --About Me--

Hello BHW! Been a long time lurker, even with an account, but decided that today is the day I will officially tell everyone my plan so that I can be held accountable to my goals. I am an 18year old high school student working a minimum wage job. My parents always have instilled goal-setting and dreaming as very large parts of my life, and I do not plan on working for someone when I am older (atleast not for a long period of time..) Next year I will attend Clemson University to study computer engineering, which many try to tell me that it's a good field with high paying jobs, but I do not really see myself doing it. I have a dream of being financially free with multiple streams of recurring income. I believe that many on this site have the same vision, as I have read through different journey threads. I have the drive, have the time, and have different skills associated with what I plan on doing, so I feel that success will come if I try hard enough and put in enough work. I am really unfamiliar with the whole SEO part of what I plan on doing, but I will keep reading and learning from threads on this great forum. Thank you for those that have read this intro and plan on following the thread!

    --Why Apps? Why Apple?--

Let me first say that I hate iPhones. I love the android ecosystem and openness. Even though android phones make up 80% of smartphones world wide... the Apple App Store still brings in more money than the Google Play Store. Look at an article today on PhoneArena. The app store users spend way more. It is no secret that the Flappy bird guy was making an estimated 50k a day from that game. With ad revenue. Mobile apps have this quality about them that if one hits.. it spreads like wild fire and has everyone around the world playing it. Even if only a certain geographic area plays the game. If it is popular.. downloads ~ cash. I wont put an equals sign there, because it's not necessarily true, but ad placement and in app purchases can generate so much money. This journey is all about making money, and since I can code and am interested in graphics, apps are a good fit for me.

    --The Plan--

Well the plan is similar to making a video go viral. You create good content, promote the video, hope it catches on. If it doesn't, you could try another video, that will drive traffic to your other videos, you're making money. I plan on creating quality games and promoting them on game forums, youtube, and through word of mouth in person all by whitehat means. Now additionally I am going to pay reviewers and try to pay for a YT account to promote/test it. In person I know around 20 or so good friends who will download the app, review it, and spread the word about it (aka challenge their other friends.. beat my high score etc. , tweet about it) so some high quality reviews will be nice. All of this sounds great and easy but you all are probably wondering how I will make the apps.
I'm not hiring anyone to create or using templates. I took two coding classes with java and a whole year long class strictly dealing with xcode. I am familiar with coding, but I want to let everyone in on a big secret. IT'S NOT HARD. Coding is hard. Creating a game? SIMPLE. I want you to stop reading this thread and google the word 'Gamesalad'. It is a means of making a game with no coding. Anyone can do it. I am currently in the process of making two games using this game creator. So far I have spent 600$ (craigslist rules) on a 2012 macbook pro, and that is my only expense. I plan on spending 100$ on the apple developer account and 300$ on the gamesalad pro account, but for right now I am 600$ in.

This post may be jumbled up but I hope it makes sense.
TL;DR: I am developing apps on a macbook I just bought. I have some coding expertise and plan on making some money.

    EXPENSES: 600

    REVENUE: 0

    PROFIT: -600

Interested to see how this works out for you on the app store. How would you be monetizing? Charging for the games/Advertising/In app purchase?

I knew I would forget to outline stuff in the first post lol. On my first game I plan on releasing, there will be ads on the home screen, the pause screen, and at the end when you die, but not during gameplay. I also will have in app purchases to remove adds, and depending on the game, for power ups and such. I won't be charging for any apps because honestly I feel that since I probably will never pay for an app that free games are more appealing.
The adds of course will be banners and buttons to transition between scenes, like 'play again' or 'home' will be close to the add and hopefully the ads will get clicked on a bunch.

Good luck on your journey! Bookmarked it.
I made 1000$ in a few months with PPD, but I don't want to continue it.
Now I want to get into the app market. So keep me updated!

Interesting thread, OP. Good luck with your journey. And btw, could you answer some of my questions?
Q1: Will you use adsense for ads in your apps?
Q2: Is it mandatory to use a Mac for developing apps for Iphone? Or I could use my old windows?
    Thank you in advance.
    Best regards,
    kyokid

Nice to see a app developing journey.
I am kind of afraid of appstore, as they manually review every app people gets pissed if their app doesn't get approved, so you really need to make a good one to get through the approval process.

It's quite a hassle to make iPhone apps on Windows. Not worth the fight.

Well if I can make a splash in the app market then anyone can! So I hope any progress I make can motivate you!

As far as 'developing' like just the coding aspects, there are ways to write code for an iphone app on a windows machine. For example, the program I mentioned above, GameSalad, has a windows version. The program converts the code of your game to an app suitable for android, ios, or windows. You DO need an Apple developer ID, and a system running OS X (apple machine or hackintosh) to actually upload the app and publish that app to the Apple App Store. So eventually you will need something running OS X.

As far as ads, GameSalad's ad implementation uses Apple's iADs. It's their ad network. I'm experienced in coding, but this will actually be my first app to be uploaded on the market, so I'm not sure which ad network is best or which work etc. It'll be a new experience for me to actually have an app on the appstore. So I plan on using iAds, but things could change and I could end up just making an app in Xcode. Different projects need different tools so you never know what I could get into, but as of right now I plan on implementing iAds using Gamesalad.

    Thanks for the good luck!

I plan on doing all original work and making the designs clean and simple so hopefully no rejection! Unless they read the fact that I'm an android user lol.

I hope to keep thread updated and answer all questions. I'm about to dedicate some hours into continuing my first game project! Thanks for all the comments

You don't need to learn code to be releasing Apps on the AppStore. Buy a source code, reskin it and submit it. You think every Flappy Bird clone out there is coded by its developer?

Thanks everyone! and yeah IMpossible like abradabra said you don't necessarily know how to code. There are code templates all over. Some for free.. some not. Youtube also has a lot of step by step tutorials.. then if you learn a tiny bit you can modify things to make your own game.

    I have another question, OP.
What do you think about apps for windows phones? I heard Microsoft pays a lot for an app with potential to atract many developers towards WINDOWS OS. ;)

I know some code (javascript, vb.net) , but not java and xcode. If I don't know those language, can I still make a game.

Although i can't answer this with 100% certainty, my answer is Yes, you could make an app. There are thousands of resources out there that let developers code in different languages then convert it to a format for the different devices. I'm sure if you browse the web such as searching 'Javascript mobile app' some kind of program will come up that lets you create apps using languages you know. I am not 100% sure how compatible it may be, but it's worth a try to look. Let me know what you find!
