[Journey] Scaling an Authority website to 10K a month (and beyond)

Here you go mate. enjoy!
img404.jpg
Thank you! :)

I don't get it, my sites always perform terrible with ezoic, without ezoic and adsense ads I have perfect score on google page speed insights

btw: Would you be worried if you have lost 10% of traffic from google since march 15 and the traffic is still the same, just 10% less since then?

This is a classic example of the problem Ezoic has, when compared to other ad networks/ ad management companies.
They actually have more options than any other major company competing with them, but the platform is so complex and settings often hard to understand, that most people get it wrong and they core web vitals suffer with Ezoic.

I remember I had to play with it quite a bit, and this also includes "playing" with plugins on your website Ezoic may interfere with, making sure your Cloudflare settings are right for Ezoic Leap, etc.

On the other hand, with companies like Mediavine or Adthrive you can have their tech rep set everything up for you, in the optimal way.

But trust me that IF you set things properly on all ends, Ezoic will actually help you with Page Speed Insights scores!

To your other question: I would not be too worried if you have great content, EEAT, and at least decent user experience. Losing 10% isn't a big thing in a Google update. However, it can sometimes be a signal that something's not right with your website, and you should address it, to avoid bigger impact in the next update :)

Thanks, I will do that. Are the settings from ezoic leap changed instantly or I have to wait to retest my site? Also I am imusing their dns servers, is that a mistake?

I think it is better clearing your caches (you can do it through Ezoic dashboard).

When it comes to their name servers I cannot comment on that, because I have never used that option. I've always used Cloudflare integration. Remember that many people here on BHW reported a lot of problems when using Ezoic DNS, but maybe things have improved since...

Hi @Kikerinka do you recommend enabling these options or I should just ignore it?
Thanks

To be honest, in the current climate and how websites with ads (and too many ads especially) fare in the latest updates, I would not enable any of those options...

Sure, you may earn a bit less, but better earning 80% of max RPM with 100% of traffic than earning 100% of max RPM with 50% of traffic (after another hit) :).

Mini update, March 2023.
adthrive_march_2023.png

- The latest Google core update (15th May) really played in our favor. For years I am not tracking the ranking for keywords/articles, and cannot make exact comparisons. However, based on traffic growth and manual checks of SEPRs, I'd say we recovered the losses from both December 2022 update (minor impact on our traffic) and February 3rd 2023 update (the biggest negative impact on traffic we had in years).

- The traffic still isn't the same as it was at the end of March 2022, but that were crazy times and the month when we approached 1 million page views (highest traffic ever), and were basically ruling the SERPs for almost all categories of topics I write content for...

So even if the last 2 weeks (after the update) we're 15%-20% down compared to the same period in 2022, I cannot really complain, especially considering everything that's going on, with so many people creating sites with AI, exposure of my website all over the internet, many people with existing sites in my niche copying KWs from us, one of the biggest websites on the internet (traffic-wise) pushing content massively in my niche in last 12 months, situation in the economy, etc.

- Surprisingly digital product sales also grew somehow towards the end of the month, and we even had some $100+/day from digital product sales, which has not happened in a while. This is probably because we improved in SERPs for some articles that historically generated decent product sales volume, and more visits to them logically resulted to more sales.

- Towards the end of the month traffic dropped a bit. This is mostly to the holidays in India, and Easter next week, end of Q1, etc. But I also realized that I forgot to actualize some titles for articles belonging to certain category on my website, articles that improved a lot in this core update. But since the titles were not as actual as they should be, I think we didn't get the best CTR, and Google pushed them slightly down.

CTR is a huge ranking factor, and if your article ranking no. 2 gets less clicks than article ranking no. 3 and no. 4, sure enough Google will push them below these posts, or at least will start mixing them up more. Anyway, I actualized the titles yesterday, so the problem should not continue. Make sure you do not make the same mistake :).

- Those of you who follow this journey know that I've done a lot after the latest update, to improve my EEAT, and make the website look more like a real business, instead of a blog.

At the end of the day, I cannot say if this played the major role when it comes to the recovery, or if it would have happened anyway. But I am still happy about the changes I made, and feel more secure now when it comes to future updates. Also the changes improved user experience somehow, and for me user experience and satisfaction is the most important thing...

That's it for today's update guys. I hope the Google core update treated you well, and if not, try to take it as an opportunity to improve your sites. As always, any questions do not hesitate to ask :)

I was certain of your recovery even if it wasn't caused by the EEAT changes.
Thank you mate, you've been always very supportive to me! I also knew it would eventually recover, at least partially, but had no idea when and to what extent. But here we are...

By the way, I am looking forward to your update :).

good stuff mate! so would you consider selling the site? or just try to keep growing it?

Thanks, neither the first, nor the second. I actually try to keep the website at a certain earnings level with minimum work, which means 4 new posts/month.

It is a long term test if the "almost passive" income model from authority websites can work in a long run.

Of course, if something extraordinary happens, like the negative impact of the 3rd February 2023 Google update, I come back and work more intensively on the website....

BTW, something rings the bell with your expression style. Haven't you had another account here before? :)

Good stuff mate :)

Can't believe with 4 posts a month you can keep up the earnings, but that shows your work is great :)

I think you might be referring to my old username @BitcoinsTechnology which I recently got it changed to @DrBitcoin as i didnt like that BitcoinsTechnology looked in 2 lines :(

Congrats @Kikerinka glad you've recovered your rankings. What's your plan now moving forward? Do you intend to publish more articles, update old articles etc?
Regarding my site, I decided to ditch Ezoic for SHE Media. Heard it is much much better and my site is now looking so much better.

Yes, the confusion can be a reason of the change of your username, in any case, good luck to you here on BHW!

Thank you mate, I've answered your question just yesterday :D. https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/j...-10k-a-month-and-beyond.1230972/post-16267907

I have never heard about SHE media before, but have checked their corporate website now. Seems like a network for female publishers, but since you have a nice a about section now they seem to believe you're really the woman behind this :).

BTW, when I open your website now, it looks really nice, but that's because I see no ads whatsoever. Not sure if you're still just setting up things with the network, or if there is some error?

Anyway, it would be nice if you can update us here down the road on RPMs when compared to Ezoic, since more members may be interested in making the switch.

Hello Kikerinka and thank you for the new update this month.
Your site traffic as well as revenues are back on the rise, which is good news.
Regarding the test of the quasi-passive model, why don't you make your editor work a little harder?

On my side, I'm back to writing articles after a month of break. I have installed themonetizer as my first ad network but the income is disappointing 0,5€ per day.
It was supposed to boost me and it killed my motivation.

Adsense didn't accept my site, but I didn't work well on the legal mentions and the cookies banner among others. At least I think that's it

I'll let the current system run for another month and I'll try again to place adsense to compare.

I will open a dedicated thread later this month

Yeah I didn't know about it either. Saw it mentioned in the Fat Stacks community and people claimed that it is much much better. So decided to give it a try.

Yes they claimed they a network of female publishers and I don't know whether they only accept female publishers but looks like they also have male publishers too.

Though I don't know whether it's my about page that made them accepted me but I don't remember selecting my gender while applying.
BTW, when I open your website now, it looks really nice, but that's because I see no ads whatsoever. Not sure if you're still just setting up things with the network, or if there is some error?
They submitted the site to be evaluated by Google for MCM Part Two that's why the ads were not showing.

The reason I saw ads before was that I was still running Adsense but looks like the evaluation is done and the ads have started showing.

Anyway, it would be nice if you can update us here down the road on RPMs when compared to Ezoic, since more members may be interested in making the switch.
Yeah I will try and update here so that we can see if it performs better than Ezoic or not.

Thank you for coming back Bruce, and looking forward to your journey thread here!
When it comes to your suggestion, I cannot follow it because I do not have an editor. At the moment, in this project I am the writer, the editor, the manager, the owner, the cleaning lady, everything :D.

Sorry to hear that you lost the motivation. But you can always look at things from different perspectives. I remember when I was starting with this website, and made like $11.74 from Adsense in August 2011. I told about it to a few friends from business. Most of them were laughing and told me I should focus on my offline business, where I was making thousands back then and not peanuts. They said I should forget this internet thing altogether...

But one guy, who was somehow into internet marketing in my country (working in local language, combination of online and offline method), told me something interesting that I remember till today. He said: "When you have learned how to make 1$/day passively, you can just scale it and make $100/day passively."

Of course, what he said was very simplified, and many things change once you try to scale some idea, and sometimes there isn't even room for scaling... But he motivated me back then, because he saw things in a different light than the rest of the people I told about my $11/month.

Others saw just the number, but he saw the potential behind it. He saw the bigger picture...

Anyway, Privacy Policy, Cookie policy, etc is a must if you want to get accepted to Adesne. Do it correctly and reapply, and if they reject you reapply again. Eventually they will accept you.

In any case, good luck to you and I hope you get your motivation back! Having a passion for your project is the key here!

Yeah I will try and update here so that we can see if it performs better than Ezoic or not.
I can see the ads now! Overall the layout is better and the website looks less spammy, but still certain things look rather amateurish--such as the sidebar ad overlapping with the footer ad, meaning that one ad covers partially the other one and readers cannot see it properly :). This isn't a good practice, and you should address it (or they should do it on their end, if they set things up for you).

And when it comes to female publishers, that's not a bad thing. Maybe you can travel to one of their publishers meetups and find yourself some nice lady with a cooking or parenting website making $10K/month :D

Hello Kikerinka and thank you once again for this intravenous injection of motivation

I had suggested you to employ an editor because at the time of memory you were working with one that you thought was good.

As for me I'm getting back into it and I'm aware of how far we have to go so we're hanging in there.

Everything was setup automatically but I look into it and rectify any issue.

Haha that's a good idea. When I'm going, I'll tell them that I'll invite my boss and we'll go together so that you'll also find a lady making $100k/month :p

I've checked now, and the issue is still there. Also the ads load quite slowly, not sure if this is something they can impact on their side of things, or it has more to do with your side of things, or even mine, like slow connection :).

And to your invitation. Well, you can find quite a lot of information about this SHE Media network and the websites there, like you can about any other network ;). And there isn't any lady with a website making $100K/month on this network ;). But there are quite a few who break the $10K/month mark, so maybe worth going to the meeting. But I will likely not stand it, since in my experience on occasions where too many women meet it's just unbearable to me to stand the talks and the overall vibe :D.
