[Journey] Scaling an Authority website to 10K a month (and beyond)

Thank you mate, I can definitely see this trend in more niches. Then real question is though whether the changes I am making will be enough for Google to place me into the 2nd category :).
Worth trying it I guess. No one can tell something for sure.

BTW, when it comes to your website, have you done anything to keep this "business image"? For example keeping some social profiles, content related to their services on your site, etc? Or do you think you simply benefit from the fact that it was a business, and is perhaps still listed in some directories online, LinkedIn, and so on?
It is still listed on some directories. Thing is that the business is still continuing and it is a famous brand. Their Youtube channel has a couple of million views. They own it BTW but my website link is still there :)

They even tried buying my website 1 year ago but the offer wasn't so generous :p

Sometimes I even receive emails from clients because the brand is somehow famous. I forward all emails to them. We have a good relationship.

When it comes to connecting, we do not need to connect outside of this platform. Any questions you have, any ideas you want to discuss, just send me a DM here.

Thank you, and good luck with your journey, which I definitely follow, and hope for an update soon

Thank you

@Kikerinka - Have you considered an option to make your digital product more prominent, plus add a real/fake U.S. company name and address? Another possibility would be to add an option to order individual coaching lessons for let's say 500-1000/hour on the front page. Nobody would buy them and you can continue to focus on your blog. For more credibility, you could add video testimonials (order them on Fiverr or somewhere else).

This way you could pretend to be a site that sells online courses/e-books and writes a blog as a hobby. Many huge companies do manage to attract a lot of customers with their blogs. You could pretend to be one of those sites.

Because of well known events that happened here on BHW last fall, I will not explain all changes I made, and all things I am working on. But I will point out some, because perhaps it can help someone else from you guys who got hit in one of the recent updates. So these are some of the things I've done or are still working on:
  • I purchased a toll free US number, and added it to a visible part on the website, as well as to the contact page. Of course, considering that we have visitors from all around the world and what not, I do not want this phone to work all the time, and someone waking me from sleep... So what I did is that I left just a very short window each day for a call, and send all other calls to a voicemail. There's a nice introduction (just as real businesses have when not available), and I got all messages (including the number they called from) to my mailbox. Hence I can call or write back if necessary.
  • I started working on my YT channel again, this time using Doodly, and scheduling videos (at first 2/week, later 1/week). My system isn't perfect and the videos aren't top-notch, but sometimes when I feel creative I come up with a good one. Again, the goal isn't to get lots of traffic from YT, or get more subscribers or whatever. The goal is to simply have an active channel on some "social platform", because that's what real businesses do. For my niche and content YT is the best platform, that's why I opted for it. Again, I also added link to the channel to a visible place on each page, to contacts, etc. I post videos on articles from certain category I had mixed success with on the website, so let's see how they perform on YT, and whether it will help the website in any way.
  • Lot of changes have been made, and some new content added, when it comes to pages related to EEAT. Think About, Contact, Disclaimer, Authors, etc.
  • I work heavily on interlinking, getting back to oldest pages on the website, and doing everything manually. The truth is that over the last years (and especially during the first year of this journey), I added a lot of content in different categories, and there are now many opportunities for meaningful interlinking, that should not only be meaningful for the visitor, but also hopefully help Google to understand the connection of various topic on my site, and basically boost the mysterious "topical authority".
  • Few other changes I won't elaborate on, due to the reasons I mentioned before.

I plan to continue working on these things until mid March, when the core of the work should be done. From then on I will return to work on other projects & ventures, and hope for the best from the next Google Core update :).

So that's it for today guys, I hoped to bring you better news, but as always I am honest and say things as they are with the website. Good luck to everyone, and any questions/suggestions, do not hesitate to ask!

Thanks so much for the latest update @Kikerinka I am sure many of us have benefitted from your generous sharing for the past 3 years. I am also a bit sad to see that your income has dropped a bit and wish that the trend reverses and you hit new highs in the near future.

Wow, either you made a really good business decision when getting this domain, foreseeing the future, or you were super lucky :).
In any case, considering the current trends, it is a very fortunate situation for you, and I hope you will grow this domain a lot and make a best out of it! Congrats!

Hey mate, this is a very solid advice. To be honest, I feel the digital product is quite prominent already. I am promoting it in about 400 pages on the website. Also link to it is on the main menu, visible on every single page.

The individual coaching is an interesting option. Most likely nobody will order it for such a price, and if they do, I may sacrifice a bit of my time and coach for $500/hour :D.
In any case, now after reading your message I consider changing a bit the homepage and overall navigation on the website, to make it look like the products (50+ digital products and the coaching) are the core of the business, and the articles are just "the blog". Will think about how I can do it, in a meaningful way.

The only NO for me are the video testimonials. I just hate how everything is filled with fake reviews and testimonials, or testimonials from people who got a free copy, so it is obvious what kind of review they will write. It's just the same on BHW to be honest (there are some exceptions, but they just prove the rule)... As I said before, I try to stick to some values and principles while running this website, or anything else for that matter :). But I think it can add some credibility even without the testimonials.

Thanks again, and I hope you're websites are doing great!

Thank you mate, glad to see you around again :). To be honest it hasn't dropped a bit, it has dropped a LOT :). But here we are, no point in crying about the situation. I accept it as it is now, and try my best to make sure the next update gives us the traffic back...

I think your site will recover, the last few months google sent to Valhalla a lot of sites including a lot of good and legit ones. At least you're not this guy: :)

I still need to read more of this because it's so long.

But it's interesting you are able to write so many articles in one day. And those articles rank. Usually if it's fairly easy to write for then it's more likely to be saturated and harder to rank for. And if it's harder to write for then the volume you're putting out wouldn't be sustainable/possible.

Have you mentioned the general niche in this thread? Like is this something like Health or is it some niched down activity? Well, in any case, how are you handling E-A-T-T? Or is that even an issue for you? Google is tightening things down progressively more and more favoring corporate brands, so it makes this journey all the more impressive.

I've started a similar journey as a side project. I can probably pump out the same amount of articles as you can per day, but the competition is likely to be the issue preventing them from ranking. So it would fall into the category of easy to write for but more saturated. And, well, it certainly is saturated to some degree given it's the niche about making websites niche.

Wow, either you made a really good business decision when getting this domain, foreseeing the future, or you were super lucky :).

Im picky when choosing domains but I can't say I forsee the future lol
Luck is also an important part of life, isn't it? ;)

Thank you, yes, it has been a madness lately :). Google tries hard to fight the AI, and mistakes do happen along the way. Let's see if they eventually figure it out, or not.

The chart is brutal, but I believe it could not be completely white hat website, or perhaps it got 90% of traffic from few articles only and those got his. Do you know the guy, or the niche?

follow post
Thx mate

Well, I haven't shared the niche, but few months ago I had a guy bl4ckm4iling me, and revealing the website here and on other places online. So basically I feel almost everyone knows my niche now. Maybe you are the only one online who doesn't :D.

Jokes aside, it is a serious niche, some people would maybe categorize it YMYL, but I'd say it is borderline YMYL. Most articles aren't technical in nature, but that doesn't mean that anyone can write them quickly, or without research, or can post actually something meaningful that a target group will enjoy reading, and will benefit from. I have a lot of experience in the niche, and also a lot of experience with writing, so most of the time the words come easy...

Another point from your post: favoring corporate brands. This happened in my niche too (perhaps you haven't checked my latest updates), and I try to make the website look more like a serious business now. Lost about 35% of traffic in February 3rd 2023 unconfirmed Google update, and, counting with a small hit in December 2022 & some developments in my niche (not related to updates), I am now down almost 50% compared to last year...

Let's see if the changes I am working on reverse the trend, I'll keep you and others posted.

And when it comes to saturation--in my opinion, something like a saturated niche doesn't really exist. It all comes to down to keyword research. In my niche there are hundreds of websites of all sizes and types. Yet sometimes I still find keywords/topics that bring in 3K+ visits monthly and have barely any competition... Of course, this comes down to experience with the niche and lot of data in GSC I can benefit from, but nevertheless it proves there's nothing like a saturated niche.

Yes, it is. A big part of life ;).

I took this pic from reddit, guy says the site was about game mods (or stock market, he didn't say exactly) and was operating for years before taking the hit. Here's his thread. Anyway, he's not alone and I also believe google will redo some changes cause there are too many graphs like these.

Hi Kikerinka
I just saw the February update, I don't know why BHW didn't send me an email!
Hard the fall of audience.
Silly question but do you have a lot of audience coming from social networks?
It would be interesting to develop this aspect too, less subject to the fluctuations of google

For my part I'm still working on my project
adsense refuse my site, low quality content, they are crazy! I'm going to work with another ad network and my traffic is still increasing for the moment.
for info I still have a lot of traffic from Discover !

Hey mate,
Thank you for updating me. The social traffic (YT, Facebook vKontakte, Pinterest, Instagram and some more combined) makes for about 0.2% of my total traffic :).

I think this is really niche dependent though. In my niche, there are a couple of websites getting loads of traffic from YouTube, but there isn't any website getting any significant number of visitors from any other social platform.

Sorry to hear about Adsense. I think you should try reapplying, this is very important down the road, because in order to get into premium ad networks you need to have Adsense approved...

BTW, maybe you can finally start your journey thread here? The blogging journeys section has been as dead as ever both here and on YT. Time to see some new faced around, so maybe it can be you :)

and the best of all, new Google update :)

https://developers.google.com/search/updates/ranking
never boring, never boring ;)
To be honest, I was waiting for this Core Update, considering the SERPs were the worst in years in my main niche, after all unconfirmed February updates. And I do not mean worse because I lost a lot of traffic, I mean worst in years for the final user.

And of course, I also did a lot of work in last 40 days, trying to make sure the next core update will play in my favor.
Just checked the Analytics:

gcum23.png

Obviously the update has just started, and it is early to celebrate. But maybe there is still some justice in this blogging world??? ;).

I also checked manually about 10 keywords in my niche, to see the new SERPs. The good news is that the few websites using AI (to a higher or lesser degree) that managed to get to top 10 for keywords in my niche in last 12 months, were all pushed down now.

As I said, too early to celebrate, but so far I like the impact of this core update. Hope for the best for all you guys who stayed with honest blogging and keep building quality websites!

I confirm a small boost for the normal competitor bloggers I have, as well as for me, which is nice. I was tired of losing keywords to all those automated AI blogs that had expired domains and no real research behind their content.

So far I love it!!
Checked the SERPs again now, for about 20 keywords. Websites that are using AI (including some that do so in a sophisticated way, meaning that 95 out of 100 people will not know it is an AI website, but of course for me it is easy to spot that it is AI) are pushed down even further.

For keywords in certain category I even outrank the DA 90+ website, the one I thought I would never outrank again. It is almost too good to be true.
Of course, the update isn't finished yet, but so far there's no reason to be pessimistic about this one!

Hi Kikerinka

Has your site ever been hit by a Google update? If yes, what did you do to recover.

My site has been growing well for the last year and was hit by the most recent update yesterday.

Rather disappointing as all my articles were hand written by me based on my experience in the niche with no AI at all.

Read up the last two pages at least. Although the whole post is very interesting. Short answer is that although Kike managed to avoid most of the algo updates, the one before this last one was pretty brutal so they already have taken some measures to counter this. So read up on what you can do to try to get your rankings back.

I was hit hard in Feb 3rd/4th unconfirmed update. Did a lot of work from then, read my monthly update for Feb 2023 for details.

Now in the major core update it seems I regained all traffic lost in both Feb 3rd update, and also the bit of it I lost in December 2022 update. The traffic still not the same as in October 2022 for example, but that's mostly because of the events in my niche and the fact that certain sub-niches simply lost 90% of usual search volume.

If you want, you can PM me your website and when I have a free hour I will look at it and give you my opinion on what could have caused the drop.
