@Anon9109 It is great to hear that you managed to achieve this without an expired domain. Could be that Reddit visitors helped a lot, as Google might see that as proof that your site is legit.

Anyways I wish you success in beating that "mega-blog". Even 1 million visitors would be a huge success.

That's an interesting point about reddit. I am linked within a wiki for a subreddit, it only brings me around 200 visitors per month although the subreddit has 20k members now. So traffic wise it isn't a lot, but perhaps the links still assist with significant credibility in google's eyes.

The mega-blog covers my niche and more, sort of like if this were a blog about cupcakes, they would be a blog about desserts. So they compete with me for certain keywords for sure, but they aren't (just) my niche. So, I don't think I'll ever beat them in traffic as they're just covering way more topics but it still excites me when an article of mine outranks them, because they are so big and well established. I believe their site has been around at least 10 years. :)

I haven't really been paying any attention to my backlinks at all seems how a core aspect of this blogging style is not building backlinks, and my traffic is doing fine without building backlinks intentionally. Today I checked out my backlink profile on ahrefs and while there's random junk links on there, I have had a few non-spam sites link to me. A couple were small blogs that I'm guessing aren't very successful, they were both sort of "diary" style blogs but clearly were real people/real blogs. Then I also got linked to by two brands who make products that are related to my niche. One is a UK company I had never heard of, they linked to me twice in different articles on their brand's blog. The best, was the other brand though because it was a brand that I know and have even purchased from before. So, seeing that they linked to me on their blog is pretty cool even though gaining backlinks isn't really a goal of mine.

What is your internal linking strategy like? You're getting a fantastic pages per session rate.

Edit: NVM, found the answer earlier in the thread. Great stuff btw!

Thanks :)
I realized this week I probably should work on making a menu bar to let people browse certain categories of content in an easier way. That's something I hope to do soon-ish and hope it might increase my pages per session a bit more.

June 2021 update (month 10)
Total sessions: 78,188 (up just shy of 2k)
Total pageviews: 124020 (up about 4k)
Total blog post count: 66 (4 new in June)

whcjune.png
Above is my overall traffic. Below is just my organic traffic. 73.5% of my traffic is from organic search. Exact same percentage as last month, oddly enough.

Here is my search console screenshot for june:
whcjunesearchconsole.png

Social stats:
I had 7,942 visitors from Pinterest, which is down about 1100 vs last month.
Reddit brought in 233 visits vs 234 last month.
Facebook brought in 646 vs 277 last month.

I haven't done anything different with Facebook. I just share a quick teaser and paste a link to each blog post. I haven't seen much engagement at all on my facebook statuses. So I assume the traffic increase came from someone else sharing a link to my blog post somewhere on Facebook.

Social media following stats:
Facebook fans: 133, up 46 this month.
Twitter followers: 23 (4 new this month)
Instagram followers: 141 (9 new this month)
Pinterest followers: 221 (46 new this month)
Email rss newsletter subscribers: 83 (19 new)

Income Results: I turned off monumetric ads on 6/2 around noon and adthrive turned my ads on that evening. So I was only without ads for like 5 hours or something. Much faster & smoother transition than it was moving from ezoic to monumetric.

56.45 monumetric
2,402.00 Adthrive
75.64 amazon affiliates
7.04 impact affliates
2.64 CJ affiliates
Total income: 2543.76

Goals for July: To publish 4 new posts. I started a 2nd niche blog and am excited about it, and will be trying to crank out content faster on that new blog for a while, but i don't want to neglect this blog. So I'm trying to hold myself to doing 4 posts a month for this blog moving forward.

I have started a new thread for my 2nd niche blog which is a pet blog, if you care to follow that journey as it unfolds, it's linked below.

July 2021 update (month 11)
Total sessions: 78,437 (up about 300)
Total pageviews: 125,742 (up about 1,700)
Total blog post count: 70 (4 new in July)

Very minor traffic increase vs last month...and honestly when you consider that this month was 1 day longer, I think the average daily traffic was slightly down vs June. That's a little bit of a bummer but I'll get into diagnosing that further down in this post.

whcjulyall.png
Above is my overall traffic. Below is just organic. 76.57% of my traffic is coming from organic search, up about 3% vs last month.
whcjulyorganic.png

Here is my search console screenshot for July...the total clicks, impressions, CTR and average position are all very similar to June's.

Social stats:
I had 6,428 visitors from Pinterest, which is down about 1500 vs June, and June was down about 1100 vs May. So, definitely losing Pinterest traffic.
Reddit brought in 216 vs 233 last month.
Facebook brought in 981 vs 646 last month, and that was up quite a lot vs May which was in the 200's. So definitely growing on Facebook.

Social media following stats:
Facebook fans: 125, down 8.
Twitter followers: 23 (no change)
Instagram followers: 147 (6 new this month)
Pinterest followers: 264 (43 new this month)
Email rss newsletter subscribers: 90 (7 new)

Income results:
$2,420 AdThrive
$89.42 Amazon affiliates
$7.49 impact affiliates
$85.00 Ratuke refer-a-friend
Total: 2,601.91. Up $58.15 vs June.

Thoughts on the plateau
I think the plateau I experienced with traffic and income both, has multiple causes. I'm definitely seeing less traffic from Pinterest and that seem to really be out of my hands. After I saw less pinterest traffic last month, I intentionally put more time into Pinterest this month, and it didn't help. Pinterest is always changing their algorithm and I assume it's somehow impacting some of my pins. I haven't done a deep-dive into it. I know that it's recommended that you make multiple graphics per blog post and pin new images only. I'm just not willing to make multiple graphics per blog. I do think Pinterest is really good compared to other social media platforms but it's not so good that I'm going to give it tons of time. I'm better off using my time to make new content for search instead.

I also did lose some ranks with the google updates in June or july...I think there have been 3 updates, I don't know which one got me as I Was't watching closely enough. I do know that there are three or four posts of mine that are lower in rank than they used to be. One of them had been about my 5th most popular post and so that one definitely reduced my traffic to that post. I also had some of my newer posts gain in their ranks though, so that mix sort of balanced out my google traffic so the numbers look pretty similar to last month.

Goals for August
I have to move this month but I still aim to get 4 new posts up for this blog.

How many articles did you create since the last update for this site? Do new articles already bring any traffic?

This update was just two days ago, I haven't created any new articles since then. Well, I have an article half-written but it's not published yet, so still 70.

I do have some people who follow me via email so my brand new blog posts do usually get some traffic pretty immediately (maybe 25 visits or so) but then it takes anywhere from maybe 3 days to a few weeks before my new posts usually start to see google traffic. It seems to me that it depends on how competitive the keyword is.
For example, I published a pretty low competition blog post on July 21st, and it's already ranking #5 on the google SERP for its main keyword.
However, back in late May I published an article for a really high competition keyword and it's not ranking on the front page for its main keyword, but it is getting google traffic because it is ranking in the top 5 for some of the secondary keywords that I used. I'm hoping it just needs more time to rank for its main keyword. I have witnessed that with similar posts to this in the past...that when I go for a high competition keyword it may not rank well for several months. Where lower competition ones I tend to rank well a lot sooner.

amazing thank you for th journey ,
how many total articles do you have on site
Thank you. I have 70 published blog posts at the moment, hoping to publish #71 tonight. I also have a table of contents type of page, and a page where I recommend products. These are linked in the menu bar on my blog and get regular visits so I'd consider them content despite them being pages, not posts. And I also have an about page, contact page and a privacy policy page but those aren't regular content of course.

Congratulations on the amazing job. Your rankings indicate that Google already views your site as an authority for your niche. You should try to write about more competitive terms now and reap the fruits after a few months.
When I asked about articles that are already ranking since the last update I meant those articles that are written since July 3.
Keep us updated in the future. It is nice to hear that your hard work is paying off.

Oh, I see. I have 5 blog posts published since july 3, but one was just published yesterday.
Of those 5:
#1 was published July 4th. It isn't ranking for its main keyword yet. It has one secondary keyword, it isn't ranking for that yet either.
#2 was published July 6th. It's ranking #8 for its main keyword. It has 6 secondary keywords. One is ranking #2, another is ranking #7. The remaining secondary keywords aren't ranking.
#3 was published July 12. It's raking #1 for its primary keyword. It has 4 secondary keywords. None of them are ranking.
#4 was published July 21. It's ranking #6 for its main keyword. It doesn't have any secondary keywords.
#5 was published 8/2. It isn't ranking for its main keyword. It has 2 secndary keywords, those aren't ranked either yet.

Great journey OP. If you turned your home page into an e-commerce store where you sell products, while keeping the blog SEO, do you think you could increase your profits?

pare you bothering even looking at search volume for these keywords or are you just finding keywords with google auto suggest and if it has little people targeting it, you write an article on the subject?

Thank you. I don't have any experience with e-commerce really, so I really have no idea if I would have any chance at being successful with that or not. I do recommend some products in my blog posts and get affiliate money from them. I know that people are selling products in response to my recommendations. So, that makes me think I probably could do more e-commerce? But being really authentic/genuine/natural is important to me. I don't want to recommend products to my readers unless I would also recommend them to a friend I had in real life. I don't like marketing or being a salesman, etc. So I just don't really think e-commerce would be for me.

I don't believe that the tools that estimate search volume are very accurate at all. When I look up the name of my niche on ahrefs it says the search volume for the niche is just 35,000 a month. One keyword that I considered to be high competition says it only gets 600 searches a month. I rank #2 for that keyword now, and that post got 6,400 pageviews last month. Anyway...my point being, the tools would tell me that basically all of the keywords I'm targeting are too small. I do have some posts where they really don't get much search volume, but most get plenty of searches.

When I first started this journey I was doing google auto-suggest to find keywords. Then I'd google the keyword and look at the top results, and try to roughly estimate how competitive that keyword was, based on the results. If it had forum results as the top response, or if the responses showing up weren't entirely on topic, I'd consider those to be very low competition. If ordinary blogs showed up, I'd consider that medium competition. If huge blogs or big brand websites showed up, I'd consider those high competition. For my first 20 blog posts or so, I only wrote low competition keywords. Then I started to do some medium competition, and later high competition. Once I started to rank well with some high competition posts I basically stopped caring about how competitive a keyword was. Once I knew I had a chance of winning high competition stuff, I just started writing about any of the keywords that I could make good content for.
