You guys may have seen Gob's thread recently about kindle books? yes? well it inspired me to give it a go.

First I have a few websites that I set up to give support to an event that I ran a while back, it was all fictional content about a mysterious and evil company with a research division that was doing genetic experiments on people. There were 4 sites in total and they all have about 30 articles on them.. give or take. This is not SEO stuff, all fictional content to support the story. I didn't research the niche as I had the content already.

So with that in mind I grabbed some stories written, but not published, and put them into a novella book. It's about 30K words in total.

I can photoshop, so i knocked up a nifty cover and made sure that I put the links into the first few pages. That's all fine and well but, now I have content what to do?

First I posted it to the Kindle store with the 5 days free promotion.

I created an author bio and posted a few bits of addition info about me there (I have used a fake pen name for this whole experiment).

With nothing but the promotion I go to #900 on the best sellers list and was ranking #3 in the category (this has since dropped to #7 in category and #1500 in the sellers list)

I have had in the last 3 days about 425 downloads of the book and it seems to have topped out there.

Now that the promo is falling, I started to do additional marketing on the author.

I created a new facebook page and also set up a facebook user account as well, my thinking is that I should start to get some sort of profile up for the author as people may search on google for the name...

I then got on fiver and purchased a few thousand friends for the author profile and a large number of likes for the page (just trying to create a sense of authority)

I have also purchased traffic to the Amazon page where the ebook is and a few hundred facebook shares of the URL.

There was a decent looking link wheel gig offered, so I decided to hit the Facebook page url with about 10 long tail keywords all around this niche.

I have only started the additional work on the profile stuff today so I am yet to see any change in anything but again, it's all about creating the illusion of some well known author.

Next, I have got onto Odesk and found 5 writers who are all working on 5-10,000 work novellas/novelletts that are all based in this fictional world. Some are going to take 4 weeks, some one. THey are all under the instruction to make the endings cliff hangers to they can keep writing editions. Just like a comic book never ends, this is the same in story form.

As they are submitted, I can keep posting them to amazon with links in the books to the other books.

That is the plan so far.

As things progress I'll update, as I have spent a little on this project so far, just in fiver and preparing to spend on odesk.

**The biggest fall back to this is that I cant get any reviews in this way, I have to wait till people actually read the book*** thats the biggest falling over point at the moment.

Since I started the additional push for creating the profile my downloads have started up again and it's sitting now at 625, so thats a little jump there and the position has moved back down to #1098.

I'm not sure what has caused it but I am sure that something is working. There is still a few days left on the free list, so I have submitted the URL to 20 free kindle book websites, and joined maybe a dozen facebook groups (I didn't join any that were under 1000 users) and promoted the url there as well.

Now, I'm going to be watching the rankings closely and when it comes off the free list I will update the sales.

One of my authors has got back to me with the first chapter of a romance novel that I will push (not sure if I will put it under the same pen name though)

Man I wish that I could get some stats, it would really help track what is working and what isnt.

Lastly, yes I could buy reviews however I have read nothing but bad things about doing that , so I think that I will just wait and see if I get naturally generated ones first, if I get nothing after the first few sales then I will look at other options.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you have to pay the writers at Odesk?

I'm writing my first eBook for Kindle but since I hate writing, I'm probably going to outsource the work...

good luck buddy! is it something that would appeal to teenage girls? take an inspirational quote from your book, add your pen name to it, and post it around everywhere and maybe you'll get a few more sales

    @jcms23 -
I am paying $30 for a 10-30K story and there are 5 of them (all different t elements of the story line)
I am paying $100 for a novel (the romance one) as that is going to be upwards of 70K words...

    @OrangeNRG -
Not a bad idea, maybe put it on an image and post that to facebook with the book url at the bottom? see if it gets shared around maybe?

    @Sneeks -
Thats right you dont get paid for the first 5 days (the amount of days, up to 5, is a choice) you can have it free for 1 day or up to 5.

The free days is to get your rankings up as high as possible, and those rankings apparently, stay the same when it goes from free to paid.

It's currently at 750 d/l's and it's position is #694 (I have also just hit the top 10 free download list in another category too which is nice)

It's all going to change the second it goes off free though I'm sure.

    WOOT!

    Just hit 1100 downloads!

It was featured on some of the free kindle download facebook pages which I think has done some stuff!

I have also just set up a subdomain on one of my sites, with a simple html book sale theme, and I'm going to buy some traffic to that page as well. (it's got a direct link to the kindle page)

It's the last day of the free promotion so I guess tomorrow will tell if it is going to actually sell anything. I had one review from a punter so hoping that more come in soon.

It's now ranking #503 in the kindle store and #1 and #50 in it's respective category pages.

P.M me if you want the URLS to the pages to see for yourself.

When it goes live I'm going to sell it for $5.99. I think that is a good price because it adds value to the purchase. EG: I believe in the product so I will charge a little more than others.

Yes you can sell it at the lowest price possible but, from a marketing perspective I think its a bad idea. If you don't believe in the value of the book, then why should anyone else?

That may well change though, after it goes from free to paid.

The book clicked over to paid a few hours ago, after topping out at 1200 downloads and so far.... no sales.

I still only have one review so that may play a part in it, but really I'm not sure.

The book is sitting at #447 in Kindle Store however I cant find it anywhere....

I have a feeling that I need to get more novellas out there that have links to the other books, that way as they sit on the free list, and people read them then they might be more inclined to buy the first one.

I have noticed that it is coming up in a general section on the first page for a fairly generic search term (the topic of the book) that is is a plus. It would be nice to see what people search for on amazon though.

So time will tell I guess. I'm pushing the writers to get me more content asap, so I can get it up and out there. I will also take the shorter stories that the book is made up from and publish them as 2.99 shorts as well, that might get the numbers up a bit...

Congrats on the success you had during the period when your ebook was free. If there won't be any sales in the first 2 days, I would start and play with the prices maybe see some changing. Also, see the number of pages/price of the ebooks from your category to make an idea where you are.

Also, I would take care about the quality when linking one book to another because if one of the books you outsourced won't be very good, will push the others down and not up as you wish.

Otherwise, good luck and keep us posted!

I have it for $5.99 at the moment as it's 30K words, 1000+ kindle pages = 30 Word doc pages, so it's a novella length.

I can always drop it if I get nothing yeah. I dont want to just dump it at 2.99 but hey, 1 sale at 2.99 is better than no sales at 5.99 hey?

    Questions:

Today is day one of my freebie period, it is just afternoon and I am at 60 downloads. Is that a good pace?

I inadvertently used my Pen Name to setup the Author Central Account. Am I stuck with that? In other words does each Pen name need its own email address? That will make it harder to keep up with.

Also, where are you getting all the ranking info? My author central page says I have to get sales to see rankings.

That's OK, nothing special. But you can get 300 downloads free of charge...if you don't sell anything this means that the book is not that good and you will probably need 30+ quality books to get some monthly income (approx. $400).

Regarding OP JOurney- You are totally inexpirienced. I saw you're jumping from joy with all those thousands of free downloads but I knew you will be dissapointed once you don't see sales. The thing is, you need a lot of books (of course if you're well known writer you need a ouple of books) to live out of KDP.

But don't stop here, imagine you have 100 books published and each book bring you $10/month...that's $1,000. It is all about the numbers. One book won't make you rich, hell it won't even buy you a pair of shoes.

$30 for a 10k-30K words story , that´s actually pretty low price I think. Outsourcers is tempted to write anything fast as possible to get 10k-30k words and they don't bother about quality.

I have been trying to get my outsourced writers to really take ownership of the stories that they are producing and it seems to work. It's a creative outlet and not 'How to SEO' stuff that seems to be the norm here.

On a side note I have made 1 sale and had the book borrowed twice! however Current Sales Rank: #81,585 in Kindle Store

    Still early days!
