Hello everyone. After reading the forums here, I wanted to share my journey as well. I want to hold myself accountable, and hopefully inspire others with what I accomplish. I appreciate any and all help and advice along the way. I apologize if this post is too long, but thank you so much if you take the time to read.

I am from the US, but a few years ago I took a contract in Europe which ultimately introduced me to the love of my life. Now 3 years later, Ive spent 1 month in the states and 35 months struggling my ass off in Europe. Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong.... I went from a decent US salary to working for a grand or less a month just to stay with my fiancee. Every day is stressful. We move countries every 90 days. This lifestyle and these daily challenges have pulled me off the right path completely. At the moment of writing this, we are both completely exhausted. This is hopefully the beginning of a long journey where I take control of our lives again.

My goal is to launch a dropshipping business that will shift me out of the "youtube/guru" level of understanding through my first few months. During this time I intend to deeply educate myself and develop strong skills in establishing and growing strong social media assets to leverage long term. (I might be the only one.... but i fucking hate instagram xD)

I studied game development, and now I do enterprise IT application development. I also teach IT development at the high-school level. My web development skills are passable, I am strong in SQL/Databases, C#, and intermediate otherwise. All the IM experience I have is absorbing all the knowledge I can over the past year or so, and a 3 month deep dive into Amazon FBA about a year ago. I feel like I am way past ready to pull the trigger.

    The Start

    Lifestyle Changes

I know I need to make adjustments in my lifestyle and reshape my foundation. I do not feel like I am succeeding as a person and I think that will translate into not succeeding business. I have to be honest with myself and make a change. My fiancee and my business deserve the best possible version of myself.

I will quit smoking- I want to live longer to enjoy this money xD Even though cigs are cheap, I could open 2 shopify stores each month with what I just burn up. Thats 1 more product I could be testing. Or a bit more I could be scaling ad spend.

I started training kickboxing. This forced me back into daily running and intense exercise. I need to dedicate time each day to maintaining this, as after a month I am seeing such a positive impact on my wellness. Now just quit smoking!

I have a strong tendency to talk a big game but not follow through, and Ive gotten lazy over the years. Lately this often comes from feeling overwhelmed with my situation and trying to escape it instead of start kicking its ass. Ill have a good idea for a few days and take the first real obstacle as an excuse to watch youtube or a movie or play a game. I will establish a structure for my daily routine, and instill better discipline in managing my time.

My goal for this is get back that feeling where I WANT to get up every morning, kick the shit out of the day, and feel pride for what I am accomplishing at the personal and professional levels.

Sorry for the saga, here is my Plan:

Launch Shopify store, and make first sale.

Finish product research and select initial product for a 1 product niche store.

I am using a variety of methods for my product research. I do not prefer paid tools as they tend to funnel a large percentage of people into a small percentage of products based on filter results. Instead, I prefer to use my improvement upon the techniques I find. I am reverse searching ads, evaluating order numbers, checking link click counts, etc. If you have some solid strategies I would really appreciate it. I use trials of paid tools to gather what information they can provide. I dont have the funds to fuck this part up, so I am taking it slow and double/triple checking my bases. I have also come across a lot of potentials that might be worth testing later on down the line. I will also find many related products to establish a brand around the right product.

I am also establishing a structure for myself to help organize and expedite this process. In the future I intend to shift this into a database, and ultimately integrate a web application to help simplify and automate tasks. Over time, if worthwhile, I will extend that application to enhance my business processes. At this time, my approach is not sophisticated and costing me to waste additional time.

    Expected Time: 3 days-1 week

Identify the right supplier for the product.

I have contacted suppliers in the past, and have no issues communicating with them. I ended up finding a great supplier for my fba product, if I had ordered. Negotiated a lower price, private label, etc. I expect this to take some time, but I feel confident that I can locate the right supplier and I have some specific criteria.

    Expected Time: 3-5 Days

Press supplier for additional non-public art/photography, and convince them to create fresh content for me.

During my previous experience, I found that many suppliers would go the extra mile to get your orders. I want to take advantage of that. Many suppliers met my request for private photos, videos, ads, even took fresh photography as I asked, etc. I also expect suppliers who understand and work with dropshippers, and also supply a quality product, will be ready to meet my requests along the negotiation process so this will weed out suppliers quickly. Even if I dont choose that supplier, I gain a lot of content that I may be able to use for the supplier of the "same" product I ultimately select. No one on youtube mentions they will do this, just for you to negotiate price or shipping costs. This saves so much time and should enable me to differentiate my product and even brand it without ordering one.

    Expected Time: 1-3 Days

Finish setting up Shopify store, load in primary product and related products.

At the time of writing this post, I have used a few days of my free trial to get familiar with using shopify as a platform. I have 11 days left, but the vision I had when I started the trial has shifted and hopefully I can change the name. I realize now that my product should dictate the direction that this aspect (and many others) will go, and I shouldn't try to do the opposite and choose a niche to dictate the product. If I can change the critical bits about the site, I will spend some time preparing so that when I do finalize my product I will be able to just plug it in and go. I have a number of useful apps installed on my store however I would really appreciate any suggestions you guys have on apps with positive impacts in any facet. I understand that there is a huge knowledge gap and reading each suggestion should expose me to aspects I did not know that I did not know and allow me to improve my myself and my business. You feel me?

I will dedicate hours each week (.5 to 1 day) to zoning in on my website once it is live. I personally feel that my website skills are sub-par and the need for improvement is clear. I also see that many successful brands evolve from a template shopify bootstrap to a more sophisticated site, generally custom. In the short term my focus will be on understanding the friction and resistance points on my site between the customer and the sale, and how to resolve them. I assume I will encounter many common areas as any new shopify store would, and I expect that to lead me deeper into increasingly complex elements and give me a solid level of proficiency to tackle harder and harder tasks with respect to the web presence.

My 1 year goal for this dedication of time is to master HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, probably Ajax and Java. Mainly for data automation and added functionality but I want to be able to use it effectively with versatility. I will likely dive deep into SEO. I am currently intermediate level proficiency or so with these. I will spend 400-500 hours of time over the next year to accomplish this.

    Expected Time(Store): 2-3 Days

Prepare marketing material: Photos, Videos, Write Ad Copy, Review Product Descriptions

I will utilize any photography and video from suppliers, as well as the internet, to put together the marketing assets for the main product. I will identify and exploit the emotional appeal, pain points, and value-adds in at least 3 to 5 approaches for my advertising. I will be running both photo and video ads on facebook and instagram feeds, and using instagram influences. My creative and artistic side is my weakest; im a logical based person. I want to force myself to improve in this area, and I also want some ad variations ready to test for the initial launch. Its a 2-fer.

Expected Time: 1 Day (i hope)

Establish Facebook and Instagram accounts, connect to website, begin loading content, influencer research

I will set up a facebook page, and integrate with the web presence. I will transition an IG account my fiancee has into the IG account for the store. It is already cleared and prepped, has ~1k followers as a starting point. I will begin posting related content and F/UF daily for now.

I will also start engaging with and reaching out to influences in my niche. I expect to educate myself on how to discern a quality influencer from a fake one as quickly as possible. I will also try to incorporate some strategies ive seen, such as 12h for cheaper pricing, having the influencer upsell, offering the product in exchange for the shout out, etc. I would like to have at least 5 influencers lined up for the first few days after launching. This will give me a few opportunities to see the results for myself, and decide how to optimize. I plan to use my best ad set with the first round of influencers and glean performance data. I will trim the fat and continue with the winning ads while introducing the second best ad set along side them with the second round of influencers.

    Estimated Time: .5 - 1 Day

    Test the Store and Checkout

I dont want to make that mistake.

    Launch!

Once I have covered all my bases to the best of my ability, I will launch the store. Immediately I will have an instagram influencer go live with my shoutout and turn on the ad spend for my ad sets. I expect at this point I will be glued to my phone and laptop with the notification volume all the way up praying for however many hours. I am prepared to spend $200-300 to test the waters and have some savings to use to scale if I hit a winner.

Thank you so much for reading this. If you did, the only thing I ask is just to give me your thoughts on my plan. Is this the right direction? Does this outline look weighted for success or failure? I haven't gotten my feet wet and Id love to know if it sounds like ill drown. I know I will ultimately get my answer soon enough, and I sure as shit cant accept a no, so however I need to adapt I am ready.

I will try to update as often as I have time. Best of luck to all of you on your endeavors!

    Thank you so much!

Looked into it. Seems promising. Going to explore it and possibly integrate it. Thank you very much for the suggestion man!

    Will do, most appreciated!

    Update #1

    Day 1:

Ill try to post frequently, hopefully in the beginning i can update daily.

Product has been decided on. I picked something trendy and semi-seasonal with strong value, emotional appeal, novelty, and positive health impacts. I also am able to see the vision for this product very clearly, which has made many aspects easier and given me a lot of ideas in general.

Initial round of supplier research is done. I have reached out to over 20 suppliers and should hear back from them over the next couple days as today was a Sunday.

Shopify store has been registered, I will do the domain in a couple days but it is available. I have started fleshing out and adjusting my template, and importing my products.

    Logo is being created.

I did a market research dive on a lot of public information about my products market and market share. My product niche is the fastest growing product among the niches of my products category, and accounts for over 1/3 of the overall market share of the industry. A large portion of my product's sales are done through mobile devices, and a majority portion is done through online retailers. This market is also uniquely dominated by smaller and boutique retailers who make up a majority of the industry market share. I gained a lot of insight as to which countries both buy and sell the largest volumes of my product and demand trends over time. After reading this and taking an honest look at the landscape I am playing with, I feel confident I can start building and growing my presence successfully.

    TODO:

Finalize shopify store with products imported, descriptions and photography done. I have a lot of material gathered but I need to polish it.

Solidify 3-5 suppliers that can private label. This may not be possible before I am ready to sell, but I will adjust the store when it is available. Long term will be only branded products.

Create Facebook page. Update 1k follower Instagram account. Populate with content.

Begin reaching out to instagram influencers. Leverage product as often as possible against shout out price. Maybe even lead with an exchange, and if no then pay.

Create ad photography / video / copy. Set up first round of ad set tests.

Im too motivated to sleep. I got a lot accomplished but im not done grinding tonight. Just wanted to update.

    Update #2

    Day 2/3:

Tons of progress has been made. I expect to beat my expected time of 1 week and be live in the next 2 days.

Products have been imported. My initial round of products are live. Still have some descriptions to modify for variants and a couple related products that are not super critical.

Logo is done, so is much of the site artwork and design. I expected this to take longer. I ended up doing a solid logo for myself, and a friend helped me photoshop some site imagery.

Social Media accounts are live. Facebook up and integrated. Sadly I cant go super ham on parent child IG accounts, but f/uf by hand for now. My fiancee is a pro at it xD

Reached out to a few IG influencers. Not sure how well the ones I found will do, so I am still looking. Im also trying to check engagement etc for each influencer.

Domain name registered. Since I plan to go live soon, getting the domain set up now as I have heard it can take 48h sometimes.

Suppliers have been responding slowly. I have already weeded out a couple, and a couple look promising.

    TODO:

Finish all product descriptions / photopshopping and be prepared for them to go live.

    Content load Facebook profile.

    Create Ad Copy.

    So far so good!

All the best to you dude!

You mentioned that you have an IT background and teach them to kids too right? Another advice I can give you is while working on building this store, build a side project for yourself and get known as an IT expert of some sort. Instagram, youtube, blog whatever. It's a longer term project, so you can do this as a side project slowly. Make yourself an authority, and then you can start selling softwares, courses and the rest is passive income once you have it build up.

    Thank you so much!

I do have a decent amount of IT experience and I have a few applications that I have built in my portfolio. The downside is they are not nearly as sophisticated as whats available. The last 2 months I have had to take over roles that were handling web service based applications so I have been exposed beyond the backend- something I was previously adverse to wanting to do. Turns out, not nearly as hard as I expected I was just being a pussy. This is a great suggestion and I see the long term value. I dont have a clear vision of how to execute that at this moment, but something I am very interested in. I do have a youtube from my streaming days, 1.5M total views and 3k subs with a dedicated audience. If I find success with dropshipping my secondary goal was a course.

Thank you man, I need all the luck I can get!

Appreciate it, thank you guys for following my journey. The support means a ton- its highly motivating.

    UPDATE #3

I put in about 20 hours on Monday into Tuesday morning, then went directly to the pool for 8 or so hours. Came back, and crashed. I missed working wednesday night but Im rested and full of energy for today, some of which I have already spent :)

I had to make some seriously adjustments to my plan and my strategy. My product is more seasonal than I imagined, and I am kind of late to the season- especially with dropshipping delivery times. As such, I want to try to make sales as soon as possible before the season dries up, and establish this store as a year-round provider of my product. I expect sales during the end of fall and winter to be extremely slow, and I dont expect this store to profit from the holiday season rush in Q4. This kind of set me back on a motivational level and mentally. Now my goal is to get the kinks worked out and educate myself as much as possible so I am in a position of authority with my brand for the spring. In the meantime, I expect to add serious value to my products which will make them desirable year round, but that will take time and serious effort. What started out as a pump and dump strategy has now solidified a shift into a long-term brand, maybe exit this shop if it does well based on the sales data looking good for the season.

Domain is registered and functional. I wanted to make sure I had it, and It was prepared for my launch. Tested on multiple browsers and devices, so far so good with 1 exception when viewing on mobile.

2 potentially winning products are ready to go. I have customized the photography, and other aspects of the visual appearance of the products- added a little salt bae. I have opted to go for 2 specific products in my niche that appeal to 2 different segments of the market. Product 1 will most likely dry up in a month or 2 tops, based on seasonality. This is where product 2 comes in. The person who goes for product 2 is very targeted and specific, but has high demand for this product year round due to their lifestyle. It solves the same problems as product 1 for a specialized market segment, and this segment has the disposable income to afford it. I also have a variant of product 2 that I will test alongside the primary version of product 2.

Product descriptions are done for all main products. Based on all the competition I have seen selling my products, I have blown them out of the water. My descriptions are packed with highlighting the pain points and value benefits of my product. The product photography and the marketing imagery inside the product listing and description is on point. Images, text, styling, etc is extremely consistent and as "on brand" across the site as I can be at this point. I have videos of the product, social proof of the product, and I hand picked stellar reviews with good looking photography. There is also pressure to buy, but I wanted to differentiate myself from other sites that just overload you with countdowns and sales timers and pop ups and shit. The pressure to buy comes in a subtle way focusing on the quality and values of the product, with a little touch of scarcity, demand, and social proof.

Store is properly fleshed out. Collections, navigation, associated pages, social media, etc are all properly integrated and it looks pretty clean. Lots of room for improvement, but at this point it looks like a real and solid online retailer and brand. I have adjusted some of the html and css aspects of the theme as necessary. I still have one issue when my site is viewed on mobile, if anyone can help. The main slide on the Brooklyn theme will be put underneath the uploaded logo so it looks like cancer. If anyone knows how to resolve this issue, please let me know. I have exhausted all of the online sources of support for this issue and none of their methods has resolved it. My HTML game is not strong enough to resolve it on my own- for now!

Social media is up and warmed. Both Instagram and Facebook pages look legit and established. Filled with applicable content for my brand and products, as well as some feel good and comical shit. I wanted to give the impression that we are a devoted brand that has a positive and funny edge. So far I feel like my social media expresses this well. When ready, I will start the first round of posts related to product sales.

    TODO:

Finalize Ads for Product 1, Product 2, and Product 2-1. I intend to test all 3 of these, starting with product 1 and 2 since the appeal to completely different audiences. Based on the performance, I will test product 2-1 and see how it goes. From there, I should have enough information for the first round of retargeting and see if either of these 3 are actually winners. I expect to spend between $100-150 across all 3 campaigns. I hope to finish the ad copy tomorrow.

Resolve the mobile view issue. Not sure how to do this yet, but I will keep digging until i find it. I have a feeling its somewhere deep in the template coding based on the interaction I am seeing. Ive tried to resolve it myself with the developer tools but I have not found success yet.

Finish remaining product descriptions for related products. I took some input from a few difference sources and added some products based on those suggestions, mostly in styling options. My product is currently more focused to men, and these additions are aimed at women. If any of my male products succeed, I will begin testing the best of the womens. I might even do this sooner because I am just running out of time for the season. Fortunately I have a very good "template" for my description copy that I can copy pasta and edit to suit. I expect to finish these tonight.

Schedule Instagram Influencers to post. I have selected a few influencers to try product 2. I havent found very good ones for my primary product- its more broadly appealing and harder to really identify someone who can capture sales with their audience. I think this will end up being trial and error and this worries me. Product 2 is much easier, so I might do ads on p1/p2 and influences on p2.

Launch initial round of facebook ads. Pixel is installed. Have a few shopify apps that will hopefully help with conversion, retargeting, email marketing. Ive watched so much content on facebook/ig ads. I intend to start with engagement, then transition into conversion and lookalike audiences based on performance. Pray4me <3

That about sums it up for now. I have a couple hours of jscript and ajax training today that will cut into my time. I also have to change countries on Friday- life sucks for an american trying to live in Europe without visas. It is possible I will have issues on the borders each time I cross. I hope to start hearing cha-chings before I have to leave on Friday. That gives me just about 48 hours from now. If anyone has any tips on creating fb ad copy that isnt on youtube (cuz ive watched it all), drop it here for me <3

Thanks again for all the support and positivity, it has really helped more than you guys know.

    Hey man,
I see that you are very motivated but keep in mind to ask experienced people about your store. In the beginning you don't see the mistakes you are making and you could be wasting money.

Feel free to PM me your store and I can help you optimize a few things. I am also dropshipping and my first stores were thrash but I thought they are great lol.

    UPDATE #4

Been a couple days. A lot has happened. Lets start with the good bits.

The store is live. Im not satisfied with where its at, but its coming along. I have my main product set to go, and everything else is fleshed out well and on brand. I wanted to get an initial round of info back via ads to see if im even on target.

Ads are running. About 12$ spent. I have 1 video and 1 image ad, and im testing each. Probably sink 50$ into each and see where that goes. They have been running about an hour or so, maybe a bit longer, no sales yet. Pray5meh.

Now, on to the stellar bits.

I showed my store to an friend of my fiancee's. He was impressed. He was planning to open a retail store in his country, and immediately connected the 2 concepts together. He offered to financially back a physical store and online retail store selling the products he wants but without his name attached. Its a culturally "strict"-ish country and he is an insanely well known figure. Cant have his name near anything to do with adult novelty. Everything this guy touches turns to gold (hes worth over 140M euro, and climbing by the second). If I dont sell a single product in my store, it will have all been worth it to go into business with this guy.

Does anyone know how to adeptly market adult novelty products? I have been amassing knowledge but id appreciate any advice.

Another family member of mine has a great idea and product for a shopify store. He wants me to build it out for him and advertise. He will foot the ad spend and offered a 50/50 profit share after cost. Ill take both options offered and continue my store.

What started out as a shot in the dark might still be, in respect to my "winning product". Its possible I even missed the season, or atleast the feeding frenzy might be over. I am investing in my brand for long term, so we will see. On the plus side, I have 2 projects that landed in my lap thanks to my efforts here. I will extend my updates to include the progress on those fronts.

Thanks for all the support so far and im looking forward to bringing some good news in the next few updates!

    Thanks man!!

    UPDATE #5

Few things to post so lets get into it.

Store #1 sent about 170 people through my funnel with 58$ ad spend. No sales. Not going to lie, disappointing. I have made some adjustments to my targeting and ill throw another 50$ at it. I should have atleast converted a couple sales from that, enough to cover my ad spend. Not the end of the world, but definitely not the start I was hoping for on my "winning product". Ill update after the next round and see if anything pans out better. About 10k views on my facebook video ad, so its possible that some credibility due to the view count could lend some support.

Store #2 is almost complete. I am working with 3 other people on this store, and we are pushing hard. Their idea revolves around supplying products that an entire region does not have access to. They are all from this region and thoroughly understand what people there want, and what they cannot get. We are filling that gap. They are also well connected with influencers, online groups, and other aspects so initially we will not push any ad spend while we see how much traction this gets. The average order value is about 150-200$, with about half being profit (without ad spend). Based on the economies of the countries we are selling to this is a massive purchase, however there are enough with money to make this feasible. I dont know what to expect for this store since I am not knowledge enough and relying on their perception of the market. I do know this stuff isnt available, and those who do get it have friends or family bring it from outside the country.

Store #3 is in the planning phase. I am contacting local suppliers of adult novelty goods and trying to source physical products for a physical location in a different country. This will be paired with a shopify store carrying the same catalog so purchases can be made discretely, and we will be delivering from our physical location. The guy backing the store owns a few dozen businesses, one of them being a delivery company so we pay next to nothing to put it on their doorstep. Main hurdle is getting the supplier to get the products to his country. He does not want to go through aliexpress or alibaba, he wants it sourced in this region. This region doesnt speak much english, and I understand these languages ok but I dont speak them the best. Its a struggle for me xD

I have family coming in from the US over the next month. This is already a huge workload and with family to manage on top its gunna be hard. Wish me luck lol

    Update #6

Even though I am starting to feel like im talking to myself, heres a short update.

Im at 100$ ad spend exactly. The last 20$ or so was spent retargeting. As expected, 0 sales.

I sent about 400 people total through the funnel. I had a decent video ad that highlighted the product and various value aspects of it. I also tested an image ad, which didnt get any traction. Im about 40k views on the video ad, and about 30 organic shares, on top of my 40+ shares into facebook groups related to my niche. Facebook actually fucking blocked me from joining or posting in groups, even though all the groups I joined were not only in my niche, but specifically for buy/sell/trade of niche products. I appealed of course, but it legit says no human will review this appeal.... so yeah. Maybe ill get a lingering sale or 2 to recover some of the investment. Probably not. Guess I learned the hard way that my product is shit, and even if i wrap it in flowers and shine a pretty light on it, shit is still shit. 400 clicks, no sales. Tested the cart myself, that shit works.

I will revamp the store and try again. Maybe just push some better products through it, and let it rest until next season rolls around. Hopefully by then I will have built up some sort of audience and be able to really push this store.

Store #2 is dead before it starts. The goal was to bring name brand products to a large region of countries that does not have access to them. I guess I figured out why- about 30$ to ship to these countries and clear customs, on top of a 50-60day+ shipping time at the fastest. While I could still be above 50% profit eating the shipping cost, or more like 60% if splitting it with the customer, no one in their right mind is going to wait 50 to 60 days or longer for shit they order. Not even when they cant get it anywhere in their country. I have exhausted dozens of reputable suppliers of the products to pretty much the same end result.

Store #3 Adult novelty store has promise. I have contacted physical suppliers here and I am preparing this information for the backer so we can plan how to proceed. I expect this to be a few month long process.

Im really disappointed, and a bit demotivated, but fuck it I am not stopping. My fiancee wants to give it a go now based on what we have learned and experienced so far. The products she has selected are admittedly much better than my "losing" product.

Damn, I feel you with those 0-sales-ad problems. Nonetheless, reading through this really is inspiring. As much as I want you to have success, I want you to keep pushing forward. There is always a way to improve, even if it is quit smoking.

Good luck on your journey, OP. I think you are on the right path. Looking forward for that update!
