[Journey] Building a Large Authority Site by 2024

That's great! Let's see where the following 6 months takes us. Are you writing your own content or are you outsourcing?
I write my own, I've never outsourced writing. For a couple of reasons, I am not a big fan of this solution. I write 2 articles per day Mon-Fri. During weekends - it depends on how far I am with the schedule. By 31/05/2024 I need to have 308 articles written and then I'll schedule 3 per week till the end of the year. I am also building small Pinterest profile around the website + Quora profile. So far, I have 18 followers and 1,4k answers viewed respectively :D But it's not something I focus too much.

Small Update

Today I finalized the manual internal linking with all the current articles and removed the related posts plugin. Have read on numerous places that those types of plugins can harm your Google rankings and as I mentioned in the OP I want to remove all risks of getting on Google's radar.

Also did some more keyword research today and found some amazing keywords I will target in the next content batch.

Traffic keeps steady at about 30 visits per day, expecting the traffic to grow a bit more until March. Yesterday marked the middle of February and the website has already surpassed January in terms of traffic. If nothing changes I should get a 100% growth month over month. Very pleased with the rate the website is growing this early on.

Regarding the new position at work I was talking about earlier: Today the boss called me and said I made it to the final step in the process, will meet her boss some day next week and if she likes me I will be offered the position.

I salute you. Would never have the motivation to sit down and write multiple articles myself every day. Do you use any tools to speed up the process? Like outlines and stuff or do you do everything manually? I'm sure you'll reach your goal!

Have you seen any traffic coming in from social yet? I'm thinking about doing Pinterest (my niche would fit there well), but it seems like a lot of work haha. Maybe there are tools to automate the process, or perhaps I could outsource it. Will have to look into it a bit more.

Great idea and looking forward for your update. Let's hope for the best. Good Luck
Thanks!

Thanks!

In terms of number of posts, I am sure I will reach the goal. So far, I have 116 posts. I am not sure how it will be in terms of what happens around us. Well, let's see what this year brings.

I do not have any traffic from social media. So far, I collected 25 Pinterest followers. You are right, it is a lot of work, but note that once you set up everything, it takes 5 min per day to follow/unfollow, send new pins, and write 10 comments. At least I am not spending more time on it. Maybe I could use some tools in the future, I will see.

I dedicate 4-6h per day on this project so it is time consuming. I use AI tools, but I do not let it write post for me at all. It is helpful in creating punchy titles, writing Pinterest comments, outlines, and the most important part - correcting my texts and making them easier to read. I am not good enough in English, so I am not able to build these nice engaging sentences. All in all, the text and research are on me. I also add pictures, videos related to the topic. One post takes me approx. 2h.

Just a very small update: The past 2 weeks I have had pretty consistent 30 visitors per day, but something happened yesterday. Early in the day I checked my analytics and saw I already had 20 organic visits, thinking this day was gonna be a big day. Forgot to check again, but today I opened up and saw the total number of visits yesterday was 55! So i did hit my first 50 visitor day this month just as I expected. Let's just hope it wasn't some random fluke and that it stays consistent. Still have not added any affiliate links, so I probably won't get my first sale this month.

Month 4 Update

Hey guys, sorry for the late update. Last week I realized I want to change the journey quite a bit. Been looking into affiliate marketing with paid ads the past couple of weeks and came up with a bold idea. I'm still going to update the journey every month and I also will aim to reach my goal of 600+ articles by January 2024. However, I want to do an experiment of sorts. I'll talk more about the idea I have down below but first I want to cover the progress for February.

What I've Done in February

The website is now 4 months old and is still growing strong. Last month I ordered 32 articles, bringing the total to 135. Still not enough to make up for the missed articles in January but I'm happy with the progress so far.

I decided to try Link Whisper, got it from Festinger and I'm impressed. It's not entirely hands-free but it worked way better than I expected. Have yet to see any direct impact in the SERPS from this as I already had most of the articles interlinked.

Traffic

In early February I had a few days in a row with 30 visitors, then it kind of slowed down for almost a week. It picked back up and stayed pretty consistent around 30-40 visitors per day the entire month, except for one day that reached 55 visitors. I'm hoping this month will stabilize on 50+ and have a few days with 70-80.

As you can see we are so close to 1000 pageviews/month. I don't think we will be able to double the traffic again in March and reach 2000+ but let's see what happens.

Earnings

Still have not monetized the site with ads yet. However, I did add some Amazon affiliate links, no clicks or conversions in February though. But, on March 1st I had my first 2 sales! Unfortunately only cheap products so the earnings are literally pennies so far. I hope to see some more sales coming in this month.

So what's this experiment I'm planning?

Starting next month I want to try this idea I have. At first, I wanted to try it on a new domain but decided to do it on this website instead as I want to commit to only one project in 2023. The idea is simple but could make a big difference if successful. As I mentioned, over the past couple of weeks I've been looking into affiliate marketing with paid ads. Now, I don't want to promote any digital products just yet but I got the idea from a massive authority site in my niche.

First off, I can't find a WordPress theme that fits my needs for this approach, so I decided to build a custom one myself. That's mainly why this journey update has been delayed. The idea is that I want to start targeting higher competition keywords, with high-quality buyer's guides. These articles will promote a few high-ticket items, which then will be targeted with paid ads (Google Ads mainly).

I have already found a buyer's keyword, it's a "Best X for Y" type of keyword. There are no other websites running ads to this keyword in Google as of now, and the volume is around 2000 per month. The article is ordered and on its way, a total of 3500 words and the cost for this article is $120. Initially, I want to invest $100 in ads, just to get my feet wet as well as gather data. Once the campaign has some data I will optimize for more related keywords. Yesterday I applied to a niche-specific affiliate network that pays 8%, so will promote both Amazon and this new network. Hopefully, this will increase the ROI a bit more.

I'm not very good at explaining the approach, so if anything is unclear, please feel free to ask. Also, if you have tried this type of strategy feel free to comment as I would love to hear your thoughts!

Aside from this, it's business as usual. I will try to follow the original content plan which would be 600+ articles by January 2024.

Wanted to do a small update

Since I'm going to start experimenting with Google Ads in April I thought why not do a trial run now? Just started a Google Ads campaign, will see how it performs and if I will be able to turn profitable after some optimization. Running exact match for two related keywords that have a total of 8k monthly searches according to some tools. Set the budget to $10/day and manually bid on $0.20 to start. The landing page is properly optimized as a buyer's guide promoting some high-ticket products. Just not sure how to best create the ad headings and descriptions. Does anyone have any tips or perhaps a good Youtube video to recommend?

Looking at my SERPRobot rankings, I see almost all keywords have had top 10 positions, only 11 have historically never been top 30, and another 5 have never ranked at all. How can I improve these articles? Does anyone have any suggestions? It's strictly informational posts, the content is not bad but could probably be improved a bit. What's the best approach?
  • Adding more subheadings, making the articles longer, including more related keywords and questions? (all articles are around 1000-1200 words)
  • Or should I focus on improving the current text, making it a bit more engaging?
I see the time on page is less than ideal, 12-30 sec depending on the day of the week. Not sure if this is because they find what they are looking for immediately (targeting snippets in the second paragraph) or something negative.

Something positive: I am seeing consistent 50+ visitors per day now. Just waiting to get a random day with 80+. Oh, and by the way, I won't be including the paid traffic in my updates. I will most probably do two separate updates, one with organic traffic and one with paid traffic.

Awesome journey.

I'd suggest having a look at your bounce rate.

May I ask you the name of the agency? You can send it via PM if you want.

Hey guys! I already have a few smaller websites up and running but wanted to start something big, and mostly hands-free. The website is a few months old by now, started on November 1st, 2022, but wanted to get some content up before making this journey thread.

Let's start with the FAQ since people always seem to miss them and keep asking the same questions.

Where do I get my articles?

I use a well-known agency for all my articles. Most articles are outsourced, and I pay $25/1000 words. However, I'm not very satisfied with the quality of some of the writers, will try some other content agencies as well in this journey. I might try hiring my own writers as soon as the website starts bringing in some steady cashflow.

Am I building backlinks?

Not yet, I will start with low-competition keywords and no link-building. Later on in the journey, I will start targeting medium to high-competition keywords and send them some guest posts and other powerful links. Probably in the second half of 2023.

Fresh or aged domain?

I'm using a fresh domain, no history, 2-word .com domain. I want as few reasons as possible for Google to hit me in any future updates.

What's the niche? Can you share your domain?

The niche is fairly broad, as I want to build a massive website. The closest I can give away is 'Home and Garden'. And no, I will not disclose my URL.

How will I monetize the site?

Until I reach a reasonable amount of monthly visitors I will mainly monetize with affiliate products. I want to use Amazon mainly but also one niche-specific affiliate network for each category. I've seen some crazy numbers from other sites that utilized smaller affiliate networks in this niche. Later I will go for Ezoic and then Mediavine. The content, however, is not affiliate-focused. I will strive for a ratio of 90/10 info and affiliate articles.

Now on to the journey!

As I mentioned, the website is about two months old as of now. I already have 63 articles (currently editing 9 more so in a few days there will be 72), all indexed and optimized for on-page. My goal is to increase the total number of articles to 600+ by January 2024.

I have a day job, as well as some chump change coming in from other websites. As I don't want to write everything myself I am going to outsource most of the articles.

My budget? Well, up until may I will have about 30-35 articles written per month. June and forward I will have more funds available and try to push for 50 articles each month. I will try to average 40+ articles per month throughout the year.

I know SEO is slow, especially for a fresh domain with no authority. But, I hope by the end of the year the articles will start bringing in some revenue that can be reinvested into more content. Ideally, I would like to push for 700+ articles but that may be a stretch.

This is my original plan but it might change over the course of the year.

November 2022

This website was started on November 1st. The Google spam update from October was fresh on my mind and I was worried my new website would have trouble indexing (as many people had reported around that time). Fortunately, as soon as I had 30 articles up and running and submitted my sitemap to GSC, the articles started indexing within hours.

Not much happened in November, as I mostly focused on doing keyword research and ordering the content. I ordered and uploaded a total of 40 articles in the month of November.

December 2022

At the beginning of December, the website started ranking top 3 for a bunch of keywords but the Google dance was keeping the rankings from sticking. There were a few clicks every day on Google which held my hopes up, and it continued growing.

In December I ordered another batch of 32 articles, bringing my total to 73 articles. These are all articles in the same sub-niche, as I don't want to spread myself too thin. It's all about topical authority, trying to get at least 100 posts per category before moving on to the next one.

Here are the stats for November and December:

Google Analytics (I'm still using Universal Analytics, as I really have no idea how GA4 works. I seem to get different stats from the two, not sure what that's all about. Will probably just start using a 3rd party tool for tracking my visitors.)

Google Search Console

View attachment 238062

As you can see, not much is happening just yet. I'm eager to see what will happen in the coming months with more articles.

I'm currently tracking my keywords with SERPRobot, but will probably switch in the near future. Here are the stats as of January 1st:

View attachment 238063

Goals for this month
  • I put in a lot of extra hours at work in December, so I will try to order around 60 new articles, bringing the total to 130 articles.
  • Would also like to see some steady traffic (even if not much) as the website is closing in on 3 months.
  • Buy keyword research. I want to try out some keyword research packages from here and will target a new sub-niche/category for these keywords. Keyword research is so time-consuming and as I mentioned in the beginning I want to build this website as hands-free as possible.
That's pretty much where I am at today. As I'm ordering articles in bulk every month I won't have a lot of news to update about during the weeks. However, I'm sure there will be some sporadic weekly updates as well, as some traffic and sales start to roll in.

Goals for this journey

In April the website will be 6 months old and have 250 articles. I'm hopeful that by this summer the website will get 5k+ sessions per month with some income from Ezoic and Amazon.

The goal for January 2024 is to reach 600+ articles and 50k sessions per month. I would love to have some income during Q3 and Q4 of 2023 to reinvest in articles and backlinks, bringing the total amount of articles closer to 700.

By 2024 I will have invested somewhere around $15k, which means I need it to be valued at $15k+. To achieve this the website will need to generate around $400-500/month. However, I'm sure the website will be able to do more than that if everything goes as planned.

Sometime in mid-late 2024 I want to sell the website. My hopes are that the website will be generating at least $1k/month so I can sell it for $30k+.

I will update once a month and try to do some updates in between if something major happens.

Why not try creating your own content? Seems a bit much to pay 1.7k for content on your website.

Awesome journey.

I'd suggest having a look at your bounce rate.

Hey thanks! Yes, now that I have some more traffic I am a bit worried about the high bounce rate. Will try to look into it, but not sure what could be the problem. I'm not sure if I can disclose the agencies. Still looking for other agencies, might disclose them later on in the journey.

dang that is my niche bro hahaha I hope our keywords doesnt match at all
Haha well, home and garden is VERY broad. But if you have a low authority website with decent traffic there's a big chance I've had a look at it already ;) Generally I only get one or two keywords per competitor, only working on 3 categories at the moment so will take some time to expand. How's your site doing? Do you find your sub-niches competitive?

Why not try creating your own content? Seems a bit much to pay 1.7k for content on your website.
Well, I'm lazy. Having a full-time job and not wanting to work 24/7 for 2 years to fill out the website. Since the website is growing I'm confident I will be able to get the investment back someday. It's a long-term investment and I also don't mind losing the money if Google happens to flip the switch, sure it would suck but it's not the end of the world.

How's your site doing? Do you find your sub-niches competitive?
doing great and since its a fresh domain, thus I choose low comp kw and sub-niche to the 3rd level down have many low DA also so most likely its not on your level since yours is more broad

So after a lot of tinkering with Google Ads I finally have impressions and a few clicks, no conversions yet but I'm mostly testing and trying to understand how it all works. I'm trying to filter out paid traffic in Google Analytics 4, does anyone know how? Would like to do two separate graphs for my updates, one with organic and one with paid.

Will see how the ads perform over a longer period of time and also try to tweak it a bit.

I see, well there are a lot of sub-niches in the home and garden niche, each with tons of low comp keywords. Just found one yesterday that I have never thought of before, and there's this one website with DA 3 that is owning every single #1 spot, hundreds of keywords actually and no backlinks. Will save it for later as I have not started that vertical yet.

Actually, come think about it I might just set up an AI website covering the entire category.

Quick update: Yesterday (April 2nd) I crossed 100 daily visitors, a total of 106 organic (Google and Bing) + 6 more direct! This is a big milestone, especially since the past week has been very consistent. I will post the March update later this week.

Month 5 Update

(I need some help with Ad Manager/Ezoic, read further down)

Hey guys! The website is now 5 months old and growing every day. So, what has happened since the last update? Well, I've been pretty busy lately, and we're planning a trip to Albania in a few weeks so my mind is focused on that most of the time. However, I did manage to order 30 new articles in March, bringing the total to 165. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for 7 articles as the TAT is getting worse every month, so I really need to find another content agency or start looking to hire my own writer.

I did also try Google Ads but it didn't turn out as well as I had hoped. During the two weeks I ran the campaign I only got 32 clicks for $20, averaging $0.625 per click. Almost all visitors clicked the Amazon link as well, but no conversions sadly. Will try more later on, as now I only want to focus on getting started with Ezoic and seeing some motivational $$ signs.

As I mentioned in the last update, I created my own WordPress theme. I'm really happy with it, and it looks amazingly professional. It's a simple design, with no sidebar, and soft colors. Changing from GeneratePress didn't seem to impact the performance at all, probably since it's built very lightweight.

Another little side project I've been busy with lately: Last year I bought a starter site, it brings in about $10/month from Adsense, but the domain is so specific that I just can't grow it anymore. Been thinking about rebranding the website for a while but since the website was just sitting there I kind of forgot about it. In the past month, it's grown 100% in traffic and I feel I have to work on it at least a little bit. So last week, I bought a new domain and did the transfer. Fingers crossed it doesn't crash and burn now. My main focus will still be on the first website covered in this journey, just might throw a few articles per month on this one as well.

Traffic

In the last update, I predicted that the site would stabilize at around 50 visits per day with a few days of around 70 to 80 visits. I also said that we probably can't hope for a 100% increase in traffic. I was wrong on both. The traffic stabilized between 55-60 visits per day, and for 4 days I reached 90+ with the highest day being 95 visits. My prediction that the website probably won't reach 100% growth and 2000 pageviews was not entirely wrong, but I did reach 1975 pageviews, an increase of 98.8%!

March was so close to reaching 100 visits per day. But as you saw in my quick update a few days ago I have reached 100 daily visits and that seems to be stable throughout the first week of April at least. I have a feeling that the next update will have some amazing numbers in terms of traffic.

My rankings have improved A LOT since the last update. Before I had only 4 keywords ranked #1, today I have 12. I really feel that I've chosen good keywords, and I hope the traffic will reflect that when more and more long-tails start to rank higher.

What I will do in April

As I mentioned already, we are planning a trip to Albania and I'm super excited. This winter has been a lot colder than usual and lots of very extreme snow storms (northern Europe). It's also my birthday next week, so I will spend the weekend with friends and family.

In terms of content, I want to reach 200+ articles. My goal for April was to reach 250 articles but I am not complaining, you should always count on some setbacks and deviations from the initial plan. There are still 8 months to go until 2024, I am confident that I will catch back up.

Get set up with Ezoic

Last week I joined Ezoic, just have to set everything up but not sure how. I am accepted in Adsense but for some reason, I got rejected by Google Ad Manager. Apparently, I already had a publisher account, closed it down, and now whenever I try to login to the ad manager I get thrown in a loop, sent back to the homepage with the login button. If I try to join again I get an error message on a blank page saying I'm not authorized and I have no idea what to do. I have contacted Ezoic with the issue and waiting for a response. Everything else seems fine and there should be no problems at all with the site or the content (I'm running Adsense just fine).

So the next update I want to be able to present a bit more income. I'm also going to update some more articles and insert Amazon links, hopefully bringing the Amazon revenue up a few $ as well.

Predictions for the next update

I can already see the traffic is here to stay, those 90+ peaks in March were not just random spikes, the traffic stays consistent. In April I want to see the traffic grow just a little bit more, stabilizing somewhere around 110-120 visits per day with a few days reaching as high as 150. Hopefully, the trend will stay strong and I will reach close to a 100% increase in traffic again. This would mean closer to 4000 pageviews and that's a good mark to start display ads in my opinion.

The revenue is still pretty much non-existent. I really need to get ads up and running to see where my RPM will be. But I'm not stressing, I don't care if I have to invest $10k in content before I make my money back, I'm in it for the long run and I can definitely see the potential in this website.

The revenue is still pretty much non-existent. I really need to get ads up and running to see where my RPM will be. But I'm not stressing, I don't care if I have to invest $10k in content before I make my money back, I'm in it for the long run and I can definitely see the potential in this website.

We're just going to stay around Tirana, exploring some of the cities around the coast like Durres :) Do you have any recommendations for what to do while in Albania? Or what to avoid, if any. Never been there before but I really like exploring new places. How long have you been there? Is it a good, and cheap country for a digital nomad?

I was born here and live in the EU.

Currently, I am in Durress and will be here until May.

I can't say much about what to do because I haven't explored it myself either, I don't live here, and I do not know what you like to do.

What not to do: drugs and gambling, both illegal.

If you rent a car, always watch out for other drivers. Driving rules and signs are not respected in many cases.

It is cheap compared to other Eu countries but not as cheap as it used to be years ago.

Let me know if you have specific questions and I'd be glad to help.
