Yes, I would say this update has killed my kayaking site. https://www.seroundtable.com/google-helpful-content-update-33949.html

Even though I am a kayaking enthusiast and own six kayaks, my traffic has dropped substantially even after adding 40 posts this past few months.

25% drop in the last 7 days.

There are 140 posts on this kayaking site. It is almost 3 years old. To be doing this badly, it has to have been penalized.

So what I'm taking away from all this is not to bother writing about something unless you are an expert. EAT still plays a big role. Just sucks if you have put hundreds of hours into a niche that you are are a fan of but not an expert. Use to be you learned your way into being an expert by blogging about all the different aspects of the niche...as you went along.

I don't see it that way now.

Oddly, my other two niche sites which are solely written for ad revenue were not affected by the Google content update. My kayak site continues to be down 13-20% daily. But my Christmas and my Keto sites are up. They, however, have very few articles. So maybe Google didn't go after the sites with little material. Christmas has around 30 articles and Keto has around 52 posts. Kayak has 140 posts.

Keto site is up 34% in the last 7 days. Christmas site is up 31% in the last 7 days. Radiology is up 1.3% (whoopie). Kayak is down -14.2%.

Interesting. What do you think in general about the algo update? What is the reason for the drop?

According to the news releases, the update went after sites that are targeting keywords and writing content with the intent to garner traffic for profit. That's exactly what blogging is...so?

My kayak site is full of posts that I wrote to target keywords and answer questions for visitors. My EAT is not very strong so I'm guessing that I"m not appearing as an "authority" and therefore not worthy of Google's traffic.

We'll see how it turns out. The dramatic drop in traffic is starting to subside. The last 7 days are still down but only 3.6% now instead of 24% from a few days ago.

Just my .02, but at this point on your journey I would stop adding content and start going back through your old posts and making them better. I saw you added youtube vids which is great, but there's a lot of other things you could be doing to spruce up your top ranking posts and others as well. I don't think you're going to hit 200 posts and all of a sudden google turns the switch on.

The traffic on your kayaking site does seem low considering the number of articles but I'm guessing kayaking is pretty competitive. I've got a site that never popped, threw good articles and links at it but the traffic is like yours. I've not experienced any issues with EAT and I do very little to promote my expertise and my sites that do ok.

The current drops could be that you're coming down from the peak July traffic, looking at Google trends each years peak is generally lower than the previous year.

You could be on to something there. I do bucket brigades, obligatory 2-3 images, plenty of inbound/outbound links, proper amount of kw sprinkled in the headings and paragraphs. So I started adding a YouTube vid at the top.

What else would you recommend at this point? Or maybe just rewriting them ?

I've had Table of Contents for a while. Bulleted lists too. Pretty much everything you said...I've been doing. I still think I've been tagged for something.

Err, short question with a long answer. Summary: in the beginning, we were told not to build links. Now Income School says, "of course you build links."

Hello World,

BHW has been helpful to me, maybe my journey will spark ideas for you.

Case Study:

  • Can I make a profit following the Project 24 method found at IncomeSchool.com? It is a https://s3.amazonaws.com/incomeschool/Project+24+Timeline+(How+we+plan+to+get+there+and+what+to+expect).xlsx and eludes to being able to replace your full-time job in 24 months.
Background:

  • I have been blogging for over ten years but only dabbling. I am familiar with Blogger and WP. I have coded in HTML, PHP, CSS, C++, ...and I'm so old I cut my teeth on Basic, Fortran, and Cobol. This is my first attempt to get serious with blogging in hopes of replacing my 9-5 job.
Timeline:
  • April: Establish niche site #1, complete Steps 1-21 of Project 24
  • May: Complete Steps 22-40
  • June: Complete Steps 41-60
  • July: Establish niche site #2, complete Steps 1-21
  • Aug: Complete Steps 22-40
  • Sept: Complete Steps 41-60
Month 1 - April 2019

Pretty much the same stuff that is on their YT channel. It was very difficult for me to decide on a niche. There is a list from Income School that you can download from their site and it contains dozens of ideas. My first question was "how many are still good if you've been giving this list out for a while?" So I continued until I found my own.

My advice: if you can't decide on a niche, go with what you know. I won't divulge mine but let's just say if I was a plumber... I would create a blog about the plumbing profession.

I used good old FlamingText.com to create a temporary logo.

I dropped around $80 for an annual subscription to Elegant Themes.

Helpful Hint: To learn Divi like a boss, watch https://ferdykorpershoek.com/create-a-wordpress-website-using-the-divi-theme/.

Domain Name and Hosting

So I picked a domain name with the words of my profession in it. Example: TheCertifiedPlumber.com or something like that. I went with BlueHost for hosting as suggested by Income School. I bought the annual hosting package for $80 and it came with the domain name free. I set up Word Press and began creating content.

Article Hit List

Writing 10 Response Posts

Knocking these out took me a little over a week. I work full-time and have a large family so I did these mostly at night after everyone had gone to bed. Many nights I stayed up until 2 or 3 am to get the posts done. I started the whole process mid-April and was able to finish with the 10 Response Posts by May 1st.

Resizing the Images

I actually didn't want to do this due to monotony. I skipped it and moved on to the next month's tasks.

Stats:

I saw no traffic this month and didn't even have a hit counter or analytics installed. Project 24 says you won't see your first $5 until month SIX of the process. I was content just blogging my brains out for April.

[Sneak Peek, I'm six weeks in and seeing traffic and income. Nothing great, mind you but it is starting and way ahead of the projected plan. ]

Family duties call. I'll continue with what I did in May with some screenshots as soon as I get more free time.

Thanks for reading.

This is one of the intended culminations of a blog: taking all the information you have learned and shared along the way...and writing a book about it.

I am adding an online Xray Tech Survival Guide in video format. It has been a project on my wishlist for a long time. I could never quite figure out how to go about it.

I've decided that instead of trying to write a book (anyone still reading books?) I would do short bursts of videos, under 10 minutes in length, for each "lesson" of the course.

I downloaded Mysteriyo for the courses, and it has been super easy to create the course so far.

This blog has over three years' worth of material on it. The biggest task was sorting it all into "chapters" and creating a kind of Table of Contents.

I decided not to charge for the course so far. Since it is built inside my blog and I have Ezoic ads on every page, I will see how much traffic it drives to my ads.

Plus, the videos I'm creating for the course will be hosted on YouTube, where I get paid for content (although not much, YT sucks for revenue).

I also plan to insert spoken advertisements at the beginning and end of my videos. I listened to a Tim Ferriss podcast tonight and will follow his template.

Probably just a generic Audible ad at the beginning and end since I don't have any official sponsors.

If you guys know of a better payout than Audible to mention at the beginning of my videos, please let me know.

Thanks for this thread, Ron.

Quick question, why did you pick Mysteriyo over other packages?
Well, good question. Mostly because it was in Festinger's Vault.

Then I tested it out and it gave me everything I was looking for, including make my course free or paid.

The only hitch I have come across so far is that the embedded video option doesn't play on my iPhone. You can embed videos in Masteriyo or host them elsewhere.

Once I moved my vids to YouTube, which added revenue, everything worked fine.

I tried placing a help ticket on WP to find out why the self hosted videos weren't playing but never got a response.

What do you mean it shouldn't? If I did my kw research, wrote good articles (all of which has been logged in this journey, step by step) then I most certainly should be making some money with 100 posts.

And Ezoic should pay better than Adsense. Plus added in some Amazon Affiliate links to boot.

I'm thinking there's something wrong with the indexing or the site is penalized. Kayaking is an evergreen niche.

Early on in this journey, I noted that when I created a YouTube channel for this kayaking blog...I got kicked off YouTube. I had started to ask for channel subs in other videos to drive up subscriptions. This got me flagged and my account deleted. Since google owns YT, I'm wondering if that left a black mark on my blog. The blog and YT channel were clearly linked. I had over 20 videos on the channel when they shut it down.

Something happened about two years ago that caused a big drop in traffic.

That sharp decline in traffic around Nov 2020 is when I stopped blogging for a few years and picked back up just a few months ago.

Could traffic drop THAT much if you stop adding content?

Maybe the problem was sharing your site in here. I've seen people lose their traffic and rankings for sharing your site in here as they negative seo their sites and they fall off of serps and lose rankings and traffic.

Maybe you should start a new site and NOT share your domain/URL in here, in my humble opinion.

The URL was shared in the very beginning. Traffic didn't start to fall off until afterwards. Not a big deal at this point. Radiology is a very tiny niche so I can't expect much.
