I hope that opening this thread and getting feedback that it will enable me to kick start my drive to begin new sites. I read somewhere that getting input from other people makes you want to strive more.

Anyways, I am in my 30s and a graphic designer, but what I am really passionate about is writing. During my school days, I use to daydream all the time about various ideas. Writing was the outlet of those musings.
Around 5 years ago, I discovered personal blogging. I wrote about politics, art, economics, philosophy, science, etc. I wrote not because I want to make money but because I really love the notion of writing. Seeing dozens of positive comments on a short story that I wrote brings pure unadulterated joy. The comment plus smiley in the parody I?ve written lift's spirit that day.

I was satisfied to make blogging a hobby, when one day, I stumbled upon man who bought a car from the income he derived from blogging. Being a poor schmuck who can barely pays his rent, I was intrigue and want to know how he did it. His advice is: write what you are passionate about, apply for Adsense and the money will follow.

I followed his advice and put some Adsense in my personal blog at BlogSpot. The result was dismal. The income was not even enough to cover my daily snacks. I was about to give up when one of my articles got the heads up by a famous blogger. Bam! The links poured in. Front page back when Digg was still relevant. The traffic surged, and my income at least for that month more than covered my snacks expenses. Suffice to say that single article opened my eyes to the possibility.

On that day, I decided that my blogging for hobby was over. A few months later, I stop writing in my personal BlogSpot, remove the Adsense from it and dedicated all my writing time elsewhere. I did a lot of reading about building Adsense sites. I did a keyword research, and use the money from Adsense to hand registered three exact match domains and set them up on the custom domain of Blogger. I paid Hostgator for a few years and have tried Wordpress, but I seeing that I am more comfortable with the Blogger interface, I stuck with them.

    Authority Site #1

EMD Local US at GAKT ? 200+
    CPC at GAKT - $1.7
    Ads Platform - Adsense
    Actual Average CPC - $0.21
    Average Monthly Income - $150
Number of Pages - 800+ Posts
    Backlinks - 9000+ (600+ Domains)
    EMD Google Position - #1
    EMD Bing Position - #1

These articles are my bread and butter. I write here whenever the inspiration strikes. I sometimes go months without writing. This site proved resilient during the Panda, Penguin update. However back in the November 2011 it took a significant traffic dive when the ?Freshness update? rolled in. However, there were months where I wrote non-stop, twice or thrice a day, that?s where I see significant increase in traffic and income. Most of the traffic though comes from long tail keywords.

I manually built backlinks for it but since then stopped building backlinks. This site still receives links from anonymous random sources. Whenever a keyword I rank for trends in Google, I earn around $3000 in a month. There was a month last year when this site earned $7,000. Those months were short-lived however, as the site has since stabilized to around $150 a month.

I use almost all the money to help a poor family. Is it wrong to altruistically help others, instead of reinvesting the money to further increase the coffer? It depends on who you ask, but for me helping others in need has a socio-political, as well as economic benefits in the long run. Plus it feels good to see others improve their life.

    Micro Niche Site #1

EMD Local US at GAKT ? 300+
    CPC at GAKT - $0.50
    Ads Platform - Adsense
    Actual Average CPC - $2.80
    Average Monthly Income - $200
Number of Pages - 7 Posts
    Backlinks - 200+ (40+ Domains)
    EMD Google Position - #1
    EMD Bing Position - #1

Here?s a site that I built specifically to earn money. This is one of those ?evergreen? goldmines, so it wasn?t affected by the ?fresh update? back in November 2011. I wrote seven articles three years ago. I have since stopped updating and also ceased building backlinks. Because the target is such a low search keyword, competition has been relatively weak. The Penguin/Panda update didn?t touch this. The 200 dollar per month is due to its high CPC and +/- 20% CTR. The surprising thing here is that people who came from Bing click the ads more than Google users. I might update this soon.

    Adult Site #1

EMD exact worldwide at GAKT - 60,000+
    CPC at GAKT - $0.10
    Ads Platform ? Adult PPC
    Actual Average CPC - $0.05
    Average Monthly Income - $120
Number of Pages - 80+ Posts
    Backlinks ? 1400+ (200+ Domains)
    EMD Google Position - #1
    EMD Bing Position - #1

A ?not safe for work? site that I initially built to write my erotic stories but became something else together. I have tried various adult PPC over the years. Traffic from international viewers is high, but very low CPC. I stopped building backlinks and ceased updating these years ago. In recent months serp competition became high but my EMD was able to hold #1, at least for now. I might or might not update this depends on what my competition do next.

THE GOAL: Additional $30 per day

Right now, I am earning +/- $20 per day from three of my blogs. That?s $600 a month of stable core income for 4 years straight, from doing something I rather enjoy (or in some instances doing nothing). Some exceptional month though income jumps 5 times. Coming from a poor family, that?s a whole lot of money for a part-time job.

Over the years, I registered by hand seven exact match domains (or near exact because couples are with hyphens). These are topics I know really well. However, due to lack of time, I didn?t develop them (but I will now):

New Site #1: EMD. Info, 40K exact local US at GAKT, $1.6 CPC, high serp competition
New Site #2: EMD. Info, 8K exact local US at GAKT, $5.5 CPC, low serp competition
New Site #3: One hyphen adult .org, 135K exact worldwide at GAKT, $0.20 CPC, low serp competition
New Site #4: EMD .net, 4K exact local US at GAKT, $1.6 CPC, low serp competition
New Site #5: EMD .net, 30K exact local US at GAKT, $1.5 CPC, medium serp competition
New Site #6: EMD .net, 7K exact local US at GAKT, $2 CPC, medium serp competition
New Site #7: three hyphens .com, 30K exact local US at GAKT, $2.2 CPC, high serp competition

    The Questions

Question #1: How hard is it to rank a .info domain on a high SERP competition keyword?
Question #2: Backlinking, can it be done manually without outsourcing?
Question #3: How long till these new sites combined earn an additional $30 dollar per day?

The only way to find out the answer is by trying. It?s a big gamble of my time, but not of my money because I will answer my own questions by designing the blogs, writing the articles, and manually building the backlinks myself. When outsourcing, the real commodity is as much time as ability or as the old adage goes ?time is money.?

I will try to update this from time to time. Stay tuned. Thanks for reading.

Thanks brother. I will try to build the backlink myself.

Of course not. Read my post above, specifically Ads Platform - Adult PPC.

DAY 1: Setting Up the 7 Blogs

Custom Domain (30 minutes) - Blogger changed the way they linked with Godaddy. I pasted the domain in the one-click DNS form, and viola most of the DNS config are in. No longer will I have to change most of the DNS settings manually.

One problem though, the naked domain redirects to www don't work off the bat. I have to change a bunch of A-records ip address for it to work. When I finally got the redirect to work, I deleted all the ip address of A-records.

Blog Templates (two hours) - I used a single basic template but heavily customized it for the different topics. In the previous years, Blogger has changed a lot of their XHTML codes, so I discarded any xml and javascript that doesn't work anymore.

Logo (one hour) - this is the easiest process for me. I used Photoshop and Illustrator. I have a bunch of stock photos/illustration and more than a hundred of fonts to choose from. So far so good.

Analytics/Statistics (30 minutes) - since Google Webmaster is automatically tied to Blogger, I no longer have to manually input xml sitemap. I added Google Analytics/Statcounter for good measures though.

Took me 4 hours overall to finish setting up the 7 blogs. That's it for today. Tomorrow I will start writing the articles.

Day 2: Writing 3 Articles, Blog Maintenance (three hours overall)
I don't have much time, I'm tending to family matters. Anyways, I finished writing three articles (for three blogs). I?m not a reporter or have the time to sift through thick tomes, so my write-up is not first-hand experience. However, it is always helpful to have some knowledge on what I?m writing. That?s why I only start blogs on topics which I?m familiar with.

    On the Act of Writing

I have found this reference useful, and I still read them from time to time:

The Elements of Style by William Strunk, E. B. White - E.B. White is a fantastic essayist, and this very brief book is indispensable. If you have to read just one book on writing this is the one I recommend.

On Writing Well by William Zinsser - Another classic. One of the best ideas I learned from this book is that every writer is different.

Those two books above are what I reread the most. Other books I found useful are:
Writing Tools by Roy Peter Clark
    On Writing by Stephen King
The Book on Writing by Paula LaRocque
Line by Line by Claire Cook (How to edit)
Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott (For overcoming the writer?s block)
The Only Grammar Book You'll Ever Need by Susan Thurman
For seo copywriting, Brian Clark is a good starting point:
    copyblogger .com/copywriting-101

    Writing Software I Use

    Microsoft Word 2010
    Notepad++
WhiteSmoke 2011 ? this is a grammar checker.
Dupefree Pro ? Duplicate Checker, Useful for Editing
Treepad Enterprise ? To store my writing
    Thesaurus

    My Writing Process

I read three or four articles about a topic for 10-15 minutes. I use notepad++ as a scratch pad, typing random ideas. Afterwards, I write like hell in MS Word for 20 minutes without stopping. That?s my style though, some writers stop during writing to edit, but I don?t. Some writers use templates (outlines, bullet points, ordered list, etc.), I don?t. I just write as fast as I could before I lose interest. Another thing, some found music while writing to be helpful, I found it distracting.

After the raw article is finished, I edit what I?ve written and add the keyword I?m targeting. I feed what I?ve written on Whitesmoke, check for duplicate in Dupefree, and check in the thesaurus for similar keywords if Whitesmoke deemed it redundant. That?s it. I usually write 700 words article (or more if I?m in the mood). If I deemed what I wrote too long, I split it in two. I copy paste my finished writing in Blogger, adding some photos or videos in some case. I store my unique article in Treepad for future keyword reference.

My writing process usually takes 45 to 1 hour.

    Blog Maintenance (30 minutes)

Uploaded favicons, which is now easier to deploy for Blogger. I found out that the mobile version of Blogger is different, so I disabled it to show the desktop version instead. I?m pretty sure modern mobile phones can handle my blog. I erased a javascript code for ?read more,? post summary is now native for Blogger. It looks like Bing Webmaster Tools has new features. I decided to add my sites to Bing. In the godaddy DNS Manager the A-record ip adress is as follows for the www redirect in the blogger to work:

    Code:
    216.239.32.21
    216.239.34.21
    216.239.36.21
    216.239.38.21
That?s it for today. I willl write more articles tomorrow.

To all those who show support, thank you.

I don't have time. Maintaining 10 sites is already time-consuming.

    Day 3:
    Resting

I caught the common cold today and feeling sluggish. I decided to rest a bit. I will try to write again when I?m quite rested. The good news is looks like the family matters is close to being resolve, so I can finally allocate some of my free time on the sites.

Day 4: I finished writing one article for all the new sites. Backlink them all with do-follow 25 web 2.0 using diversified anchor links.

Google serp results after 24 Hours (Using Rank Tracker)

    New Site #1: N/A
    New Site #2: N/A
    New Site #3: Rank #27
    New Site #4: Rank #16
    New Site #5: Rank #11
    New Site #6: Rank #60
    New Site #7: N/A

As expected, the high competition keywords are not moving at all. I was expecting the low competition (.info) to at least reach the 100 threshold, but it looks like it needs more content and backlinks to move. If this three don't cross the top 100 next week, I might just drop them and concentrate on those which are performing.

    End of the Month Report

    Old Sites Report

Authority Site #1: $600+, Didn't update this for almost a month now but still got a minor bump from a minor trend.
Micro Niche Site #1: $200+, no updates, didn't move in rank or on average income.
Adult Site #1: $200+, I blocked some ads from showing, the CTR almost doubled.

Total Income for June (Old Sites): $1,000+

    Day 5: New Sites Report

Total articles I wrote: 2 for each blog
Total backlinks using iMacros: 25 web 2.0, 50 social bookmarks, 15 RSS feeds for the backlinks

New Sites Google serp results after 48 Hours (Using Rank Tracker)

    New Site #1: N/A
New Site #2: Rank #83 (Finally!)
    New Site #3: Rank #55 (-28)
    New Site #4: Rank #5 (+12)
    New Site #5: Rank #25 (-14)
    New Site #6: Rank #42 (+18)
    New Site #7: N/A

Ranking for a high competition keyword is frustrating. Or as they say back in the 90s, it's wack! I don't know if it has to do with:

    A. Weak domain names such as the .info for site #1 and the triple dash for site #7.
    B. If Google has minimum set-time for competitive keywords to show at Top 100.

One thing is for sure. I will not develop a blog on a topic that has a high serp competition again. I am tempted to discontinue these two sites.

Google is dancing all over the place. I expect this to stabilize in the upcoming weeks. Google Bot crawler visited all my sites (via Statcounter).

I might not be able to update this journal daily, but will do so every week.

    Till then. No Diggity.
