Well after being out of the IM game for a good 6 months it's time for me to get back in. My background in IM was ranking blogs and making money off Amazon and Adsense. I have never paid for advertising so this is a whole new learning experience for me. This journal is to help track my progress, keep me motivated, and hopefully get some helpful suggestions from you veterans.

I started by finding a product on clickbank, it has a good gravity, and pays $20 a sale.

I signed up for an account at Sitescout. I added my credit card and am awaiting approval on it. Will deposit $500 to begin with.

I found 2 sites that are very related to my product and added a 300X250 and a 728X90 banner to each site. Just have to wait for my CC to be approved then wait for these 2 campaigns to be approved.

I set a CPM bid of $1.00 and a total daily budget of $6. My plan for now is to spend about $200 a month for 2 months just to get a feel for this whole media buying. After my initial $500 is gone I'll see where I'm sitting and decide if this is for me or not. Any feedback/suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Wish me luck!

Hey man, good luck with your venture.. I have a suggestion though.. Since you're new to this you shouldn't use the 728x90 banner ad spot.. These are placed on spots that no one really pays attention to and IMO you need a little experience to play with these.. So it will just increase your impressions count with only a few clicks.. Stick to these ad spots for now if possible:

    • 250x250
    • 336x280
    • 300x250
    • 120x600
    • 160x600

Make sure the sites are legit traffic sources by comparing their stated display numbers with Alexa (ie: someone running 2000 displays an hour better have a pretty high Alexa rank).

I started advertising on a site their that was obviously padding their traffic, so I switched to another.

Thanks, I got to looking at the sites I was advertising and all those 728X90 banners are way at the very top and can be easily overlooked. I should of known better cause on my own websites I always placed my Adsense blocks right above or next to the main content, they always had the best CTR.

Well my CC and the 2 campaigns got approved today so I'll let them run for a couple days and see what happens.

Crappy start on my first day. I picked 2 sites where one had an average CPM of $0.40 and the other of $0.65. I set a bid of $1.00CPM and let it run for about 8 hours and 0 impressions. I upped the bid to $1.25 and still no impressions after 3 hours. Should I let it run longer or find some new sites to bid on? Since I am just starting out and testing the waters I don't want to pay anymore than $1CPM.

It may be the daily budget issue my friend. SS will make about $5 out of your budget as safe buffer to avoid overflowing.
That's to say, if you set daily budget to $10, at most they'll only cost you about $5.
    Try to high your budget.

This is gonna sound like a retarded question but when Sitescout lists a sites "Impressions" is that the number of impressions per month or day?

    Little update here:

So I been messing around with this for the past couple days and while no success is to be had, I am learning lots. So far this is where Im at

*31,000 impressions on 1 website spread across 5 different banners
    * Only 14 clicks giving me a crappy 0.04%CTR
    * My CPM is averaging $0.78
*Each of the 5 banners has gotten at least 5,000 impressions and the CTR on each of them is 0.04-0.05%
*Total spent so far is $25

Where would you guys go from here? Right now I paused the campaign. I am starting to think this site has bad traffic, tell me if this sounds fishy:

On Sitescout it lists the site having 5,000,000 impressions. It has a Alexa ranking of 15X,XXX. Quantcast lists the site as having 79X,XXX page views last month. I'm not sure how to properly read that data buy it doesn't seem right. What do you all think?

It's early here so I am bad at math. Can you tell me roughly how many impressions per hour you are getting on this site?

    The listed IMPS is DAILY.
I met the same issue too, my answer is, test yourself :) Alexa & Quantcast are not accurate too.

0.0x% is normal when your banners are not optimized. Industry average is 0.3%

Well more crappy news today. Apparently with Sitescout you can bid on one domain but it will show your banners on other websites than the one you want. I was bidding on a website that was very well matched for my CB product and was getting lots of impressions but come to find out all my banners were being placed on a shitty news site. Once I blacklisted that domain my impressions dropped. It's been 24 hours and I havn't got a single impression on just the site I want, I even upped my CPM to $2.00 just to see what happens and nothing.

I think now I'm gonna drop the whole Clickbank thing. Everything I've read says to start with CPA as it converts better. Also I don't know why I was even promoting CB, to me they all look like shit and I would never spend my money on any CB product. If I wouldn't spend my money on it why would other people. So now the plan is to find a CPA offer that I would actually buy and go from there.

Don`t promote CPA offers like email submit you will never get your money back so if you wanna promot CPA you need to find As seen on TV product that pays over $15.
And you need high conversion banners and all different designs

Yup that's what I did. I found a TV product on Peerfly that is converting really well there. I also found some good sites on Sitescout with low CPM so I'm gonna give that a whirl.

    UPDATE

So I signed up for the 7 day trial to What Runs Where and got a good look and what people use for banners and where they advertise. I found a niche and studied all the top banners that people have been using for over 60 days and created a couple of my own with elements in common of the top banners. I placed the banners on some sites and here are my stats.

    Total Impressions: 130,245
    Win CPM: $0.43
    Clicks: 270
    CTR: 0.21%
    Spent: $56.26

I started with 5 banners, 3 of which sucks, and 2 that did ok getting 0.24% CTR. I sent all these clicks to a CB offer

    Hop Count: 281
Hops Per Order Form Impression: 94
    Order Form Impression: 3
    Sales Count: 0

So I am thinking that the product/sales page sucks, I figured I'd get at least 1 sale out of all those hops. I found another CB product in the same niche and am going to use the exact same camping and send some clicks to that offer and see what happens.

Any questions or suggestion feel free to ask.
