Joomla, Wordpress or anything else :confused:

I'm building my first website. I know little of HTML, PHP and CSS, however, I'm not thinking about building a website from sratch. I will use templates to start with. My question is which is the best platform to use: Joomla or wordpress? is there a better alternative than these too? Please elaborate in you ansewrs.

Wordpress, definitely. There are a lot of tutorials on how to get started on Youtube just google it.
There are also a bunch of templates available.
Just do a Wordpress template search in the download section on BHW
You will find some sharp looking unique ones.

i havent used wordpress before so i cant compare although i can say is Joomla is very flexible, depends what you needs are.

If you are after a straight forward blog type website then i believe wordpress would be better for you.

If you want to start adding ecommerce, membership functionality, video, etc, etc to your site then i would opt for Joomla and take a look at the 4000+ extensions they have for it.

Joomla IMHO does have a steep learning curve but once you figure out the very few limitations it has and how to code your own templates and possibly your own components the world is your oyster, mix it with some of the info on BHW and you can soon be deploying sites left right and center and earning yourself some good $$$

Hey.. chill out.. I don't see a high reputation for your account either so flaming other people isn't quite a great way to start on this forum, got it?

As for Wordpress.. It's amazingly easy to use and install and it's my favorite blogging system.

Joomla however is kind of confusing at first with quite a learning curve to step yourself ahead of.

If your new to HTML, I would stick to Wordpress for now while you learn Joomla or learn something a little more ahead of your knowledge level.

Thanks to all.

I already have a good collection of wordpress and Joomla templates; and I'm half way in my joomla site. I just want to make sure that joomla is the right choice. I also read that wordpress can be "integrated" into joomla for better seo, but don't know how to do it.

i believe wordpress has its own SEO plugins - but you can really go to town with Joomla and SEO, there are a number of plugins you can use, and the way you structure your site also helps, really depends on which version you are using... so far ive had far more success with SEO for j1.0 than J1.5 but J1.0 is no longer being supported after the summer of 2009 so am testing out a lot of different things with J1.5

however dont let that put you off i still get good SEO results with J1.5 i just dont like the current components that you need to use to get those results!

Cool. So you r using it. There are a lot of compenents for J1.5. Which component do u use and recommend?

i have a ton of components that i have used over the past few years - it really depends on your requirements... do you need galleries, membership, ecommerce, directories, document control, google maps, etc, etc

expand on your websites needs and i will be more than happy to help you

I've used Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal (the last one you might not work with

), and for newbies I'd think Wordpress is the better option. It's easier to learn, and everything you need is just easier to find & install. With Joomla, however, you can be a lot more flexible according to your needs, and from personal experience, my Joomla site usually ranks higher than my WP ones (though Joomla doesn't come SEO-optimized out of the box, you'll have to use 3rd party component for that purpose)

I'm playing with Joomla at the moment. I found it very straight forward to install (not as easy as wp) but is still doable. The only side of joomla I'm missing is my custom codings. But hopefully available extensions will help a bit at least for now. right now I'm playing with VirtueMart extension. But I wonder if it can be used with ebay associates.
