Matt Cutt replied as ?I can confirm that this violates our guidelines"

which makes me think what did they do to cause Google drop them?? It's another case now besides the BMW one, that google started to be merciless now with any one who game their result..

your insight? how did they game it??

    you

It said in the articles that they paid for a massive amount of links and most of them weren't related to their niche.

This is clearly an attempt to just scare off others... there's no way that G can actually monitor every single site like they did for JCP and manually review it.

So, I've always believed that you cannot be penalized for anything but on-page SEO... does this mean that you CAN and WILL be penalized for excessive link building???

How would the NYT be able to find out the source of the links?

This story just doesn't "smell" right to me for some reason. Sounds like someone has it "in" for JC Penney.

That is what reporters do. They get a tip from enemies of JCP , and the news paper then follows up. A lot of people lost a lot of money from JCP out ranking them. It is pretty easy to reverse engineer any link building done by anyone else when a human is manually going through everything and can look for certain footprints or patterns.

What does this tell us? If you can see your competitors are building OBVIOUSLY crappy bot spam links, report them to google. But be aware that there may be consequences.

This just proves how weak the Google algo is and how any site can be penalized quite easily if your competitors set you up and report you.

I told Mr. Penney not to use blackhat tactics from the warrior.....

If only Mr. Penney were in BHW none of this would happened in the first place...silly Mr. Penney...

New York Times - nuff said!

Those guys are a bunch of biased left-wing hacks who run all their political stories just like that. They lost all credibility years ago - remember this is the same outfit who covered up the Commie atrocities in the USSR a long time ago.

To be fair guys JC Penny's SEO's used TNX and a whole heap of crap sites for links....that's pretty dumb ass if you ask me. There are better ways to safely build links to high profile sites without risking this sort of direct linking from crap unrelated sites tactic. It was lazy and the SEO's involved must be dumb assess...who knows how they managed to land such a high profile site as a customer.

SEO contracts aren't gained through results, they are gained through selling an idea.
