Came across this. It looks like even the biggest retailers
    are turning to blackhat.

I know I wish I had them as an offline client.

    LOL
Well done SEO though, nice job on building backbone websites with unique IP's etc.. JC Penny must have paid them thousands to do this :)

Yea, nice results indeed... and Google didn't even pick it up (which means there isn't a chance they are going to find me!)... looks like a competitor called the NY Times with the story and let them run with it.

Well this has certainly supplied me with plenty of articles to show my clients of
what unscrupulous SEO's can do to their business.

ROTFLMAO... OK, this is absolutely hilarious even if it's not surprising. I mean really, how many people voluntarily link to JC Penny? It just doesn't come up in comments although, now that it's been exposed I imagine there would have been a nice bump to their SERP's if not for them being in the dog house.

I love this article and see it like manna from heaven to the BH SEO community and myself as well, obviously.

There really is no other way to rank now. You almost have to use bh if you want to rank within the first page for any term. Especially competitive ones. There is no such thing as "whitehat" anymore, unless you've got lots of buddies with high PR sites willing to put your link on their site for free. You may even have to pay them to do it- which G doesn't like either. :p

LOL.. i applaud JCPenny for doing proper SEO. but seriously ALL seo is considering "black hat" by google.Blackhat is defined as any act to artificially influence ranking.Article marketing, blog coments, reciprocal links. So Whitehat SEO is basically waiting(and hoping that other sites link to you).

So what happens? Google devaules JCPenny and somone else takes the spot who is doing the exact sae thing

Kind of ironic, the article says JCPenny denied using such tactis(as they should), then it says they fired their SEO firm(they did the job and got the rankings), the NYTimes article then gives a ******** link to the firm.

Funny. I did notice that JC Penney does come up a lot for my personal G00gle searches.
Props to both JCP and the seo "expert" who outed them and made a name for himself....and for showcasing what seo can do.

This only serves to show that Google need to fuckin redesign their search engine.

Even the biggest of big white hat authority sites want to game the search engines.

Backlink is a dumb SE algo model, it cannot be policed.

Yeh! bomb them into $17.8 billion in total revenue in 2010.

You mean they want more by suing the NYT?
    Blackhat is not illegal.
Google chose with their own algorithms to rank them.

With $17.8 billion you get new (or renamed) SEO's to beat the new algorithm.
