I've never seen Star Wars or Star Trek. What should I start with and why?

Sartre

Ignored a dispute resolution thread against them.

Yeah I know... I was busy with life, had a crazy childhood, then doing my PhD, traveling a lot. Now I have time to chill and watch tv shows/films.

Or maybe there is something else that you would recommend?

They are pretty different.
I would say that Star Trek is more sophisticated, philosophical show. It shows better, more moral human behaviour, how as humans we should live to be better people. I very liked it, because it doesnt forcefully shove their values/agenda to you as some modern shows do. The characters there are not "today's" people, they are with better morals and etc. We could say that this show shows what as humans we should achieve, to be better people. Of course I am talking about older Star Trek, not Discovery, Picard and other recent shows. They are made by totally different creators and these shows doesn't have that "Star Trek'ism". These shows show todays people in the future, not moral and using unessessary force and etc.

Star Wars has morals too, as every movie has some morals. But Star Wars is more Good vs. Evil kinda thing, while star trek is more broader in it's morals. But this doesnt make Star Wars bad. Great movies, and also, older, original movies, didnt like new movies.

If you interested in these kinda shows , you can also check Babylon 5. Very great show, I wasn't expecting it to be that good. Very good show, really worth watching.

Also The Orville, it's a new show. It's like a Star Trek but with humor. Again, wasn't expecting that this show will be such a gem. I watched trailer and it didnt impress me, but when I watched the show, I saw that it's superb show. Much better than modern Star Treks.

thanks a lot for your detailed answer :))

I've seen 2 episodes of Picard on Amazon Prime when my kid was born and it felt very... boring. And I am into dramas and slow movies. It just felt basic.

thanks for the recommendations i will check the trailers.

Start with Star Wars 4,5,6. Then 1,2,3. They were released backwards because he thought they’d have better technology for 1,2,3. Or chronological works too. Don’t bother with the new stuff.

Whichever way you begin to watch Star Wars, please remember that the last three are not canon and Rey isn’t a skywalker.

alright. not sure i care about the canon if I don't know if the stuff is good yet. I've seen a glimpse of The Mandalorian when my wife was watching it on Netflix or something but I don't know the universe in general so was meh.

All i know is "Luke, I am your father". Or something.

Ditch 2 of the most highly rated and culturally significant entertainment franchises of all time? For Dune?

Would love to hear the argument for this.
George Lucas copied lots of elements from Frank Herbert's Dune, Dune is the original story, Star Wars is inspired on Dune not to say a total ripoff

How does any of that make it worth skipping the more culturally significant and objectively better films?

Not sure if this will be popular but star wars can go in the bin compared to any star trek. I would start with next gen, then ds9, then enterprise and leave voyager for last which is arguably (another unpopular opinion) better than next gen. Don't bother with the movies, they are all shit!

Oh and always remember the rules of acquisition ;)
