    Hi

    I have a .com site for $ and .com Google Search engine

    I have cloned this site on to my .co.uk domain and I am going to make it local

    The thing is though do I have to have two seperate blogs?

    Because I do not want duplicate content

    Don't do it. Decide for .com or .co.uk, but not both.

    You gotta have separate content on blogs man. Otherwise it's blatant duplication.

    Having two domains with the same content will even make your sites compete against themselves.

    Can't he redirect people with UK IPs to the .co.uk and the rest to .com?

    I mean, I guess it matters for indexation, because he want to make it local I assume he wants the .co.uk to be indexed. I don't know how that would work, hmm, isn't it possible to have the .co.uk on google for UK IPs and the .com for the rest?

    Way out of my league here...

    Yes if you're going to host it on different servers each with their own database. However, what you must do is to add rel="alternate" hreflang="x" on both domains to differentiate the language and google's datacenter.

    These are the attributes you should add on both .com and .co.uk sites to help Google differentiate between two domains but with the same/identical content with a little variations in menus.

    Code:
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="http://www.yoursite.com/" />

    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-GB" href="http:/www.yoursite.co.uk/" />

    Big No for duplicate content or domains one domain will be De-indexed as a penalty, I know it because it has happened to one of my websites which had duplicate content.

    I'm working on a project that will target UK but I'd also like to add Aus and US support later, I knew about rel="canonical" but not ="alternate" (goes to show I should do more research on tags/attributes I'm unfamiliar with haha) had a read through this page and it will help me so much clarifying the reason for 3 versions of each page, thank-you man!
