    Hi

I just installed a wordpress to one of my new domain and i updated it to wordpress 3.0 and then i found a link at the bottom which says "wordpress blog hosting" and it takes to hostgator page with a code "wordpress"

i am using a shared hosting and this is a plugin provided by them and it comes pre activated.

It looks like they are putting small ads in shared accounts.

any way we can deactivate the plugin or edit the code with our own affiliate link

Looks like they branded the default installation of wordpress with a little link back to their page. Remove the plugin and choose a new theme.
Or do the wp install yourself...

What is so bad? I dont think you people should blame HG for this. It is very simple. When you install Wordpress via Fantastico, they activate a plugin by default that puts a link in the footer. You can deactivate it. Very simple.

    Why so much disscusion?

Disable the "hosted by Hostgator" plugin.

Interesting... it would be smarter for Wordpress to set it up as an Affiliate link. Thanks for pointing this out. I will have to keep an eye on this.

Have you notice the Search Engine Optimization Tools (option) guys? When I log in to my business hosting I quickly notice it and very skeptical about it.

Ha! Just like Portugal will beat Spain today for WorldCup :D

    @anhbloginc

Believe me. This has nothing to do with other plugins. It is just a little plugin from HG. Wich is fine for me.

I upgraded it from my installed wp which was a 2.9.7 or something and it had a strip saying upgrade to wp 3.

and this is a plugin and it can be deactivated form plugin menu.

One more thing is we can edit the .php file and insert our own affiliate link

yeah, I think it's a bit shady but it's smart on their part because most people won't notice and it's easy to disable for those who do.

As with a fair amount of the free stuff available for your blogs/sites (themes, plugins, add-ons, etc.) that have links included.

And even more sneaky...pre-filled adsense-code or affiliate links.
