Famous torrenting site "IsoHunt" has revealed that it's closing and putting 10.5 years of file transferring to bed.

IsoHunt is one of the most-established torrenting sites on the web, but a continual wrangling with the MPAA has meant that its owners have no choice but to shut down within the next seven days.

IsoHunt joins a long line of torrent sites that have disappeared of late because of legal issues.

As site owner Gary Fung explained back in January on IsoHunt's 10-year anniversary, the likes of Kazaa, Suprnova and LokiTorrent all disappeared because of "copyright cartels". He believed, though, that sites such as IsoHunt had to exist to enable sharing on the web.

"In this age of 'broadcasting yourself', we are often both creators as well as consumers," said Fung.

"And in my ideal world, consumers will share what they want, freely, and creators will be promoted accordingly and compensated fairly. Minimal friction, and minimal middlemen in the way who doesn't help in connecting consumers directly with creators."

Alongside closing IsoHunt, Fung must also pay $110 million in damages to the MPAA, according to Wired.

At least with the shutdown the MPAA (will not get paid) but the reality is that the $110 million fines/damages are set so high simply to force closure...

So were isohunt just a torrent tracker?
sad day really, such a difficult subject because obviously material producers don't want torrents to be available, but it is the nature of the Internet for everything to be shared, and the torrent model is very good.

heard the other day that the producers of breaking bad are advocates of torrent sharing as they say it helped to bring publicity to their show.

It has legitimate and illegitimate uses. Download the latest linux distro? Head there. It has the latest and best torrents. Download a movie, head there. Ultimately I think it's shameful a site can be shut down for telling people WHERE they can find stuff. By that logic Google should be shutting down as well.

Well, I live in Canada and always wanted to start a torrent site. If I put my hosting in a foreign country like Romania or something would I get away with it? I have it pictured in my head how it would work and look just have been to lazy to do it. It would probably be an expensive start up but that is fine. Now that ISOHunt shit the bed I might look into it

Technically, torrents are just meta-information about how to get files as well ( checksum hashes of files and links to trackers who have information who has them).

It's the same thing. The torrent isn't the actual file. IT just tells your computer where to get the files.

So like I originally said, both Google and Isohunt just tell people where they can get the files.
