Is writing enough? How can I turn writing into a job?

alright, that's a lot to ask for. more than anything I'm just looking for ideas.

I joined textbroker a while ago and now I'm a 4-star writer. it's alright, but there isn't a lot of good work to do there. I hear it's because summers are slow.

but someone on the TB forums pointed me to a book called "The Well-Fed Writer" and it looks interesting. before I throw any money into an ebook (can't find it for 'free' lol) I was wondering how deep I could get myself into writing. I would ditch whatever I'm doing now if writing was good enough.

I saw someone here on BHW say that TB pays like $5 for work worth $50. if I can get $50 for my little 4-star 400 word articles then I'm all for trying it out. I looked at C-C but they seem to be ridiculously strict and there's no guarantee my articles will be sold

    what are your thoughts?

You could write articles on fiverr or odesk and make $4 per 400 words because their sites with very low costs.

On elance you can charge a lot more but it takes time to built reputation and build good feedback.

But I've never heard of anyone paying $50 for 400 words.

I prolly should have clarified that I thought that was a pretty good exaggeration too, but it's one example at least. I'll see if Fiverr has more work available, thanks

In most first world countries, we have journalists that write for newspapers and make this, or much more. This goes for professional magazine articles and such.

OP, you need to ask this on a journalist forum. The only writing jobs people on here are familiar with are SEO content generation jobs, and that doesn't pay too much generally.

The Well Fed Writer is about commercial copywriting. Are you interested in copywriting? Take a look at Trada. You can write ad copy for PPC. Think adwords, facebook, bing, etc... if you can learn how to write copy that converts, you can make a nice chunk of money. Much better than writing long sales letters. Oh, email copywriting is pretty lucrative too.

Can't post links yet so google trada writers and you'll find some info.

I've never done any copywriting work, but I'm interested enough to look it up and give it a try. Thanks for the info. I wonder how hard it really is; it looks really professional. I'm not used to doing work on that level.

How about writing something that gives you recurring income, like a kindle ebook or a website? Assuming your writing is actually good.

I can't think of anything I'd wanna write a book about. I've heard of people building multiple adsense websites, but I wouldn't know where to start

I realized today that TB is badly affected by Summer. I have another job online and it's pretty similar. There are plenty of open orders on TB right now, but they have bad instructions and nobody is really completing them.

I wish I could get something steady right now even for somewhat low pay. It's making me depressed to just sit here doing nothing

This is solid advice, Kindle ebooks are literally exploding right now. Just put something out there in your downtime, the success rate for people that put in just a little effort is incredible.

It sounds good, but I have no idea what to write about. I've read some information about writing erotica but that's it. I might give it a shot. It's not like I have anything to lose anyway.

It's about finding people who are willing to pay you that much. The going rate for articles is $5-10 per 500 words these days. If you can write quality stuff, build a reputation, find good clients and charge them more. Another option is if you have consistent work and clients who make big orders, hire employees under you and make a team. You can earn significantly doing this if you take the right approach.

Make yourself a website with some samples and details. This will make you look professional and you can charge a bit more than your regular.

Third option is the long term. Pick a niche, learn to keyword research. Write content and setup a website. Learn to SEO or invest some money. Once you site grows, you can monetize. Also, like few people suggested, you can try kindle.

The going rate for poor quality content is $5-10 per 500, but high quality content is worth $15-20 per 500 at least.

OP, if you keep competing with the $5 writers then you'll just end up burning yourself out. If you're a good writer and charging $5 then chances are people are reselling your content for a higher price.

What happened on CC? You say they were too strict, did they reject your articles? If so, why?

It seemed like they were looking for people with degrees or equivalent skill, so I just went to TB instead. I might try submitting an article there to see if I'm good enough, but seems kind of weird to submit content just to hope someone else buys it sometime. I suppose it works for some people, and it would be nice to get paid $20 for a 500 word article instead of $7

Some people on TB told me they moved into other work and get paid $30/h. that sounds pretty amazing to me, but I have no idea where to go for that sort of pay. I just have to learn; it's not like I'll get there instantly anyway

    Denimfrank,
Are you native writer or English your second language. If you are Native you can try searching "high paying paid blogging list" "100$ for article" like this you will get many leads...

I am not sure if there is a lot of work for writers ATM, because I use the site as a buyer so I can't see the writer's interface, but you might want to take a look at Hirewriters.

Other way is creating your service website and doing SEO for that for targeted keywords and you would get clients from search engine.. it is a little time consuming process but you would get long time result.

Thanks guys. I just made a post on the "Making Money" forum related to this exact thing. I guess I should have come here first. I am thinking about going the kindle route. I have been thinking about writing a book for some time. Anyone have any recommended resources relating to writing a kindle e-book?
