Is using a Proxy enough to disguise origin server or should you use VPN as well?

Edit: I've noticed in browsing I am seeing a lot of recaptchas and websites that won't load when I'm on my VPN. This is a popular VPN, so am I being shown recaptchas/blocks because the ip is blacklisted from too many people using it or is it only because I'm using a VPN at all?

Captcha's are presented based on the whole subnet not just a single IP. It is likely that lots of other users are also searching at the same time which triggers captchas. If you're only browsing then a http/https proxy is fine to hide your originating IP address. If you're using other applications that can support proxies then a SOCKS proxy should be able to cover many different protocols. If you're app doesn't allow for the use of a proxy then you'd have to use a VPN to remain anonymous.

Change the VPN provider for a week and see if you get the same behavior. Or use proxyfier to divert your traffic through proxies.

Most VPN providers have a money back policy, so if you sign up for a new VPN and at the end of week one you see the same behavior, than you can ask a refund.
